RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Particle shape and particle-size distribution (PSD) are important factors for pigment packing and water retention in the pigment coating process, being closely associated with many runnability problems. Diverse experimental investigations on the packing and dewatering of pigment slurries have been made. However, theoretical approaches remain lacking. This paper presents a joint experimental and theoretical analysis of the influence of pigment shape and PSD on pigment packing and dewatering. The relative viscosities of very dilute pigment slurries were measured and used to determine the intrinsic viscosity, based on the Einstein equation. The deviation of pigment shape from spherical caused an increase in viscosity of the slurries. Acicular precipitated calcium carbonates gave lower shape factor values than platy clay particles, which indicated that the needle-like particles could rotate more easily around their long axes under shearing conditions. The packing of pigments, which determines porosity, permeability, light scattering, and mechanical properties, was examined. The packing volumes of nonspherical pigments were estimated based on their respective PSDs, using an algorithm developed for spherical particles, modified with a correction factor. This model is based on the close random-packing volume fraction (∅2p) of particles of uniform size being an independent variable, regardless of their shape. Therefore, it was valid as long as the particles always achieve the same close random-packing volume (∅1p) by sedimentation or tapping. Overall, the effect of the particle shape and PSD on the dewatering and filter-cake permeability (Kf) was analyzed. The dewatering rates were measured with a common pressure filtration method, and the permeability of the filter cakes was obtained by fitting the data to a filtration equation. The particle size and PSD were found to influence the permeability constant, but there was little correlation between the permeability and particle shape. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The objective of this work is to develop and evaluate experimental approaches with different analytical techniques to measure the permeability, diffusivity, and solubility of water in model coatings. These properties are of primary relevance in studies of coatings for corrosion protection. For water permeation measurements, setups were designed and prepared to facilitate measurements by microcalorimetry, gravimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. For sorption measurements, films were prepared in various thicknesses to allow a proper analysis with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in transmission mode and gravimetry. Both methods are successful in following water uptake kinetic curves, being complementary in film thickness ranges that can be analyzed. The validity of the permeabilities calculated from permeation measurements is compared to results from group contribution methods and reported values in the literature. Diffusivities were determined using data from the transient region in sorption and permeation measurements, as well as from the steady-state permeation rate and equilibrium solubility in permeation and sorption measurements, respectively. TopographieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Periodic wavy patterns emerge and align in a transverse direction once a viscous fluid is coated onto a surface moving above a critical speed. In this study, we examine how this flow instability, which is usually referred to as ribbing, is triggered or damped on a moving topographic surface. To examine the transient flow behavior, the liquid first came into contact with a smooth surface, followed by a downstream surface with small-scale V-shaped grooves. Flow visualizations revealed a topography-induced flow stabilization and a matching of rib frequencies with the underlying groove patterns, depending on the groove geometry and capillary number. Spectroscopie de photoélectronsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the present work, the surface behavior of cotton fabrics coated with a series of bio-based polybenzoxazines is explored. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of bio-based benzoxazine monomers (C-x) using cardanol (C) and seven different amines (x = ba, ha, dda, oda, ddm, jef, and fa). The molecular structures of the benzoxazine monomers have been confirmed using FTIR and NMR analyses. The microstructure of the polybenzoxazine-coated cotton fabrics observed from FE-SEM reveals that formation of rough nanostructure is influenced by molecular structure of monomers. Further, surface analysis shows that poly(C-dda)-coated cotton fabric offers superior water contact angle (WCA = 155° ± 3) with low sliding angle (6°). Also, poly(C-dda)-coated cotton fabric delivers the lowest surface energy (14.1 mN/m) and high resistance against acidic and alkaline media. Subsequently, oil–water separation investigation shows that the poly(C-dda)-coated cotton fabric yields 99% of separation efficiency with flux value of 7200 L/m2h. Thus, the cardanol-based polybenzoxazine-coated cotton fabrics prepared in the present work can find application in the field of oil–water separation due to their superior water-repellent nature.

The objective of this work was to compare five different resin types (epoxy, acrylic, alkyd, silicone, and silicone–epoxy hybrid) in an intumescent formulation and to study the influence of resin concentration on the fire protection performance of the coating. Results from TGA and MCC analysis of resins and coatings indicated that coatings containing silicone are thermally stable and release smaller amounts of heat. In the fire resistance test, samples containing epoxy and silicone resins had lower temperatures (130–160°C) compared to the other samples. It has also been found that it is possible to decrease resin concentration in formulations containing epoxy and silicone resins up to 25.6% and to maintain or even improve their fire protection capability. SiliciumIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Impaction techniques have so far been efficiently used for formation of films from nanoparticles when coupled to synthetic process. However, this approach limits the choice of shapes and compositions of particles, so techniques of impaction of ready-made particles are desirable. To this end, the use of nanoparticle inks as a source of solid material is first described in this paper. The films are cast from dispersions of polar solvent-susceptible Si/SiOx nanoparticles. Water, ethanol, and acetonitrile are studied for solvents, and the latter two are shown to be suitable, as they possess lower surface tension and lower boiling points. Microscopically uniform films of nanoparticles are formed when aerosol and substrate are heated, with density of films approaching 40% of that of the bulk material. Higher stagnation pressure is beneficial for deposition, while further heating of the aerosol beyond the solvent evaporation can cause oligomerization of the solvent. Deposition of dense films in subsonic part of the jet appears possible with the technique.

