Tannage Résumé : Chrome-tanned leathers have good comprehensive properties but, tannery effluents with high salinity, chromium and leather scraps containing chromium have a serious environmental impact. Non-chrome tannage is one of tannages that can reduce the pollution. Current non-chrome tanned leather can't, unfortunately meet the needs of the leather market regarding shrinkage temperature, softness, handle and other properties. In this study, a novel combination tannage was developed. The novel non-chrome tanning agent SL was directly employed to tan bated bovine hide producing wet-white. The shaved wet-white was further tanned by Tara, Sellatan RL and Lutan BN and was then fatliquored. It was found that the optimal consumption of the tannins — novel non-chrome tanning agent SL, Tara, Sellatan RL and Lutan BN was 5wt % for SL (based on 150% times of the weight of bated hide pelt) and 6wt% for each of the other three tannins (based on the weight of the shaved wet¬white). The shrinkage temperature of the finished leather can reach over 100°C and the leather has good softness, handle and mechanical properties. Compared with the traditional chrome tanning the conventional pickling process was eliminated, thus the process was shortened and the pollution by sodium chloride was reduced. The quality of the non-chrome leather approaches that of chrome-tanned leather. The non-chrome leathers of pilot production have been approved and accepted by the leather market. HydratationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The disposal of finished leather waste (FLW) has always been a concern of the tanning industry. In this paper, the finished leather degradation solution (LDS) was obtained from the alkali-heat degradation of FLW at an 84.4% extraction rate. The solid Collagen Degradation Product (CDP) of LDS contains 47.1mg/kg of chromium. When the LDS was used for gypsum retardation, with the dosage of LDS increased, the setting time of gypsum was gradually prolonged. XRD, TG and FTIR analysis indicated that the hydration reaction of gypsum hemihydrate was inhibited after adding LDS. SEM observation showed that the crystal morphology of gypsum dihydrate changed from needle-like to columnar when the 1 mL 25% LDS was introduced. This study not only indicated that LDS obtained from FLW can be a new material for gypsum retardation but also provided a new way to deal with finished leather waste.
(Wikipedia)

Tannage Résumé : Tannery wastewater with high content of total nitrogen is a liquid leather waste with a serious impact on the environment. Herein, the removal of total nitrogen from tannery wastewater has attracted increasing attention among scientists in the leather industry. In this paper, a kind of novel modified bioflocculant was prepared based on the optimisation index of the total nitrogen removal rate of tannery wastewater. Specifically, the novel modified bioflocculant (type N6616) was prepared by modifying Bacillus cereus with amphoteric starch using ammonium cerium nitrate as initiator. Then, the single-factor and orthogonal optimisation experiments were carried out to optimise the modified conditions. The results showed that the highest removal rate could reach 77.53% under the condition of the amphoteric starch dosage of 0.35g/L, the bioflocculant dosage of 3g/L, the initiator dosage (0.02mol/L) of 1.75mL, the reaction temperature of 40°C, the reaction time (second stage) of 18 minutes, the rotation speed of 270r/min and the pH of reaction system of 5.0. This paper provides an effective bioflocculant to remove the total nitrogen of tannery wastewater and mitigates the bad effect of tannery wastewater on the environment.
RetannageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The objective of this study is to develop a novel melamine based resin suitable for producing formaldehyde-free leather with improved retanning properties. A series of resins was prepared by condensation of melamine, glyoxal and metanilic acid at varied mole ratios of reactants. Prepared resins were evaluated for retanning performance in leather in comparison with a commercial melamine resin to select the optimal resin. The mechanical and organoleptic properties of the optimal resin were found to be better than those of the commercial melamine resin. Tensile strength, tear strength and elongation of leather were increased by 17.43 %, 10.41 % and 8.62 % in direction parai lel to backbone while the increase in these parameters was 15.17 %, 9.79 % and 6.0% respectively in direction perpendicular to the backbone at same dosages. 100% reduction of free formaldehyde content was apparent in retanned leather and in the effluent produced by novel melamine resin. Pollution load study of the effluent showed a reduction in chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and total dissolved solids by 9.21 %, 5.60 % and 6.97 % for the novel melamine resin reflecting its improved exhaustion. The fibre structure of the leather produced using the optimal melamine resin was arranged in a more orderly pattern as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, thus showing its improved retanning capability. These results prove that the optimal melamine resin is an effective retanning agent suitable for producing formaldehyde-free leather with a reduction in effluent pollution load. This work also presents an alternative for formaldehyde for amino resins to address its carcinogenic effects.
Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The leather making process is aimed towards the conversion of raw hides into leather.
