The change in the morphology and chemical properties was ascertained by SEM and FTIR, which suggested that polydopamine was adsorbed at the polyarylene sulfide sulfone (PASS) membrane. It was confirmed that the hydrophilic property of PASS membrane was enhanced through water contact angle measurement. Moreover, it possessed an improved flux compared with the pristine PASS membrane even after high temperature and organic solvent treatment. Note de contenu : - Materials

VinyltriméthoxysilaneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was chemically modified by using fluoroalkyl end-capped vinyltrimethoxysilane oligomer [RF-(VM)n-RF] to lead the PVA/RF-(VM)n-RF composite films. The PVA/RF-(VM)n-RF composite film obtained under non-catalytic conditions was found to provide the water-soluble property; however, the acidic conditions enabled the composite film to afford no solubility toward water, giving an amphiphobic property on both the surface and reverse sides just after the deposit of an oil or water droplet. RF-(VM)n-RF oligomer was also applied to the fabrication of the PVA/RF-(VM)n-RF/B(OH)3 composite film by using the RF-(VM)n-RF/B(OH)3 nanocomposites, which were prepared by the composite reaction of RF-(VM)n-RF oligomer with boric acid. It was demonstrated that the PVA/RF-(VM)n-RF/B(OH)3 composite film obtained by the interaction of the corresponding nanocomposites with PVA under acidic conditions can afford the perfect water-resistance ability even after immersion of this film into water for 30 min to give the amphiphobic property on both the surface and reverse sides, although the corresponding PVA/RF-(VM)n-RF composite film and the pristine PVA film provided the swelling behavior toward water, respectively. Thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA) measurements showed that the PVA/RF-(VM)n-RF/B(OH)3 composite film can give a higher thermal stability than that of the RF-(VM)n-RF/PVA composite film and the pristine PVA film. Nevertheless, most of the preparations imply the introduction of fluorinate chemicals for the formation of the hydrophobic moieties, which are potentially toxic for the marine environment in the case of an accidental release. The present work evaluates the possibility of removing fluorinate species for the implementation of such coatings and their replacement with analogous long-alkyls. In particular, this work presents an easily implementable procedure for the manufacturing of an amphiphilic system that exploits the reactivity of a commercially available –OH-rich hybrid polysiloxane resin. The resin was first modified through sol–gel chemistry that was used in the grafting of a silane-bearing hydrophobic long-alkyl chain, while the introduction of the hydrophilic moieties was conducted contextually to the curing process, through the reaction with a commercially available PEG-ilate isocyanate hardener. The effective persistence of the amphiphilic character with respect to the replacement of the fluorinate silane by the alkylsilane was ensured by the measurement of the hysteresis contact angle. The effectiveness of the persistence of the antifouling/foul-release properties was assessed through testing against the adhesion and deposition of egg white, as a proteinaceous probe, Mytilus edulis (mussel) and Ulva intestinalis (algae). All the tests indicated that the amphiphilic coating prepared from long-alkyl silane performed even better than fluorinate silane-containing samples in this hybrid coating system resulting from the fusion of a xerogel and a resin. The results suggested that the use of a long alkyl silane was an effective alternative to the use of potentially noxious fluorinate silanes, with advantages that boost the ecological benefits and also include the performance of the coating. Surfaces (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of novel fluorinated polyacrylic acrylate oligomers with different fluorine contents were successfully prepared by acid–epoxy reaction between acrylic acid and a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-functional acrylic copolymer, which was presynthesized by traditional free radical polymerization in solvent with ethyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate, and GMA. The UV-curable coatings were prepared with various amounts of the obtained fluorinated polyacrylic acrylate oligomer. The influences of fluorine content on the properties of UV-curable films were investigated by the tests of hydrophobicity, oleophobicity, thermal stability, water absorption, hardness, and chemical resistance. The results showed that the water contact angle of cured films increased from 78.5° to 104.5°, n-hexadecane contact angles increased from 12.3° to 43.4°, the water absorption decreased from 1.27% to 0.63%, while the fluorine content of the cured films increased from 0 to 5.7 wt%. In addition, thermal stability and chemical resistance of the curable films containing fluorinated oligomer were also clearly improved. