PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Polymer blends of biosourced polyamide (Rilsan XD) and thermoplastic starch grafted polypropylene (LAB4270) were processed by means of a co-rotating twin-screw extruder, using a solid epoxy resin (D.E.R. 664UE) as a compatibilizer. Morphologies as well as rheological, thermal and mechanical properties of the blends were characterized. The morphology of the reference blend was characterized by nodules of the micron order of magnitude of the dispersed phase (LAB4270) embedded in the polyamide matrix. Even though the morphologies of the blends were not impacted by the addition of the epoxy resin, the mechanical properties as well as the impact resilience were proved to be enhanced. The thermal properties of the blends were as well influenced. A shift of the crystallization temperatures and a decrease of the crystallization enthalpies of both the polypropylene and the PA XD were observed. Thus the addition of the epoxy resin as compatibilizer had proved to be truly effective to obtain a material mostly biosourced with mechanical properties that tend towards combined optimal properties of the different components of the blend.
Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Blends between Novatein thermoplastic protein and polylactic acid (PLA) have been prepared by reactive extrusion using itaconic anhydride grafted PLA. At equal proportions of Novatein and PLA, the absence of a compatibilizer formed a dispersed phase morphology of Novatein in PLA and the incorporation of compatibilizer formed a co-continuous morphology. Incorporating PLA in Novatein can improve the tensile strength of Novatein by 42% and the impact strength by 36% at an equal proportion blend (50/50) in the presence of a compatibilizer. Thermal analysis revealed that 50/50 was the phase inversion point, above and below this composition the material behaved similarly. The effect of compatibilizer was evident in wide-angle X-ray scattering. In the absence of compatibilizer three phases were detected: crystalline Novatein, amorphous Novatein, and amorphous PLA phases. With compatibilizer, the blend was moving towards two phases: crystalline Novatein, and an amorphous blend of Novatein and PLA. Itaconic anhydride grafted PLA improved miscibility between Novatein and PLA, and its use can potentially lead to the production of Novatein/PLA foams.

NanoparticulesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) polyvinylchloride/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (PVC/NBR) (70/30) blends containing 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 phr graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) were prepared by melt mixing. The morphology and properties of resulting samples were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microcopy (TEM) techniques were employed for morphology studies. The progressive incorporation of GnP into PVC/NBR blends led to a gradual decrease in the size of NBR domains. TEM revealed fine distribution of GnP nanoplatelets in the blends. DMTA results showed a monotonic increase in storage modulus along with a steady decrease in damping factor with the GnP content in TPE and TPV nanocomposites. Mechanical properties revealed enhanced elastic modulus and ultimate strength at the cost of a fall in the elongation at break for TPE and TPV nanocomposites as a function of GnP loading. The swelling index of the samples declined with GnP content up to 1 phr after which the swelling index was not considerably affected by GnP up to 2 phr. A substantial increase in the electrical conductivity of the resulting nanocomposites was observed at GnP loadings higher than 1 phr. TPV samples demonstrated higher stiffness and strength along with lower extensibility, swelling indexes and electrical conductivity than their TPE counterparts. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Compared to other conventional joining methods, induction welding offers the superiority of avoiding mechanical degradation and satisfying the need for weight reduction in the aircraft industry. In this paper, a metal mesh was adapted as an induction component in the induction welding of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) with various currents. The effect of welding current on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the induction welding joint was further investigated. The results indicate that induction welding joints with the narrow thickness of the fusion zone and high tensile strength can be attained in the welding current range of 7.05 A to 11.05 A. However, when the current exceeds 13.91 A, the excessive heat input leads to the unsteady flow of PEEK or even thermal oxidative degradation and thermal decomposition, which increases the thickness of the fusion zone and reduces the tensile strength of the joint. In addition, the principal fracture mode presents cohesive failure, thereby promoting the tensile strength of the joint. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The effect of the maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MA) block copolymer on the properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polypropylene (PP) blends were studied. TPU/PP and TPU/PP/SEBS-g-MA blends with different weight ratios were prepared in a twin-screw extruder. The thermal properties of the blends were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphological structure of the blends as well as the effect of SEBS-g-MA block copolymer on the reduction of domain size and particle dispersion were investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results from the uncompatibilized blends clearly indicated immiscibility of TPU and PP resulting in undesirable properties. The thermal properties of TPU/PP blends were improved by compatibilization with SEBS-g-MA. Addition of the SEBS-g-MA block copolymer resulted in a finer dispersion of the minor phase and clearly improved interfacial adhesion. Note de contenu : - Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
