Tannage Résumé : A chromium-keratin tanning compound has been prepared by treating chicken feathers with acidified dichromate. The newly developed chromium-keratin compound contain ~ 17% w/w Cr2O3 and protein content of ~10% w/w. The chromium-keratin compound has been characterized using FT-IR, MALDI-TOF, EDX and computer aided color analysis. Tanning studies have been carried out with goat skins, where the chromium-keratin compound has been used as chrome tanning agent in place of basic chromium sulfate (BCS). The denaturation temperature of chromium-keratin tanned leather analyzed by DSC shows a value of 112°C and the percentage exhaustion of chromium in the tanning bath is greater than 80 percent. Structural and physical characteristics of chromium-keratin compound treated leathers were analyzed using standard techniques and the results were compared with the control leathers tanned with commercial BCS. This effect enables dark hair to be dyed in various bright colors. In order to enhance this bleaching effect, the concentration of either the alkalizing or oxidizing agent in the hair color base is generally increased. However, this method causes chemical damage to the hair. With the aim of finding methods to obtain an improved bleaching effect without increasing the amount of bleaching ingredients, the authors investigated the permeation mechanism. Cationic bases showed the highest bleaching effect and allowed greater penetration, permitting bleaching ingredients to enter the cortex of the hair more easily and diffuse more quickly. In addition, the molar ratios of higher alcohol (A) to cationic surfactant (C) as a function of the bleaching effect were also evaluated. The results showed an optimum range for this A/C ratio. The smoothness of the hair was also evaluated, revealing an optimum range for the A/C ratio. Based on these findings, a product with an A/C ratio that maximizes the bleaching effect and the smoothness of the hair was successfully developed. Comparison of this newly developed product with a conventional product verified that the new product has a greater bleaching effect and gives a beautiful depth of color while maintaining the silky smoothness of the texture of the hair. The nature of the interactions between dyes and surfactants is one of the basic piece of information for understanding the process of dyeing and finishing of textile material. The role of attractive interactions between the hydrocarbon tails and repulsive interactions between the surfactant head groups on the micellar association process have been studied. The presented work is oriented on the determination of the critical micelle concentration and molar conductance, in aqueous solution of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide by using the electric conductivity method. From conductivity data parameters for dyes – surfactant interaction such as micellar ionization degree α, counter ion binding and free energy of micellization have been calculated. On the basis of results it is clear that critical micelle concentration depends on the nature of ionic group and concentration of counter ion in solution. These dyes showed a molar extinction coefficient in the range of 20 000–30 000 l/mol/cm. These compounds were characterised by strong solid-state fluorescence under long ultraviolet light (365 nm). Absorption and fluorescence spectra revealed that electron coupling originating from broad π-electron delocalisation and the keto–enol form is responsible for the large Stokes shift. These dyes were readily soluble in common solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, dimethyl formamide, tetrahydrofuran and dimethyl sulphoxide and were characterised by means of elemental analysis, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis of solid-state fluorescent dyes show thermal stability up to 270 °C and can therefore be used for polymer application. The coloristic properties of these dyes were evaluated on polyester by the disperse dyeing method.