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : UV-curing inks have several economic and environmental advantages compared with standard printing inks, such as high printing velocities, low VOC emissions and good adhesion to nonabsorbing substrates. However, there are also some drawbacks, such as residual monomers, pungent odor and allergic potential of monomers and prepolymers derived from acrylic acid. In addition, only few examples of UV-curing inks derived from renewable resources are known. Herein, acrylate-free UV-curing polyester itaconates with a renewable content up to 100% and their application as binder resins in UV-curing offset ink formulations are presented. In order to obtain a high renewable content in the polyester resins, Zn(OAc)2 had to be used as polycondensation catalyst, as standard Brønsted acid catalyst led to undesired side reactions. The resins obtained with this synthetic protocol were tested on their reactivity, which was slightly lower than a commercial polyester acrylate. Printing inks formulated from these polyester itaconates showed interesting properties despite the fact that no acrylic acid was incorporated in the resins. Note de contenu : - Materials

Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study attempted to prepare polyimide coatings (PIs) containing 6FDA (hexafluoroisopropylidene diphthalic anhydride) and/or NTDA (1,4,5,8 naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride) in various ratios. 1% of these polyimide chains were terminated with 1H,1H-perfluorooctylamine (PFOA) and PFOA, and terminated polyimide coatings (PIFs) were prepared in the same ratios as PIs. Coatings were produced on aluminum substrates by a 75-μm wire-wound applicator and thermally imidized. Finally, thermal, wear, and physical properties of PIFs and PIs were compared to each other. PIFs exhibited higher abrasion resistance than PIs due to the presence of PFOA. The increase in 6FDA content also resulted in elevated abrasion resistance. Both NTDA and 6FDA compounds improved thermal stability. The increase in NTDA content raised the Tg values of the polyimides. PIFs exhibited higher static water contact angle values than PIs, but the existence of microcracks decreased their hydrophobicity. The gloss values of PIFs were excellent. Improved values were obtained for pencil hardness, crosscut adhesion, and MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) rubbing properties for all coatings. In addition to the pencil hardness test, a pendulum hardness test was also carried out. The presence of PFOA affected pendulum hardness values positively, and the increase in the amount of 6FDA on polymer backbone improved the pendulum hardness values despite the rigidity of NTDA. Solutions de polymèreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The chemical constitution is a critical factor to the surface properties and the applications of polymers. In this paper, the random copolymers of trifluoroethyl methacrylate (FMA) and perfluoroalkyl ethyl acrylate (TEAc-8) with different feed molar ratios were synthesized by radical solution polymerization. The chemical structures of copolymers [poly(FMA-co-TEAc-8)] were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and 19F NMR. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were performed to analyze thermal properties of copolymer. These copolymers demonstrated good thermal stability and lower glass transition temperature (Tg) by introducing the flexible perfluoroalkyl ethyl acrylate with long side chain. At the same time, the surface hydrophobicity of the prepared copolymer coatings was significantly improved, and the water contact angles could be raised to 117° when the molar ratios of TEAc-8 increased to 80%. Furthermore, superhydrophobic coatings were fabricated simply based on organic/inorganic hybrid. The water contact angle and the contact angle hysteresis of the composite coatings higher than 150° and lower than 5°, respectively, were achieved with blending of 2 wt% nano-silica. These superhydrophobic hybrid coatings have superb potential for large-scale and practical applications in self-cleaning and corrosion prevention owing to their simplicity in preparation. SorbitolIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The cyclic carbonate derivatives carrying carboxyl groups were prepared via the reaction of the sorbitol-based cyclic carbonate (SC) with anhydrides including succinic anhydride, o-phthalic anhydride, and maleic anhydride. (Succinic anhydride-, o-phthalic anhydride-, and maleic anhydride-based cyclic carbonates were named SSC, PSC, and MSC, respectively.) The structures of SC, SSC, PSC, and MSC were characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR. Then, the novel sorbitol-based aqueous cyclic carbonate dispersion was prepared. It was found that SSC dispersion possessed excellent stability and its particle sizes ranged from 63 to 174 nm with −73.3 to −48.2 mV for the zeta potentials. A series of novel waterborne nonisocyanate polyurethanes coatings (WNIPU) were successfully prepared by sorbitol-based cyclic carbonate reacted with diamines. The effects of diamine categories and the molar ratios of isophorone diamine (IPDA) and hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) on the properties of WNIPU were studied. The results showed that the pencil and pendulum hardness of WNIPU coatings were all relatively decreased with the increase in HMDA contents. The WNIPU coatings exhibited excellent flexibility, adhesion, gloss, and impact resistance with the molar ratios of IPDA/HMDA ranging from 1:1 to 1:3. Moreover, cured