We discuss the evolving measurements used to characterize topcoated surface appearance. The influence of carbon fiber on the surface appearance of a thermoplastic resin-transfer-molding (RTM) substrate is related to differences in thermal expansion within the substrate.
The mechanism identified here is then extended to several chopped-fiber-filled thermoplastic substrates where the fiber-mapping effect is manifested in a different manner. We then investigate the influence of thick-film applications to the Class A surface on appearance. Our analysis finds that both the depth and the width or wavelength of the substrate affect the ability of the thick films to cover fiber mapping.Note de contenu : - Class a appearance defined and measured

TopographieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The appearence of high gloss surfaces is affected by topographical attributes, which are presented especially by single morphological characters. Fewer occurences of these surface characteristics results in an almost perfect high gloss. Since the early 1980s scientists have discussed the importance of specifying values to determine types of glossy surfaces, with more recent research showing how these characteristics influence buying decisions. TopographieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : High throughput combinatorial characterization was performed on thermosetting siloxane-urethane coatings in order to find a correlation between the characterization techniques, surface topography, and adhesion strength of barnacles. A series of coatings having microtopographical surfaces with different domain sizes were prepared based on a thermosetting siloxane-urethane system. This microtopography was formed spontaneously during the film-formation process. These surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface energy, dynamic contact angle, and pseudo barnacle pull-off adhesion and were compared to pure polyurethane (PU) and silicone rubber control. Surface energy and dynamic contact angles were measured by an automated surface energy measurement system and pull-off adhesion values were obtained from a high throughput pull-off adhesion measurement unit. The results were compared with the adhesion strength of barnacles. Tribologie (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : For the purposes of investigating the effects of ceria content on the anti-icing, hydrophobicity, and antiwear performances of ceria/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite coatings, ceria/PTFE composite coatings with ceria mass fractions of 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% were prepared via one-step spraying method. The water contact angles (WCAs) on the composite coatings were measured via contact angle measuring device. The antiwear performance was characterized via ball-on-disk sliding tribo-tests. Experimental results show that the addition of ceria with a content of 5 wt% is the most effective to enhance hydrophobicity of the coatings, resulting from the coating surface structure, roughness, and intrinsic hydrophobicity of ceria. Moreover, the addition of ceria is helpful to the improvement of antiwear performances of PTFE composite coatings, when the content of ceria is 1-7 wt%. Ceria/PTFE composite coatings with a ceria content of 5 wt% show a wear rate of 0.388 x 9 10-4 mm3/Nm, which is 80.6% lower than that of PTFE coating without ceria (2.000 x 10-4/Nm) Note de contenu : - Contact angle and coating surface topography
