When the TiO2 surface was fully covered with the block copolymers, the colloidal stability of the TiO2 dispersions at typical curing temperatures was significantly improved because of the formation of a steric layer around the pigment particles. As a result, powder coatings with excellent flow, high gloss, and low haze values were obtained. Because of the high affinity of the dispersants for the TiO2 surface, pretreatment of the pigments with the block copolymers was not necessary. At full pigment surface coverage, the chain length of the stabilizing polymer had little effect on the performance of the dispersants used. Monoglyceride and poly(propylene-ethylene) copolymer triol were employed at different ratios, with the monoglyceride ranging between 50-70% of the total polyol used, and the isocyanate/hydroxyl ratio was kept at 1.82, Some surfaces showed heavy wrinkling when the monoglyceride was below 54.5% and above 60%, yet clear and unwrinkled surfaces occurred when the monoglyceride fell between 54.5-60%. The hardness values increased as the percentage of monoglyceride increased. Hardness, impact, adhesion, bending, and abrasion tests were applied and the samples passed each test. All exhibited very good flexibility and toughness. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5638

New generation waterborne epoxy and curing agent dispersions, and the paints formulated from them, have been introduced with changes from older generation waterbornes. These changes include (1) totally nonionically dispersed paints in place of the older ionically dispersed types, (2) quicker coalescing, mutually soluble epoxy/amine vehicle resins rather than the former slow coalescing, highly branched epoxylamine systems, and (3) utilization of stable, water compatible additives and fillers that complement the nonionic epoxylamine resin vehicles. In this paper, the success of these implemented technology changes is demonstrated by comparing the performance properties of the new generation with an industry standard epoxy/polyamide solventborne paint.