films display good thermal stabilities with only 5% weight loss (T5%) in temperatures ranging from 246 to 272°C. Reactive compounds based on phosphorous and silicon were synthesized and cooperated in epoxy acrylate oligomers to form UV-curable flame-retardant wood coatings. FTIR, 1H NMR, hydroxyl and iodine values confirmed successful synthesis of these products. The effect of the varying proportion of the synthesized compounds on the mechanical, chemical and thermal properties of photopolymerized coatings was investigated. Further, the efficacy of flame retardants was estimated by limiting oxygen index and UL-94 vertical burning test. The synergistic behavior between silicon and phosphorous resulted in an optimum formulation giving an LOI of 24 and VTM-0. PSBAA was prepared by semicontinuous seeded emulsion polymerization in a typical process to that implemented in the industrial scale. The copolymer-emulsified particles were surface-modified by in situ polymerization of 2 and 10 wt% pyrrole to PSBAA solid to yield PSBAA/2PPy and PSBAA/10PPy composites, respectively. The purpose of this modification is to enhance the electrical properties of PSBAA particles, thus preventing the buildup of static electricity on their coatings. The composites were characterized by FTIR, DSC, TGA, XRD, DLS, TEM, SEM, and EDX. The mechanical, antistatic, and dielectric properties of the coatings were determined. The volume resistivity of PSBAA/2PPy and PSBAA/10PPy composites was 2.60 × 109 and 1.2 × 107 Ω.cm, respectively, that is, proper to act as antistatic coatings. AC conductivity (σac) measurements showed that the modification of PSBAA transferred it from insulator material with σac 1.83 × 10−10 S/cm to semiconducting material PSBAA/10PPy with σac 8.33 × 10−8. The increase in dielectric constant from 0.73 in PSBAA to 149.90 in PSBAA/10PPy indicates that the prepared composites represent promising candidates to be used as energy storage materials in electronic devices. However, the fouling composition and settlement rates may differ, particularly due to hydrological factors. This may present many challenges in evaluating field performance of antifouling coatings. For short duration field testing, i.e., rapid field assessment, it may be difficult to reconcile differences in field activity for novel antifouling assays carried out at different immersion periods in a year, especially when there is little knowledge of temporal variation in fouling settlement. To understand how fouling settlement may vary over different periods, this study used a rapid field assessment method to examine fouling settlement on four types of control coatings at five different immersion periods over a year. Results suggested that antifouling assessment of coatings, using short duration assays (2–4 weeks), can be carried out all year round without being confounded by temporal variation. This study demonstrates, for practitioners, the significance of gaining insights on the effect of temporal variation in fouling settlement within a tropical marine environment in Singapore. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new type of UV-curable organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer was synthesized from vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), tetraethylorthosilicate, and colloidal silica (CS) using a sol–gel method. UV-curable hybrid hard coating formulations were then prepared by mixing the organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer and acrylic monomers, trimethylolpropane triacrylate and tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate, with a levelling agent and a photoinitiator. The oligomer was hydrolyzed and condensed from alkoxysilane and CS to obtain the UV-cured hybrid films. The hybrid oligomer and resulting hybrid films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry to confirm the chemical functionality, oxo-silicon signal, cross-sectional morphology, and transparency, respectively. When the concentration of the CS/VTMS mixture in the organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer was 0.50 mol, remarkable pencil hardness (up to 5H) with excellent transparency was observed. The hardness and transparency of the UV-cured hybrid coating films were improved significantly by increasing the CS content in the organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer. Note de contenu : - Viscosity

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Here, waterborne coatings with enhanced physico-mechanical properties were prepared by incorporation of modified silica nanoparticles into an acrylic matrix through miniemulsion polymerization. In order to circumvent the inherent incompatibility of organic and inorganic portions, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate molecules were chemically coupled to the surface of silica nanoparticles to alter the hydrophilic nature of inorganic nanoparticles to hydrophobic ones. Also, for investigating the effect of the exploited surface modification process, unmodified silica nanoparticles were used in preparing acrylic latex via miniemulsion polymerization. The optical and physico-mechanical properties of the acrylic–silica nanocomposite films with 0–10 wt% of unmodified and modified SiO2 were characterized by measuring their