The surface roughness (Ra) of the fluorinated PC samples was about double that of the untreated sample (0.685 nm), while the water contact angle of the fluorinated PC samples decreased from 80° to 12°. The dyeing properties of the PC surface were enhanced after surface fluorination due to the increased roughness and hydrophilicity. Fluorination using a mixed gas with a higher F2 proportion led to the formation of a thicker dyeable fluoride layer, thereby giving a deeper color after staining of the PC surface. Index. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Comb‐like polycarboxylates were synthesised by copolymerisation of methacrylic acid and nonylphenol polyethylene glycol methacrylate ester, and can be used as dye dispersants. In order to achieve good dispersive ability, three polycarboxylates were synthesised, each having a different side chain density. The side chain density of polymers was controlled by different ratios of monomers in the copolymerisation process. Acidic polymers were neutralised using sodium hydroxide. These polymers exhibit good dispersing performance, such that carboxylate groups are adsorbed onto the dye particle surface and the side chains enable the formation of a thick layer, thus providing the steric hindrance effect. Improvement of dye dissolution in the presence of polycarboxylates was studied. Polymers with a lower side chain density demonstrated a higher dye dissolution in water, which could be as a result of more effective adsorption of dispersant on the dye surface (CI Disperse Blue 79). The dyeing performance of the prepared dye dispersions on polyester was investigated. Spectrophotometric analysis of dyed fabrics using synthesised polycarboxylates demonstrates that there should be an optimum side chain density of polymer in order to control both dye solubility and dispersive ability. The result of turbidimetry and particle size analysis have proven this phenomenon. A comb‐like polycarboxylate with optimum side chain density was a better dye dispersant compared with a commercial sodium naphthalene sulphonate compound, as a result of its better heat stability. Polyamide 6Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this study, the flame retardancy contribution of zinc borate when used together with a traditional flame retardant (aluminum diethylphosphinate compound) was investigated for neat polyamide-6 and for 15 wt% short glass fiber reinforced composite. Melt mixing with twin-screw extrusion was the compounding method while injection and compression molding were the shaping methods of specimens. Three different flammability tests (limiting oxygen index, UL-94 vertical burning, mass loss calorimetry) indicated that many flame retardancy parameters could be improved significantly by replacing a certain amount of aluminum diethylphosphinate with zinc borate. For example, using aluminum diethylphosphinate alone resulted in only 32 % suppression in the value of the peak heat release rate for neat polyamide-6, while it was 82 % (more than two-fold) when used together with zinc borate. It was revealed by evolved gas analyses, char analyses, x-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry that the main contribution of zinc borate to aluminum diethylphosphinate was in terms of a barrier mechanism via formation of additional boron phosphate inorganic content in the barrier layer.
StatistiquesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polylactic acid has the potential to be an alternative to petroleum-based materials in the food packaging industry. In this study, the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles, polyethylene glycol 400, and Tween 80 as plasticizers on the properties of polylactic acid films was investigated. In order to study the mechanical properties more accurately, the tests were repeated for four months. An experimental design method was used to investigate the effects of additives on the measurement factors and finally to choose the optimal combination with the help of the TOPSIS technique. The results showed that the addition of different materials increased the opacity, most of which being related to P400/ZnO (6.82 ± 0.07 mm−1). The presence of plasticizers increases the hydrophilicity of the film and the water vapor permeability. The highest contact angle (85.33° ± 4.00) and the lowest water vapor permeability (0.074 ± 0.002 g mm/kPa h m2) were related to neat PLA film. The lowest modulus of elasticity, the highest tensile strength and elongation at break were related to P400/T80/ZnO (1.18 ± 0.17 GPa, first month), PLA/ZnO (96.28 ± 3.17 MPa, fourth month), and P400/ZnO (76.82 ± 27.22 %, first month), respectively. The effect of plasticizers was significant in most of the measurement factors, but the effect of nanoparticles was significant in some cases such as opacity and contact angle. The results of an ANOVA analysis showed that the effect of film type on the mechanical properties was significant, and the effect of storage time was only significant on the elongation at break. According to the results obtained from the TOPSIS technique, P400/ZnO was chosen as the combination with the best features among the produced films. ThermodynamiqueIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : In the quest to find an eco-friendly, cost-effective and efficient alternative to expensive and non-biodegradable activated charcoal (AC), in the current study the potential of a weed, parthenium hysterophorus (PH), has been explored as a bio-adsorbent for purification of textile wastewater. Root, stem and leaves of PH weed have been used as bio-adsorbents in raw and surface-treated forms and compared with AC for removal of toxic textile dye CI Reactive Red 239 (Remazol Brilliant Red 3BS [RBR 3BS]) from wastewater. The surface treatment carried out using QAS (N-Cetyl-N,N,N–trimethylammonium bromide) in the current study is a novel way to enhance the dye adsorption capacity of raw adsorbents of PH. Characterisation tools like Fourier Transform–infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis and potential of zero charge have been used to confirm the surface treatment. The impact of various process variables like pH, dosage of adsorbent, contact time, solution temperature and dye concentration have been studied. Isothermal, kinetic and thermodynamics modelling for adsorption data have been thoroughly investigated to ascertain the mechanism of adsorption. Statistical error functions like root mean square error, chi-square test, sum of absolute error and normalized standard deviation (NSD) have been used to validate the adsorption data. Results revealed that novel surface treatment significantly improved the dye adsorption capacity of raw PH adsorbents (ca. 15-16 times). Of all the weed bio-adsorbents, surface-treated PH stem showed the highest dye adsorption capacity (105 mg/g), which was 10-folds greater than commercial grade AC (10.4 mg/g at 27°C). For both adsorbents, surface-treated PH stem and AC, adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics, and the Langmuir isotherm was the best fit with film diffusion as a rate-controlling step. Thermodynamic parameters infer the spontaneous and exothermic nature of adsorption. Therefore, in the current study, surface-treated PH stem bio-adsorbent has been revealed as a superior alternative to AC for the removal of RBR 3BS dye from wastewater, opening a new gateway to the utilisation of waste weeds for the purpose of wastewater treatment.
