Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nano-TiO2 pigments in pure crystallographic anatase and rutile phases have been successfully prepared by hydrothermal at 120°C and hydrolysis methods, respectively. The laboratory-prepared pigments were characterized parallel to two commercial pigments of the same crystal structure. All pigments were applied in paper coating mixtures, and their influence on coated paper properties was systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction investigation showed that the laboratory-prepared pigments using the hydrothermal method at 120°C were pure anatase, whereas hydrolysis method produced pure rutile phase pigment. The application of the prepared nanopigments and the corresponding commercial TiO2 phases in paper coating revealed that clay/rutile nano-TiO2 pigments in paper coating mixture decreased coated paper roughness more than blending clay with anatase nano-TiO2 pigments. Commercial nano-TiO2 pigments increased porosity of coated paper at both the 30% and 50% addition of nano-TiO2 pigments to clay, while laboratory-prepared nano-TiO2 pigments highly decreased it at 30% addition of nano-TiO2 to clay, compared to clay only. Blending of clay/nano-TiO2 pigments improved both brightness and opacity of the coated paper where commercial pigments are more effective. Burst, tensile strength, stretching, and TEA were improved in the case of all pigments. The 50% addition of the prepared and commercial nanopigments in conjunction with clay improved the mechanical coated paper properties more than 30% addition (except the cases of stretching and TEA of the commercial pigments). The coated paper samples were offset printed. It was found that blending of clay/nano-TiO2 pigments improved print density. Commercial nano-TiO2 pigments improved print gloss more than the laboratory-prepared ones. This result was found consistent with the results of coated paper roughness. PigmentsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Dual-purpose coated paper, which enables in-line inkjet printing with web offset, can be used for both offset and inkjet prints. This product has potential to meet the ever-increasing demand for printing individualized information on commercial printing materials. In this work, commercial samples were printed in the two presses. It was deduced that low permeability correlates with large color gamut volume. The correlation would be useful to design coating formulations for good printability. Also, we examined the packing of coating layers to identify a coating formulation that provides good printing quality in both offset and inkjet printing. Many combinations of pigments were tested, and the effects of particle shape on viscosity and packing were examined. For all coating colors, pigment mixtures with a weight ratio of 3:1 gave the highest packing density. The mixture of GCC 90 and delaminated clay with a weight ratio of 3:1 was the best selection studied for dual-purpose coated paper. Among commercial paper samples, a web offset coated paper showed the best overall performance, indicating that coating formulations with minimal blistering are suitable for dual-purpose coated paper. UltrasonsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fears have been expressed about the difficulty of deinking waste paper generated by the Indigo printing process. In this study, high-intensity ultrasound has been used to remove ink from Indigo digitally printed papers and break the ink particles down to sizes which are compatible with the flotation process used in deinking plants. The influences of temperature and power density have been studied and both found to have a significant effect on the resultant ink particle-size distributions. Almost 100% ink detachment has been achieved using a combination of ultrasound and aqueous washing. The conclusion is that detachment and particle-size reduction using ultrasound and aqueous washing suggests that Indigo digitally printed papers may not be so difficult to deink and recycle as originally thought. SérigraphieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nowadays, the need for papers and cardboards with improved surface properties is increasing with the development of the packaging industry. The improvements made are not only limited to the paper and paper surface, but also environmentalist approaches are exhibited in printing ink. For this purpose, the use of water-based ink tends to become widespread, especially in food packaging. In this study, five different paper coating formulations were prepared using different proportions of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and kaolin pigments. Latex (Acronal S360D) was used as a binder. All prepared coating mixes were applied onto the base paper surface. All coated papers were also subjected to the calendering process. In addition, three different dyestuffs (14, 17, 20%) concentrations of water-based printing inks were prepared. Prints were made by the silk screen printing technique on the calendered-coated papers. The optical and physical properties (roughness, air permeance, paper gloss and printing gloss, contact angle and surface energy) of all papers were measured according to the standards. Paper gloss, print gloss, ΔE00 color differences, contact angles and surface energy measurements were made, and the effects of dye ratio on printing and gloss in water-based inks and coating type suitable for printability were investigated. As a result, papers can be coated and even calendered to achieve better paper surface properties and printability. In the case of printing with water-based inks, better printability properties are obtained by choosing PCC pigmented coated papers. Note de contenu : - Materials

Vernis en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 535.6 Couleur Résumé : The visual appearance of packaging is one of its most important features. Electromagnetic irradiation causes a change in colour and often leads to colour fading (ie, to diminished visual appearance of a printed product). This research study aimed to determine the combined effect of grey component replacement image processing and varnishing on the protection of prints' appearance when exposed to accelerated ageing. For that purpose, two test charts were printed in a lithographic press and coated with water-based and ultraviolet-curable varnish before exposing them to xenon light. The prepared prints were evaluated by determining the tone values and colour difference, as well as the rub and abrasion resistance. In addition, Fourier Transform–infrared-attenuated total reflectance spectra were recorded to detect possible chemical changes caused by the (AcA). The results showed that the investigated period of (AcA) caused significant differences in the tone values of yellow, while the other primary colours proved to be more resistant. The water-based varnish provided better protection than the ultraviolet-curable varnish. The grey component replacement image processing diminished the colour difference caused by (AcA) on all the prepared print samples, and was particularly detected in tertiary colours containing the mid-range tone values of yellow (34%-68%). Both varnishes improved the rub resistance of aged prints, but only ultraviolet-curable varnish improved the abrasion resistance of both the unaged and the aged prints. In conclusion, applying varnish to prints ensured enhanced rub and abrasion resistance and diminished the colour change caused by (AcA). Finally, improved resistance to colour change was achieved by processing images with the grey component replacement method.