surface roughness, haziness, gloss values, UV–Vis transmittance, scratch resistance, tensile, and pendulum hardness. It was found that by using modified SiO2 nanoparticles, due to their better dispersion state and ability for establishing covalent linkage with acrylic polymer chains, it is possible to obtain nanocomposite coatings with improved physico-mechanical properties, high transparency in Vis region, considerable UV adsorption, and comparable surface roughness, glossiness, and haziness with pure acrylic film. However, unmodified silica nanoparticles formed many aggregates in the polymer matrix which deteriorated optical and different physico-mechanical properties of acrylic latex. It was found that the greatest improvement in properties is achieved by incorporation of 7 wt% modified silica nanoparticles in acrylic polymer.
(Wikipedia)

ToucherIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The research described in this study establishes whether measured physical material parameters could be used as a predictor of the human subjective response to the tactile and visual stimuli characteristics of aluminum coating surfaces. Twenty surfaces were used consisting of four uncoated aluminum substrates and four different type of coatings applied on each of the four uncoated substrates. Forty volunteers (20 female and 20 males) were asked to rate the surfaces using semantic differential scales. The results suggest that coatings obtained by matte polyurethane which contains a fine dispersion of silica microparticles have the capability to veil the effect of the manufacturing process of the aluminum substrates on both the felt slipperiness and felt roughness. The dynamic coefficient of friction was found to be a good predictor of the felt slipperiness with a negative power law exponent of 0.86 (R2 = 0.85), confirming that greater friction is associated with less felt slipperiness. The physical gloss was also found to be highly negatively correlated (R2 = 0.87) with the felt slipperiness of the tactile stimuli, suggesting that glossier surfaces could be mostly perceived as sticky. These results provide useful suggestions relating to the sensory perception and experience of materials, helpful for the industrial and product design in numerous application fields such as the automotive and electronics industries.
POCl3 réagit avec le bromure d'hydrogène en présence de chlorure d'aluminium pour former le tribromure de phosphoryle POBr3.Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Materials imparting flame retardancy play a pivotal role in the development of advanced materials due to their ability to reduce the annihilating effect of fire on man and environment. Realizing the commercial significance of epoxy resins, an attempt has been made to enhance their flame retardancy even under demanding conditions. Among the various flame-retardant materials, phosphorus-containing compounds are gaining interest both in academic and industrial areas due to their simple mechanism of action which involves char formation, a barrier between the substrate and the fire which protects the substrate from being burnt. In the present research work, unconventional starting material—diethanolamine—was used to synthesize phosphorus-based flame-retardant precursors. Intermediates formed in first step were reacted with epichlorohydrin to form epoxy resins. Structure of the compounds was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, hydroxyl, and epoxy values. Resins were cured with commercial polyamide, and properties were compared with commercial epoxy resin. Coating films were characterized by various physical, mechanical, and thermal properties like impact resistance, pencil hardness, gloss, solvent resistance, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The TGA and DSC results showed that the char yield value has increased from 3.36 to 8.53%, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) has increased from 72.86 to 82.05°C while the initial degradation temperature decreased. Coatings showed excellent flame retardancy with maximum Limiting Oxygen Index value of 35 and a self-extinguishing behavior as confirmed by the UL-94 test. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The use of wood contributes to the global transformation into a bio-based community. There are, however, challenges. The growth of mold, rot fungi, and algae on the coated surface is of major concern due to decreased aesthetic service life and shorter maintenance intervals. The colonization of a coated surface requires the presence of spores, nutrients, and a sufficient amount of water. This work studied the influence of using heartwood and sapwood on the moisture content (MC) and growth of microorganisms on the surface of coated Norway spruce boards [Picea abies (L.) Karst.]. The results revealed a relationship of heartwood samples having a lower MC and a lower or equal degree of biological growth on the coated surface than sapwood samples. The relationship was valid through a range of densities (309–548 kg/m3) and two different coating systems based on either an alkyd or an acrylic resin. Furthermore, the choice of coating color (red compared to white) affected the MC as the red-colored samples had a lower MC, combined with no growth of microorganisms.