Polymérisation sous plasmaIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface properties of SiO2-like films deposited from plasma polymerization of HMDSO + O2 mixture have been investigated. Plasma of the gas mixture was produced using repetitive high voltage pulses at − 3 kV with varied frequency from 100 to 500 Hz. The films were characterized by means of atomic force spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, contact angle measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The film thickness increased linearly with the pulse frequency in the range of 100–400 Hz where the system was in energy-deficient domain. A further increase in the pulse frequency led to the monomer-deficient domain and the linear dependence of the deposition rate terminated. Refractive index of the films were similar to that of SiO2. Refractive index and extinction coefficient values suggested that the films had high density which is related to high fraction of suboxide structure. The total surface energy of the films was not significantly different when varied pulse frequency was used. The surface energy contained high polar component indicating that the polar Si–O groups were dominant in the structure. Note de contenu : - Atomic force microscopy

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Corrosion-resistant superhydrophobic surfaces were successfully fabricated on galvanized steel through a wet oxidation treatment and stearic acid modification. In this work, the formation mechanism of superhydrophobic surfaces and structures were characterized with contact angle meter, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The surface properties of superhydrophobic and non-superhydrophobic surfaces were assessed by calculating surface free energy (γ) and work of adhesion (Wst). Moreover, the corrosion behavior and durability of superhydrophobic surfaces were examined in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for up to 14 days. Superhydrophobic galvanized surfaces with WCAs of 168° (γ = 0.01 mN/m and 1.57 mN/m) and 162° (γ = 0.04 mN/m and Wst = 3.52 mN/m) were successfully obtained by modifying HCl etched surfaces with ethanolic stearic acid, with or without wet oxidation. According to the results, a zinc stearate layer on the surfaces effectively enhanced their corrosion resistance by numerous air pockets on the surfaces with hierarchical micro-/nanostructures that inhibited penetration by the NaCl solution. Moreover, superhydrophobic as-synthesized ZnO surface by wet oxidation had better corrosion durability than a superhydrophobic etched surface because of the strong physical and chemical bonding of stearic acid onto the as-synthesized ZnO nanorods. The water contact angles (WCAs) on the composite coatings were measured via contact angle measuring device. The antiwear performance was characterized via ball-on-disk sliding tribo-tests. Experimental results show that the addition of ceria with a content of 5 wt% is the most effective to enhance hydrophobicity of the coatings, resulting from the coating surface structure, roughness, and intrinsic hydrophobicity of ceria. Moreover, the addition of ceria is helpful to the improvement of antiwear performances of PTFE composite coatings, when the content of ceria is 1-7 wt%. Ceria/PTFE composite coatings with a ceria content of 5 wt% show a wear rate of 0.388 x 9 10-4 mm3/Nm, which is 80.6% lower than that of PTFE coating without ceria (2.000 x 10-4/Nm) Note de contenu : - Contact angle and coating surface topography

In this study, the synergistic potentials of cerium dioxide nanoparticles (NPs) were exploited to improve the abrasive, structural, and surface properties of polyurethane (PU)/silica nanocomposite coatings applied on the thermally modified spruce wood. Microhardness, adhesion strength, contact angle, and UV–Vis spectroscopy were used to evaluate the nanocomposite coatings’ surface properties. FE-SEM and EDS techniques were also employed to scrutinize distribution of NPs in the structure of nanocomposite coatings. The results showed that the abrasion resistance significantly improves by increasing the content of silica NPs. However, microhardness and performance of nanocomposite coatings containing a high percentage of silica diminished due to the aggregation of NPs and poor crosslinking of the polymer matrix. The presence of cerium dioxide NPs as a synergistic function in the PU coatings containing nano-silica enhanced the abrasion resistance as well as the glass transition temperature and caused enhanced hardness. Incorporation of cerium dioxide NPs exhibited an incremental effect on the adhesion strength of nanocomposite coatings. However, its presence in high concentration caused an adverse impact on the transparency of the nanocomposite films. In addition, wettability of PU/silica composites remained constant after incorporating high levels of cerium oxide NPs. These findings suggest that use of Ce–Si NPs hybrid/blend in the structure of PU coatings can assure the durability of wood coatings for esthetic applications and interior decoration by strengthening the surface, mechanical, and optical properties. Each macromer was then copolymerized with 2-hydroxylethyl acrylate (2-HEA) and toluene diisocyanate to produce the UV curable resins labeled as UA-IPA, UA-TPA, UA-PA, and UA-AA, respectively. The glass transition temperature (Tg), pendulum hardness, and adhesion properties of the cured films were studied. In general, all the resins produced coatings with high gloss and good adhesion. When accelerated weathering tests were carried out, films of UA-TPA could withstand UVA exposure up to 1500 h. When subjected to methyl ethyl ketone double rub test, cured films of UA-IPA and UA-TPA could withstand the highest double rubs at 90 times, followed by UA-PA and UA-AA at 45 and 15 times, respectively. Under salt spray corrosion test for 720 h, cured films showed good corrosion resistance with no observable blistering, except for UA-AA that showed slight blistering. Excellent water resistance was achieved by all cured films with good adhesion and minimal gloss reduction.
(Wikipedia)

