(Wikipedia)

In the IGF project No. 19585 N, novel antifouling finishes for outdoor textiles, such as sails and awnings, were developed on the basis of cerium oxide nanomaterials (nanoceria). The project was carried out by the German Research Foundation (IGF), Cerium oxide nanorods or nanoparticles were immobilized onto the surface of textiles, which have the ability to generate messenger molecules of micro-organisms due to their haloperoxidase activity that induce antibacterial efficiency and inhibit the biofilm formation. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polycarbonate (PC)/cerium (IV) oxide (CeO2) composites are prepared by a melt-compounding method using a twin-screw extruder. The effect of the CeO2 content on the damping property of the composites was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, the composites' mechanical properties were studied through tensile and impact tests. The DMA results revealed that the addition of CeO2 (0.5 wt%) improved the damping property of the composite. TGA showed that the thermal stability was improved when the CeO2 became 1 wt%. Mechanical tests revealed that both the tensile and impact strengths were substantially improved when 1 wt% CeO2 was added. Finally, it can be concluded that the 0.5 wt% CeO2-filled PC composite can be used as a structural damping material. Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The aim of this study was to evaluate the coloration of zirconia ceramic by adding three kinds of metal oxide. This was done with different concentrations of Fe2O3, CeO2, and Bi2O3 in tetragonal zirconia polycrystals stabilised with 3Y-TZP powder compacted at 200 MPa using cold isostatic pressure and full sintering. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to examine the structure of the shaded 3Y-TZP. The chromaticity of sintered bodies was measured on a spectrophotometer. The coloration of zirconia by the three kinds of metal oxide was determined. With the addition of CeO2, the lightness of the zirconia was about 84–87, a* decreased slightly, and the colour shifted to a more yellow-green hue. With an increasing content of Fe2O3, the chroma of the ceramic became more intense, the lightness decreased, and the colour changed to a red-yellow hue. With an increasing concentration of Bi2O3, the colour of the materials shifted to a light saffron yellow. X-ray diffraction spectra revealed only tetragonal phase. Results show that zirconia ceramic can be colourised using Fe2O3, CeO2, and Bi2O3.

It is found that the addition of Fe2O3 and CeO2 not only changes the colour of Y-TZP, but also reduces the light transmittance. Meanwhile, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterisation and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis show that the combination of Y-TZP and the colourant is stable and the structure is uniform. Our findings can improve the understanding of coloration of Y-TZP by metal oxides, and support a quantitative assessment approach for aesthetic performance of dental restoration material.
