Tannage Résumé : Nanoparticles due to their size and high reactivity towards collagen provide potential applications in the tanning process. The current study aims to investigate the potential of ionic liquid functionalized cerium oxide nanoparticles as a combination tanning agent with minimum utilization of the chromium. The experimental results indicate that the presence of nanoparticles increases the thermal stability from 62°C to 92°C. The physical strength and organoleptic characteristics of the nanoparticles-BCS tanned leather are on par with conventional chrome tanned leather. Antibacterial studies reveal that the leather tanned with nanoparticles shows improved antibacterial activity. Thus, nanoparticle based tanning system invokes a considerable array of interest as an alternative tanning process with minimal and efficient usage of chromium.

The morphological structure, impact toughness, thermal stability as well as kinetic analysis on thermal decomposition for PLA/CSW composites were performed thoroughly. The results showed that CSW was organized successfully via silanization, helping to form well-bonded interfaces, and accordingly, the impact toughness increased remarkably. The thermal stability was enhanced by adding whiskers, leading to increased decomposition temperature and decreased mass conversion rate. Kinetic analysis revealed the great dispersions on the reaction order and activation energy. Though, in comparison to pure PLA, the reaction order of PLA/CSW composites increased based on calculation methods except for Carrasco's, the activation energy of the composites declined independently of the applied mathematical models, meaning that thermal decomposition of PLA phase was accelerated by the introduced CSW. Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An attractive strategy for zero VOC coatings involves blends of hard and soft latex particles. A dispersion of a latex with a low minimum film-forming temperature will form a transparent film upon evaporation, even when blended with a substantial amount of high Tg latex. The low Tg latex deforms to fill space as the dispersion dries, and the high Tg component imparts good block resistance and mechanical properties to the final film. Transparency requires that the hard latex be sufficiently small and well dispersed in the final film. In addition, the two components must have similar refractive indices. Two of our most surprising observations are that dispersions of soft latex particles dry more slowly than those of high Tg latex, and that mixtures of the two particles dry even more slowly. Consideration of these results leads to a new model for the drying mechanism of latex dispersions that takes into account the propagating drying front. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicates that the hard particles in blends improve significantly the mechanical properties for the films. Morphologie (matériaux)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Identification and classification of leathers based on the species becomes valuable and necessary due to concerns regarding consumer protection, product counterfeiting or authenticity issues, and dispute settlement in the leather industry and thus helping in trading standards and protecting endangered species. This is carried out mostly by microscopical examination, though, the use of DNA fingerprinting is a theoretical possibility. Identification of leather species through hair pore pattern by microscopical examination requires expertise, training and experience, and due to involvement of human judgment, subjectivity is inevitable. Recent advancements in instrumental techniques aided image analysis offers a good scope for standardizing objective criteria for species identification. In this study, an automatic recognition of leather species based on the surface hair pore pattern using image processing techniques has been investigated. The signature or distinctive feature of leathers from each of the important raw materials dealt within the leather industry were defined from SEM images using image processing technique in terms of number of hair pores, pore density, type and size of the pores (in terms of area, diameter), inter-pore distance and shape of the pore (in terms of circularity, roundness perimeter). Results of the image analysis revealed that all the four common raw materials have distinctive features in terms of specific parameters. Buffalo leather is characterized by the least pore density, largest pore (11110 sq ìm) and highest inter-pore distance (103sq ìm) whereas sheep skin has the smallest hair pore (200 sq ìm) with lowest porosity. Goat skin has both medium (1256 sq ìm) and small sized pores (364 sq ìm) arranged in clusters with trios pattern arrangement and cow leather is characterized by large hair pore density (2262/sq cm) with more uniform mid-sized pores (2190 sq ìm). Thus the developed image processing technique using the current state of art has the potential to provide quantitative estimates of the leather surface morphological characteristics in terms of quantifiable parameters to identify the animal origin. Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The surface of coatings and plastics is the first target in any degradation process initiated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation or mechanical stress (via scratch and abrasion). Surface damage can lead to changes in optical, morphological, and mechanical properties and can result in pathways for ingress of moisture and corrosive agents. Current test methods for monitoring performance of protective coatings focus on chemical properties and optical properties, such as color and gloss measurements, or invasive tests such as abrasion and cross-cut adhesion. In this study, a macroscopically nondestructive performance protocol using nanoindentation metrology via a well-controlled scratch test was applied to evaluate the scratch resistance and monitor the surface mechanical property changes in a protective coating under accelerated weathering. Polyurethane (PU) coatings with different polyol compositions were chosen for this study. Coating specimens were exposed to high-intensity UV radiation at 55°C and 75% RH conditions. Exposed specimens were removed at specified UV exposure times for surface modulus/hardness and scratch resistance characterization via nanoindentation and scratch test. The effect of polyol type and UV radiation dose on the scratch damage (scratch morphology) was investigated and correlated with the surface hardness and modulus of the materials.