The structure of PVA-Pcs and their intermediates are determined by a combination of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopies. On the other hand, the effect of Pc-Al loading by mole (PVA-N3:Pc-Al = 10:1 and 10:2) on the wettability, thermal and antibacterial properties of achieved final products is investigated, utilizing water contact angle (WCA) measurements, thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses, and antibacterial activity tests, respectively. Based on the WCA, TGA, and DSC analyses of PVA-Pcs, it is found that utilizing a higher loading of Pc-Al in the CuAAC reaction medium enhances the WCA and thermal properties of resulted products. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity tests against both Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium) and Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes) revealed the higher inhibition effect of PVA-Pcs compared to neat PVA, some prevalent antibiotics and control samples. Thus, PVA-Pcs are promising materials that can be used in different application areas requiring lower wettability and higher thermal and antibacterial properties. Note de contenu : - Materials

Prévision, Théorie de laIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper focuses on the prediction of the coating amount before the construction of ship painting, i.e., the calculation of coating consumption quota. At present, each shipyard uses a larger coating loss coefficient to calculate the coating consumption quota ; after the construction, there is often a lot of inventory left, which is not conducive to the scientific management of the ship coating process and the cost control of shipbuilding. Therefore, this paper proposes a coating consumption prediction method based on ensemble learning, using cosine similarity and gradient boosting regression tree hybrid algorithm (CS-GBRT) to calculate the coating loss coefficient under different working conditions. Cosine similarity is used to select similar data with less difference from the target to be predicted as the training set, and the loss function in GBRT is improved based on similarity weight to improve the prediction performance and calculation accuracy of GBRT. The coating data recorded by a shipyard from 2014 to 2019 are randomly selected to evaluate the prediction ability of the model established in the paper. The results show that when the proposed CS-GBRT algorithm is used to calculate the coating loss coefficient, the mean absolute error of training set and test set are both < 1.4, and the mean absolute error percentages are both < 4%. Compared with other research methods, the prediction accuracy is obviously improved, and the output feature importance is also consistent with the trend calculated by Spearman method, which proves the validity of the model again. Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This research assessed how type, particle size, and concentration of pigment in coating formulations influenced water and water vapor barriers of paperboard packaging. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and kaolin of micro- and nanosize of 1 and 0.05 µm, respectively, were added to 3% (w/v) gelatinized cassava starch to prepare coating formulations with different pigment concentrations of 5, 15, and 25% (w/v). These were applied on paperboard surfaces using the rod coating technique. Results showed that water resistance of paperboard, evaluated by contact angle (CA) and water absorptiveness (Cobb) were strongly influenced by pigment type (chemistry), particle size and shape, and pigment concentration (coating layer thickness). A hydrophobic surface (CA > 100) was obtained only for the nano-CaCO3 formulation with 25% (w/v) by combined effects of the nanosize scale, the spherical shape, and the hydrophobic surface of CaCO3 particulates. Kaolin nanoparticle coatings produced hydrophilic surfaces (CA ~ 90) with high water absorptiveness, while high concentrations of kaolin microparticle coating slightly improved water and water vapor barriers by compact arrangement of flattened particles. Mechanical strength properties of the paperboard were not significantly affected by coatings, but surface cracking was observed for large particle size or at high pigment concentration due to the increase in pigment/starch ratio. Coating films were prepared by a typical method using 0.254 mm applicator. The results of antibacterial activity measurements indicated that the films exhibited strong activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Values of the antibacterial activity (n = 3) were 5.7 and 4.9, respectively. As for the mixture of five kinds of fungi, after cultivation (n = 5), no colony growth on the film surface was observed by microscopy. From the appearance of the film surfaces, it was revealed that the silver–cytokinin complex filler for emulsion paints possessed better paintability and transparency compared to a commercialized paint filler.
