A chrome free aldehyde and aluminum tanning system was used to prepare the leather for the dye experiments. For the dye preparation experiments gallnut and sappan wood, which are representative polygenetic natural dyes, were extracted by alcohol extraction; then decompressed and refined under concentrating conditions to produce dye in powder form. To produce natural dyed leather with a black color, 5% gallnut and sappan wood were used and the mordant agent, iron mordant (FeSO4·7H2O) at 1% of the leather weight, was applied in three different sequences. Applying the mordant simultaneously produced a superior result compared to it application before or after the application of the natural dye. To evaluate the softness and color change of leather, an anionic fatliquor agent was used at 12% of the leather weight. An excellent dark black color and chroma was obtained on the leather surface as a mordant agent and complex compound. The excellent results obtained during the evaluation of rubbing fastness, K/S (coloring matter concentration of surface), and color difference enabled the conclusion that leather with a deep black color could be manufactured with this method.
A significant portion of the dyes offered do not fix to the leather and the un-utilized dye is discharged in the effluent, which may be environmentally harmful as it may require a long time for degradation. Depending upon the wastewater treatment methods adopted, sometimes these dyes may generate several highly toxic compounds. These dyes, when discharged into water bodies or land, may also cause severe environmental and health problems. Up to 10% (weight/weight of leather) dye is used in the dyeing process of conventional leather making. There are several physiochemical methods reported for treatment of dyes in effluent, which mainly degrade and remove the dye in effluent and do not aim for recovery and reuse of dye. In the present study an attempt has been made to modify the dyeing process in such a way that minimum dye is discharged in the effluent. Most of the un-utilized dye is recovered and recycled or re-utilized in subsequent dyeing. The visual and instrumental examination of the dyed leathers with this modified dyeing method led to encouraging results. This approach has not only reduced the dye discharge after dyeing but also facilitated substantial reduction in dye input by reuse thereby providing economic benefit to the tanners. The study was carried out for a specific synthetic acid dye and should be also be easily extended to other class of dyes. Note de contenu : - Leather dyeing

Cotton fabrics were pretreated with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonuium chloride and cationic charges were produced on the fabric surfaces. For the dyeing of cotton fabric, reactive and acid dyes were used. Oppositely charged anionic reactive/acid dyes and cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) were alternately deposited on the surface of cationised cotton fabrics. Ten multilayer films of dye/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) were deposited on the cotton fabric surfaces using a padder. The build-up of the multilayer films and the level of colour strength (K/S) achieved are discussed. Samples of cotton fabrics were also dyed with the same dyes, but using the exhaust method, and both types of dyed samples were compared. The washing, rubbing and light fastness properties were evaluated for the dyed fabrics.
