Stabilising pearlescent pigments / Ulrich Schmidt in POLYMERS PAINT COLOUR JOURNAL - PPCJ, Vol. 197, N° 4519 (12/2007)
![]()
[article]

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Aluminium pigments react in alkaline aqueous media (e.g., waterborne metallic paints) with the evolution of hydrogen. Low- and high-molecular weight styrene-maleic acid copolymers inhibit the corrosion of aluminum pigments in a mixture of water and butyl ether of ethylene glycol at a pH value of 10 very effectively and are much better corrosion inhibitors than high-molecular weight polyacrylic acids or a styrene-acrylic acid copolymer. There is a correlation between the composition of the styrene-maleic acid copolymers and the evolved hydrogen volume: the lower the acid number the lower the hydrogen volume ― resulting in a higher corrosion inhibiting effect. Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Having manufactured the bases it is very important to standardise the bases. Standardisation is a process by which the bases are to be matched with any reference sample along with some specified tests which are usually followed in the industry. This is a very important step after the bases are made. Unless standardisation is done the bases cannot be tinted as one may get a Iighter shade or darker shade or the shade after tinting is no way near to the colour card. It must be understood clearly that the colour and strength are controlled to the system standard and to which colorants are added to get desired colour. Tinting bases are white, clear and coloured for the water-based eecorative paints. In other words Standardisation of Bases has to be done first in R&D & then in production. Standardisation means properties such as weight/litre, viscosity, reducing strength, colour difference (DE), opacity, gloss, full volumes etc has to be defined with their acceptance range in the specification of each base and then approve each batch of base as per the specifications. Spectrophotomètres
SpectrophotométrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the previous chapter the manual standardisation methods were described in detail. Now let us see how the standardisations are carried out using a spectrophotometer. This is the most scientific and an accurate way to standardise the bases. A spectrophotometer certainly costs more, but it helps with its accuracy of matching the bases to get them ready for tinting data preparation. Those who can afford to buy it can certainly look forward to producing good bases that also help the quality control of the white bases when they have produced. Database preparation involves accurate preparation and then application of various paint drawdown obtained by mixing of standardised Base Paints and individual standardised colorant and in combination at various percentages on Black and White Paper. Now some insights about spectrophotometer and its usage. Spectrophotometry is a tool that hinges on the quantitative analysis of molecules depending on how much light is absorbed by coloured compounds. Spectrophotometry uses photometers, known as spectrophotometers that can measure a light beam's intensity as a function of its colour (wavelength). Important features of spectrophotometers are spectral bandwidth (the range of colours it can transmit through the test sample), the percentage of sample-transmission, the logarithmic range of sample-absorption, and sometimes a percentage of reflectance measurement.
