Technique des plasmasIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Plasma reactors for the application of silicon oxide coatings (SiOx) are often customized to optimize the processes regarding substrate properties and targeted functionalities. The design of these reactors is often based on qualitative considerations. This paper evaluates the use of a numerical, free simulation software for continuous mechanical problems (OpenFOAM) as a tool to evaluate reactor design options. As demonstrator for this purpose serves a given reactor for large-area pulsed microwave plasmas with a precursor inlet in the form of a shower ring. Previous results indicate that the shower ring may lead to an inhomogeneity in plasma and coatings properties along the substrate surface. Thus, a new precursor inlet design shall be developed. For this, the distribution of the process gases in the reactor for a variety of gas inlet designs and gas flows was simulated and a design chosen based on the results. The reactor was modified accordingly, and the simulations correlated with experimental results of plasma and coating properties. The results show that, despite many simplifications, a simulation of the neutral gas distribution using an open-access software can be a viable tool to support reactor and process design development.
Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coating binders were synthesized from palm oil-based oleic acid and acrylate monomers. At the first stage, a macromer was prepared from condensation reactions of palm oil-based oleic acid, glycerol, and phthalic anhydride. At the next stage, the macromer was copolymerized with selected acrylic monomers, methyl methacrylate, and butyl acrylate. Changing the ratio of the palm oleic acid macromer with both the acrylate monomers in the synthesis gave a higher conversion rate and solid content. From 13C-NMR, the structure of the macromer retained the cis position of –C=C– as in the original oleic acid under the relatively high-temperature polycondensation reaction. The results showed that the thermal stability of the macromer improved after modification with the acrylate monomers. The coatings prepared with the highest ratio of the acrylate monomers exhibited better overall coating properties. The modified macromer coated on mild steel panels showed excellent adhesion, pencil hardness, and water and salt resistances. The Tafel polarization curves showed that the corrosion rate in NaCl solution decreased significantly when the acrylate monomer content was increased.

Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the important materials for orthopedic regenerative engineering applications due to its biodegradability and biocompatibility. Nonetheless, PLA may show insufficient mechanical strength for some bone replacement applications. Halloysite nanotube (HNT) is one of the non-toxic, biocompatible reinforcement for improving mechanical and biological properties of PLA for tissue engineering applications. In this study, PLA/HNT scaffolds were prepared by chemical foam injection molding process. Laser surface texturing was applied on the skin layer of the injection molded scaffolds to enhance the cell viability and hydrophilicity of PLA. The effects of HNT concentration on cell morphology, mechanical and thermal properties, cell viability and biodegradation profile of the scaffolds were studied. The results demonstrated that cell viability increased by 43% in PLA/HNT scaffolds compared to neat PLA. Hydrophilicity of the scaffolds that have thick skin layer was enhanced by the laser surface texturing in two different designs and consequently, cell viability increased about 16%. Surface roughness measurements and water contact angle measurements have verified this result. The alteration aimed at improving the membrane separation performance, which was investigated in the study. In order to enhance antibiological fouling performance of the NF membrane, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were coated on the modified membrane in two different modes. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential measurement, and water contact angle measurements were employed to characterize the formed membrane surface chemical composition and morphology. The rejection of different single nonheavy metal salts, yielded from the modified membrane, followed the order of MgCl2 > MgSO4 > CaCl2 > Na2CO3 > NaCl > Na2SO4. Additionally, the rejection of single heavy metal salts Cr3+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ was 88.95%, 84.04%, 82.69% and 83.47%, respectively, whereas the rejection of Cr3+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ increased to 91.77%, 90.70%, 89.74% and 87.22%, respectively, in the mixed salt solution. Moreover, the rejection of Cu2+ and Cd2+ increased to 96.12% and 94.38% after adjusting pH. As a result of loading the AgNPs on the modified membrane with a suitable mode, the antibiological fouling ability of the membrane was immensely improved by AgNPs.

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Biobased materials are increasingly important in the coatings industry as more companies align their sustainability goals to reduce environmental footprints and develop more eco-friendly products to meet customer needs. However, widespread adoption of biobased materials in coating applications can be challenging due to the lack of available biobased materials that are both cost-effective and performance competitive.
To solve these challenges, we developed a series of cost-competitive biobased epoxy resins using distilled tall oil (DTO) as the feedstock. DTO, a bio-refinery product derived from crude tall oil, is a byproduct of the pinewood pulping process and is 100% biobased. DTO is a mixture of tall oil fatty acids (TOFA)—mainly oleic acid and linoleic acid—and tall oil rosin acids (rosin)—mainly abietic acid and its isomers. Figure 1 shows the molecular structures of the main components in DTO.
The properties of these novel DTO-based epoxy resins can be tuned by changing the ratio of TOFA to rosin in DTO. The three DTO-based epoxy resins listed in Table 1 are amber color liquids at room temperature, have a biocontent range of 40% to 50% and an epoxy equivalent weight (EEW) ranging from 500 to 700 g/eq. They are designed for use in applications such as coatings, composites and adhesives, and performance enhancement(s) can be achieved with proper formulation. This article will demonstrate how these novel DTO-based epoxy resins can help improve miscibility and compatibility, water resistance, adhesion, flexibility, impact resistance, and chemical resistance in 2K epoxy coatings.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL SECTION : Coating model formulations - Characterization