In 500 mM NaCl solution, the coating could not only effectively prevent corrosion of copper by increasing the charge-transfer resistance and inhibition effectiveness of the system, but also spontaneously repair damage with a width of about 50 μm within 1 h. It is hoped that these findings will indicate a route for preparation of novel anticorrosion coatings with self-healing ability. Surfaces (Physique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work, epoxy/2pack coatings containing polyaniline (PANI) in combination with Ag and ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized. The nanoparticles were incorporated with bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether epoxy resin and polyamino-amide. The mechanical properties of the fabricated coatings, such as the pendulum hardness, scratch resistance, and impact strength, were studied. The composition of the fabricated coatings was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy measurements. The thermal degradation and indentations were characterized through the use of differential scanning calorimetry and nano-indentation techniques, respectively. The surface morphology of the fabricated coatings was characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The synergistic effects of the Ag and ZnO nanoparticles on the corrosion resistance of the coatings after different exposure periods in 3.5% NaCl solutions were determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All the results were consistent with one another and confirmed that the addition of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles improved the mechanical properties of the coatings. This effect also led to a notable increase in the corrosion resistance of the PANI coatings. Note de contenu : - ATR-IR measurement

The main target of antifouling applications is to prevent the early steps of fouling, namely microfouling (bacterial biofilm). In recent years, investigations into the development of environmentally friendly, nontoxic products in antifouling coating technology are becoming more widespread. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the antibiofilm activity of commercial hydrolytic enzymes (α-amylase, xylanase, glucanase, protease, pectinase, lipase, viscozyme, and lysing complex) against marine biofilm bacteria (Pseudoalteromonas agarivorans FJ040188, Vibrio lentus FJ200649, and Exiguobacterium homiense FJ200653). The experimental method involved a prevention and detachment test based on bacterial adhesion in a microplate and biomass quantification of the total biofilm using DAPI fluorescent dye after a 24-hour incubation period. Results from the screening of the biofilm percentage reduction in the enzymes, a lysing complex enzyme, were seen to be the most effective in both the prevention of bacterial adhesion and the detachment of adhered bacteria. Epifluorescence microscopy analysis of DAPI-stained adhered bacteria using lysing complex confirmed these results. It was seen that the mixtures of enzymes selected for present study have the potential to be employed as environmentally friendly antifouling additives in marine antifouling coatings. Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Magnesium alloy (MgA) was widely used in biomedical field owing to its good biocompatibility and degradability. The surface of MgA was usually modified to improve its corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and biological properties. Herein, we employed a layer-by-layer assembly technique to assemble both polyanionic and polycationic electrolytes onto the microarc oxidation-treated MgA surface to yield MgA-MgO-PEI-[Ge(HANPs)/Lzm]50, where the gelatin-conjugated hydroxyapatite nanoparticles [Ge(HANPs)] are the polyanionic electrolyte, lysozyme (Lzm) is the polycationic electrolyte, and polyethyleneimine (PEI) is the transition layer. The morphology and chemical composition of MgA-MgO-PEI-[Ge(HANPs)/Lzm]50 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, indicating that [Ge(HANPs)/Lzm]50 were successfully fabricated on the surface of MgA-MgO. The surface of MgA-MgO-PEI-[Ge(HANPs)/Lzm]50 exhibited good hydrophilicity as evidenced by the low water contact angle of 24.5°. Excellent corrosion resistance of MgA-MgO-PEI-[Ge(HANPs)/Lzm]50 was obtained since it can decrease about four orders of magnitude of corrosive current (Icorr) compared to pristine MgA. The biological assay for MgA-MgO-PEI-[Ge(HANPs)/Lzm]50 showed good antiplatelet adhesion and excellent antibacterial activities against both E. coli and S. aureus. TopographieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Sessile droplet freezing on textured micropillar surfaces was observed visually and thermographically. Hydrophobic surfaces with three different topographies were selected, the contact angles of water on which were 141°, 102°, and 138°. Droplet surface temperature distribution measurements from