Tannage Résumé : A chromium-free amphoteric polymer retanning agent was prepared by free radical polymerization reaction of undecylenic aldehyde (UAL), acrylic acid (AA) and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) as raw materials. The structure of amphoteric polymer retanning agent was characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR. Amphoteric polymer retanning agent was applied to the retanning of vegetable-tanned light leather to investigate the binding ability of crust leather to anionic dyes, fat liquoring agent and physical-mechanical properties of the crust leather. The results showed that the synthesized amphoteric polymer retanning agent was successfully prepared. The application trial indicated that the amphoteric polymer retanning agent can improve the binding capacity between leather and anion dye and fat liquoring agent in the retanning process. The dye absorption rate of the crust leather was up to 99.58% and the dyeing liquor was clear. Furthermore, color of the crust leather was uniform and full and its K/S value and drywet rub fastness, thickening rate and physical-mechanical properties were higher than that of the retanned leather by acrylic resin retanning agent. In addition, the crust leather after retanning with amphoteric polymer retanning agent has good softness, and the absorption rate of fat liquoring agent was 99.62%. The above results showed that amphoteric polymer retanning agent possessed the good retanning property in vegetable tanned sheep garment leather.

Tannage Résumé : In this study, investigations were performed on the effect of atmospheric pressure plasma modification after the retanning process on sheep leathers and wastewater of the processes. The plasma treatments of the leather samples were carried out with an argon containing corona discharge at atmospheric pressure. Argon atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) activation was applied to the crust sheep leather surface with different times (0, 3, 6, 9 sec/cm2). After argon APP application, the crust sheep leathers were processed by traditional retannage. The surface properties of the treated sheep leathers were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The chemical composition of the leather surfaces was evaluated by ATR-FTIR and the surface state of the leathers was determined by contact angle measurements. The discharged chrome retanning and retanning wastewaters at the end of the processes were examined in order to determine the differences in the wastewater in terms of COD, BOD5, conductivity, turbidity, pH, salinity, total dissolved solids content (TDS) and total chromium content analyses.

Tannage Résumé : Amphoteric polymer can be used as retanning agent in leather manufacture. It is particularly useful in chrome-free tanning systems since it can regulate the charge properties of chrome-free leather and enhance the fixation of anionic post-tanning chemicals in leather. However, the aggregation and precipitation of amphoteric polymer retanning agents around the isoelectric point (pI) hinder their wide application. Herein, we synthesized five amphoteric acrylic polymers (AAPs) by free radical copolymerization with acrylic acid and five different cationic acrylic monomers. The effect of cationic monomer structure on the aggregation behavior of AAPs was investigated. The aggregation of AAPs in aqueous solution showed pH and concentration dependence. Light scattering analysis showed that Poly (AA-co-MAPTAC) and Poly (AA-co-DMAPMA) were in the shape of coiled linear flexible chains with small particle size (Rg 7.6 nm and 14.8 nm, respectively) near the pI. However, Poly (AA-co-DAC), Poly (AA-co-DMC) and Poly (AA-co-DMAEMA) were in the shape of hollow spheres and exhibited serious aggregation. Quantum chemical calculations suggested that the amide groups in the cationic monomers MAPTAC and DMAPMA enhanced the nucleophilicity of AAPs. Thus the corresponding AAPs could carry a large number of cationic charges to slow their aggregation when the pH just climbed over the pI. The results are expected to provide theoretical reference for the synthesis and widespread application of AAPs. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Preparation of AAPs - FT-IR analysis -

RetannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The effect of histological features of leather on acrylic resin retanning was investigated by retanning pigskin, cattle hide and sheepskin leathers with fluorescein-labelled poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). A deeper penetration and a higher uptake rate of PAA were observed in the belly area of pigskin leather compared to in its butt area. This led to a greater increase in leather thickness of the belly. As for cattle hide and sheepskin leathers whose structural difference in various parts is not obvious, the differences in penetration and uptake of PAA and increase in leather thickness between their butts and their bellies were relatively slight. These results indicated that acrylic resins penetrate and fill the thinner and looser parts of the leather more easily. This fact gives acrylic resins a good selective filling property and is helpful to level out the structure of leather. RetannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The effect of molecular weight of acrylic resin retanning agent on its penetration in leather and the properties of the retanned leather were investigated. After retanning chrome tanned leather by four fluorescent acrylic resins with different weight-average molecular weights (Mw) from 5,000 to 200,000, it was observed that the Mw of acrylic resins was not the main factor influencing their penetration in leather. In fact, the dosage of acrylic resin and the charge of leather were more important factors affecting penetration rate. Additionally, an increase in the Mw of acrylic resin led to an increase in the thickness of leather and a decrease in the softness of leather, which is mainly because the acrylic resins with higher Mw can enter larger gaps between collagen fibers and exhibit a better filling effect. Moreover, when acrylic resins were used together with other anionic retanning agents in retanning process, the penetration and distribution evenness of acrylic resins were remarkably improved, and meanwhile the acrylic resins with different molecular weights presented nearly the same effect on properties of resultant leathers.
