Surfactants -- Aspect de l'environnementIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : The consumer attitude toward household cleaning products is changing. No longer are cost and performance the only considerations. The consumer is increasingly aware that they need to make careful selection of products, tending towards selection of natural, preferably vegetable-based ingredients that are sustainably sourced and which are mild in the environment once released post-use.
In this paper we will explore an example of how it is possible to increase the bio-based content of a class of specialty surfactants – narrow range ethoxylates, which have historically been of synthetic origin. By switching to a natural, vegetable-based hydrophobe, sourced via a sustainable supply chain (RSPO), we can better meet customer expectation, and will demonstrate that the same high performance of the cleaning ingredient can be fully maintained. In so doing, we provide formulators the option to develop more bio-based, high-performance cleaning formulations, with ingredients that also qualify as EU Ecolabel.Note de contenu : - Consumer drive for more sustainable cleaning - Supported by third party certifiers

Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Grafting modification is a common method for improving the specific properties of polysaccharides. Herein, we synthesised sodium alginate-g-poly (acrylic acid) (NaAlg-g-PAA) as a novel printing thickener via catalysis of horseradish peroxidase and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of acetylacetone. The synthesised products were characterised by Fourier Transform–infrared spectroscopy and polar nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which confirmed that the PAA was successfully grafted onto the hydroxyl groups at carbon atoms (C2) of sodium alginate. The optimal grafting percentage and grafting efficiency reached 51% and 96%, respectively. Compared with native sodium alginate, the grafted copolymer NaAlg-g-PAA exhibited better thermal stability, rheological and printing properties. This work provides an efficient and promising approach for modifying polysaccharides like alginates and could be used as an alternative to conventional chemical modification. PlastifiantsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Processing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) artificial material requires plasticizer that softens the PVC coating. Currently, utilizing unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters to obtain epoxidized fatty acid methyl ester (EFAME) bio-plasticizers constitutes an environmentally responsible solution to substitute conventional ortho-phthalates that are endocrine disruptors or probable carcinogens. However, commercial EFAMEs, even with the highest epoxy value (ca. 5.5–5.8%) so far, still suffer from fast leaching from the PVC matrix, burdening the environment and shortening lifespan of the artificial material. Here, we report a proof-of-principle demonstration of a new strategy to obtain migration-resistant EFAME that harnesses the midchain hydroxyl of methyl ricinoleate and covalently attachment of a pendant acetate ester. Despite a low epoxy value (3.0%), the engineered bio-plasticizer displays significantly suppressed migration in multiple scenarios compared with one conventional EFAME with much higher epoxy value (5.8%). Circumventing the limit confronting previous strategy that highlights the sole contribution of epoxy value to achievable migration resistance, the rationale herein may provide guidance for designing new EFAMEs with comparable performance to ortho-phthalates, thus bringing the old and oft-maligned PVC artificial material industry one step closer to sustainability. MicrobiologieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : This article describes the eco-design of a new preservative in cosmetics based on bio-inspiration of natural extracts from traditional medicines. In order to reach the multiple specification targets, various structures have been synthesized and evaluated to select the one demonstrating broad antimicrobial spectrum with favorable environmental profile and application potential to a wide variety of formulas.
- Methods : In order to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized structures, the method of the challenge test consisting in an artificial contamination of the sample with collection microbial strains and evaluation of the number of revivable microorganisms was used to select the most promising candidate. Validation of its antimicrobial potential was later confirmed on Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, yeast and mold with measurement of its Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) in comparison with known preservatives. Environmental impact assessment of the selected candidate was achieved with the help of ready biodegradability and aquatic ecotoxicity tests performed according to appropriate Organization tes a strfor Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and European Union (EU) guidelinesy.
- Results : Bio-inspired from turmeric and ginger extracts, an ethylated analog of Zingerone (EZ) with the chemical name 4-(3-ethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)butan-2-one demonstrates the strongest activity on Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Moreover, EZ shows a solubility in water two times higher than that of Zingerone thus increasing its interest as a potential preservative. Finally, its assessment of ready biodegradability and aquatic ecotoxicity in OECD-EU tests with a favorable environmental profile confirms its unique interest and fully justifies its use in cosmetic formulas as an eco-respectful preservative.
- Conclusion : Bio-inspiration based on technologies without noteworthy side effects but also on eco-design, particularly through the use of measures of potential environmental impact very upstream of a development, are two fundamental elements for the launching of new eco-friendly cosmetic ingredients. This approach has thus validated the strong potential of EZ as a preservative of eco-respectful formulas. The selection of EZ is also a very good example of the achievement of two key objectives targeted by cosmetic companies for the development of a novel active ingredient : environmental performance and technical performance.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Antimicrobial tests - ENVIRONNEMENTAL tests