lateral view enabled quantitative evaluation of the freezing stages. According to the experiment, it was found that the surface hydrophobicity decreases with the increasing pillar distance. Only a slight increase in hydrophobicity was found with the decreasing pillar diameter. The liquid water droplet experienced five successive stages to become fully frozen. It was also confirmed that the droplet’s opaque appearance is caused by the sudden ice shell formation at the ice incipience. Besides, the solidification frontier (SF) movement inside the droplet was analyzed. The freezing rate was higher at the SF edge. Moreover, the textured surfaces with higher hydrophobicity were prone to further postpone the droplet’s freezing onset. However, surface topography showed minor impact on the droplet surface recalescence stage duration. Additionally, the droplet internal solidification stage lasted longer on samples with higher hydrophobicity. SilanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This work aimed at understanding the role of silane pretreatment layer in an organic coating system. The study consists of two parts. In the first part, the anticorrosion performance and interfacial property of silane-pretreated epoxy coatings were studied. The results showed that pretreatment with functional 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) strongly improves the adhesion of epoxy-coated AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy due to the high interfacial compatibility between silane and epoxy coatings and that pretreatment with nonfunctional bis-1,2-[triethoxysilyl]ethane (BTSE) remarkably reduces the adhesion to the alloy because of low compatibility. Nevertheless, the BTSE film provides higher resistance to corrosion than the GPTMS-pretreated coating system, because the former is more hydrophobic and thicker. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Waterborne coatings have gained more and more attention as a method to protect the environment. However, the application of waterborne coatings to metals, especially for sufficient long-term protection in harshly corrosive environments, is still limited. Here, we report a self-curing waterborne coating with good corrosion resistance. First, a self-curing waterborne epoxy resin (SWEP) was synthesized by a chemical reaction between the epoxy resin and titanium diisopropoxide bisacetylacetonate in water. The structural characterizations via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrsocopy confirmed the successful preparation of the SWEP resin. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the SWEP resin could be cured by heating without the use of any curing agents, and the cured coating exhibited good thermal resistance. The mechanical properties of the cured coatings were discussed in the context of the corresponding standards. The results confirmed that the physical properties of the SWEP coating were as good as those of a traditional two-component waterborne epoxy resin (DCWEP) coating. The chemical resistance analysis revealed that the water, acid and alkaline resistances of the SWEP coating all have significant improvements compared to those of the DCWEP coating. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization test implied that the SWEP coating provided better corrosion protection for metal substances than the DCWEP coating. Stabilisants (chimie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Spalted wood stabilization through various heat-treated resins has become a popular method for dealing with heavily decayed wood that no longer has enough structure to be usable. Among the most popular resins are the solutions of mixed methacrylated esters, which are often tinted with synthetic colorants to add an artificial colored layer to zone line-spalted wood as well as to stabilize the white-rotted areas. This research found that spalting pigments (technically dyes, but referred to as pigments in biological fields)—extracted from spalted wood—could be used in place of the synthetic colorants, thereby adding additional spalting to the wood without any associated decay (and adding additional spalting while stabilizing the wood with the same type of fungi that decayed it in the first place). Of the three fungi tested, the red pigment from Scytalidium cuboideum had the deepest penetration (complete) of the wood and was color stable after the curing process. While the blue–green pigment from Chlorociboria aeruginosa effectively colored the surface of the wood, it did not appear internally. The yellow pigment from S. ganodermophthorum did not show on the wood. None of the fungal colorants affected the properties of the methacrylation. The results of this study offer an intriguing opportunity to replace synthetic colorants with natural ones, which may be particularly attractive to turners of spalted wood who tend to prize natural color over synthetic.
