Température de retraitIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Salt-based preservation of hides/skins contributes to about 50% total dissolved solids (TDS) in tannery wastewaters. In this study, raw skins have been preserved by exposing them to a continuous flow of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) in a pressurized reactor. The process was carried out in reactors of two different capacities to ensure scalability. The skins thus dried could be stored at room temperature for a period of 30 days. The SCCO2–dried skins were less conducive for microbial growth than wet-salted skins. The soak liquor of SCCO2–dehydrated skin showed a 90% reduction in chloride content and significantly lower BOD and COD levels than soak liquor from wet-salted skins. The leathers produced from SCCO2-preserved skins and wet-salted skin had no significant quality differences. As SCCO2 systems have been reported as alternatives to all other unit operations, establishing SCCO2–based preservation will complete the circle of total leather manufacture with SCCO2. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nonwoven polyester (PET) fabrics have been extensively studied for various applications. However, the nonwoven PET fabrics have poor wettability. In this work, nonwoven PET fabrics were impregnated in a stable and transparent alumina sol that was prepared by the hydrolysis of aluminium isopropoxide using the sol–gel technique. The Al2O3 particles were coated on nonwoven PET fabrics after the rolling-drying process. The surface morphology of modified nonwoven PET fabrics was characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The SEM and AFM observations revealed the formation of the Al2O3 particles on the fiber surface. The Al2O3 coating was also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The mechanical properties of the coated nonwoven PET fabrics were investigated using a tensile strength test, and the results showed that the mechanical properties were improved after surface sol–gel coating. The effect of Al2O3 on the wetting behavior of the fabric was also significantly improved. Surfaces (technologie)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this article, a new technology is described to manufacture open cell thermoplastic foamed sheets with the aid of surface-quenching phenomenon during an extrusion process. As the gas laden polymer extrudate exits the slit die, its surface is rapidly quenched which results in freezing of cells on the surface, while the cells at the core continue to grow and leads to development of open-cellular microstructure at the core. Influence of chill roll temperature was found to be extremely significant in developing porous morphological attributes. Subsequently, synergistic effect of physical blowing agent (N2) content and chill roll temperature was examined for their expansion ratio and foam thickness. Fascinatingly, with reduced chill roll temperatures open-cell microstructure and high expansion ratio was obtained although its thickness was observed to decrease. Further, influence of chill roll rotating speed on foam microstructure and expansion ratio was studied. Lower chill roll rotational speed resulted in development of open-cellular microstructure; while at higher speeds, closed cell morphology was obtained. The results coherently demonstrate that by controlling the chill roll temperatures ; open-cellular microstructure can be developed in sheet extrusion foaming process.

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this study thermoplastic polyurethane (TPUs) nanocomposites incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared via melt blending and compression molding and CNT dispersion was optimized by using non-covalent surface modification (surfactant). Filler dispersion was further improved by combining two fillers with different geometric shape and aspect ratio in hybrid filler nanocomposites. Synergistic effects were observed in the TPU-GNP-CNT hybrid composites, especially when combining GNP and CNT at a ratio of 6 : 4, showing higher tensile modulus and strength with respect to the systems incorporating individual CNTs and GNPs at the same overall filler concentration. This improvement was attributed to the interaction between CNTs and GNPs limiting GNP aggregation and bridging adjacent graphene platelets thus forming a more efficient network. Hybrid systems also exhibited improved creep resistance and recovery ability. Morphological analysis carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the hybrid nanocomposite presented slightly smaller and more homogeneous filler aggregates. The well-dispersed nanofillers also favored higher phase separation in TPU, as indicated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), resulting in a better microstructure able to enhance the load transfer and maximize the mechanical and viscoelastic properties.
