Electrostatic self-assembly dyeing of cotton fabrics / Sule S. Ugur in COLORATION TECHNOLOGY, Vol. 127, N° 6 (2011)
[article]

Cotton fabrics were pretreated with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonuium chloride and cationic charges were produced on the fabric surfaces. For the dyeing of cotton fabric, reactive and acid dyes were used. Oppositely charged anionic reactive/acid dyes and cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) were alternately deposited on the surface of cationised cotton fabrics. Ten multilayer films of dye/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) were deposited on the cotton fabric surfaces using a padder. The build-up of the multilayer films and the level of colour strength (K/S) achieved are discussed. Samples of cotton fabrics were also dyed with the same dyes, but using the exhaust method, and both types of dyed samples were compared. The washing, rubbing and light fastness properties were evaluated for the dyed fabrics. These dyes showed a molar extinction coefficient in the range of 20 000–30 000 l/mol/cm. These compounds were characterised by strong solid-state fluorescence under long ultraviolet light (365 nm). Absorption and fluorescence spectra revealed that electron coupling originating from broad π-electron delocalisation and the keto–enol form is responsible for the large Stokes shift. These dyes were readily soluble in common solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, dimethyl formamide, tetrahydrofuran and dimethyl sulphoxide and were characterised by means of elemental analysis, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis of solid-state fluorescent dyes show thermal stability up to 270 °C and can therefore be used for polymer application. The coloristic properties of these dyes were evaluated on polyester by the disperse dyeing method. There are different standards on the determination of it, their principles are all related to colour depth. However, the standard methods have some limitations. For this purpose, this study proposed a new method for the RCS based on the new colour depth formula Yangn, which included three methods named colour strength value (CSV1, CSV2 and CSV3). Part I in this study was to investigate the application effect of Yangn on the RCS of different disperse dyes with approximate hues. According to the experimental results of E-type and SE-type disperse dyes, the new method showed its advantages. Firstly, compared with AATCC EP-6, the results of the new method were more consistent. Secondly, under different dyeing concentrations, the RCS values of the new method were relatively consistent, with average coefficient values (CVs) being less than 5%, especially for CSV3 with only 3.59%; while all the average CVs of AATCC EP-6 were greater than 6%. For the calculation of RCS of different types of dyes with approximate hue, the new method presented more accurate results. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Colorants réactifs Tags : 'Teinture pad-batch à froid' 'Colorants réactifs' Index. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : A series of monochloro-s-triazinyl (MCT) and related m-carboxypyridinium-s-triazinyl (nicotinic acid [NTR]) reactive dyes based on the same red chromophore and bearing –NHCN, –OCH3, –N(CH3)SO2CH3, –N-methylphenyl and –OH “second-leg” substituents were evaluated in cold pad-batch dyeing. It was found that both the MCT and NTR dyes containing a cyanoamino second-leg substituent displayed a superior technical performance to the dyes bearing methoxy, N-methyl(methylsulphonyl)amino, hydroxyl and N-methylaniline substituents. The results suggest that these technical benefits of dyeing are derived from the smaller molecule size and electronic effect of the cyanoamino group compared with the other second-leg substituents commonly used in both MCT and NTR reactive dye synthesis. Indeed, the use of the cyanoamino second leg on the studied red NTR reactive dyes offered a combination of short batch time, high fixation efficiency, good build-up properties and good wet fastness properties.
