The product has been characterized by FTIR and TGA; the colloid properties of the latex particles have also been studied. The characteristics and effects of the latex as a filling agent have been investigated by measuring such physical/mechanical indexes of treated leather as tensile strength, thickness increment ratio, elongation at break, bursting height and also by instrumental analysis such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and colour analysis. It has been found that the cationic latex has a filling and softening ability and can improve the treated leather’s physical/mechanical properties and the affinity for anionic dyestuffs.
• limiter le fluage ;
• limiter le taux de matières volatiles ;

Tannage Résumé : A collagen-based waterborne polyurethane retanning agent was prepared by prepolymerization, using isophorone diisocyanate polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG, Mn-2000), 1, 4-butanediol (BDO), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) and triethylamine (TEA), the collagen powder was added during the synthesis to modify the waterborne polyurethane. The collagen-based waterborne polyurethane was characterised via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-1R) and size analysis, the results showed that the collagen was grafted onto the main chain of polyurethane, the emulsion had a.uniform particle size distribution, the average particle size was 70nm. The prepared emulsion was used in retanning, the application result showed that the collagen-based waterborne polyurethane retanning agent had a good affect for leather filling, especially in the belly. The shrinkage temperature, tensile strength and tear resistance were all raised. The retannage can also help to overcome the question of pastel shades.
RetannageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The objective of this study is to develop a novel melamine based resin suitable for producing formaldehyde-free leather with improved retanning properties. A series of resins was prepared by condensation of melamine, glyoxal and metanilic acid at varied mole ratios of reactants. Prepared resins were evaluated for retanning performance in leather in comparison with a commercial melamine resin to select the optimal resin. The mechanical and organoleptic properties of the optimal resin were found to be better than those of the commercial melamine resin. Tensile strength, tear strength and elongation of leather were increased by 17.43 %, 10.41 % and 8.62 % in direction parai lel to backbone while the increase in these parameters was 15.17 %, 9.79 % and 6.0% respectively in direction perpendicular to the backbone at same dosages. 100% reduction of free formaldehyde content was apparent in retanned leather and in the effluent produced by novel melamine resin. Pollution load study of the effluent showed a reduction in chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and total dissolved solids by 9.21 %, 5.60 % and 6.97 % for the novel melamine resin reflecting its improved exhaustion. The fibre structure of the leather produced using the optimal melamine resin was arranged in a more orderly pattern as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, thus showing its improved retanning capability. These results prove that the optimal melamine resin is an effective retanning agent suitable for producing formaldehyde-free leather with a reduction in effluent pollution load. This work also presents an alternative for formaldehyde for amino resins to address its carcinogenic effects. Tannage synthétiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : With the enhancement of environmental protection consciousness, concerns have been raised about non-toxic and biodegradable leather retanning agents. According to the European standard 2002/231/EC, the free formaldehyde content of leather products should be less than 150 mg/kg. As one of the retanning agents in the market, the content of free formaldehyde in the Multifunctional retanning agent (MTA) is 372.22 mg/kg and higher than the limit value. In this work, glutaraldehyde as an alternative of formaldehyde was used to modify acrylic polymer and an amphoteric acrylic retanning agent was prepared. Then it was used in retanning process, and its retanning and assistant-dyeing properties were investigated. The results showed that the free formaldehyde content of amphoteric acrylic retanning agent modified with glutaraldehyde was only 4.17 mg/kg. Meanwhile, the presence of amino groups in the amphoteric acrylic retanning agent improved the dyeing properties of leather by electrostatic attraction. Compared with the leather treated with anionic acrylic retanning agent, the residual dye concentration of the dyeing effluent of the retanned leather with amphoteric acrylic retanning agent decreased from 17.4 mg/L to 10.0 mg/L, and the dyed leather had better resistances to friction and water-washing. In addition, the BOD5/COD value of the wastewater after Mannich base polymer retanning was only 0.32, indicating that the retanning agent was biodegradable. Moreover, the leather retanned with amphoteric acrylic retanning agent had good thermal stability, fullness and physical and mechanical properties.
