The protective characteristics of these pigments have been attributed to the orientation of lamellar and flaky pigments which produces an increase in resistance to water permeation through the paint film. Use of micaceous iron oxide also reduces the ultraviolet degradation of the binder system and provides mechanical reinforcement to the paint film. The present article deals with the physical and chemical characteristics of these pigments and their effects on the final coating performance. Several other factors such as their incorporation level, influence of pigment volume concentrations, compatibility with different binders and extenders have also been discussed. The mechanism, using micaceous iron oxide has also been discussed in detail. Special emphasis has also been focussed on their water permeability and weatherability characteristics. In addition to this the blistering behavior of the pigmented paint film has been explained on the basis of water vapor transmission phenomena. It i essential to charcterise it carefully before the coating formulation becomes commercial product. The majority of paint formulations are composed of components like pigments, resins, solvents, and additives. The knowledge abut their interaction parameters among the components of the paint formulation is very essential to access their compatibility . The sdesign of an organic coatig/paint formulation requires the understanding and establishing the phenomena involved from the stage of its preparation to the stage of it being used in actual service. In recent years, the physico-chemical properties of individual components and their intercation parameters are being examined more critically before a paint is formulated. This practice requires data on interaction and other physical parameters of the main components of the paint formulation. The information provided here on various aspects of raw materials and about their interaction parameters may help in designing paint formulations. This also provides information about the effect of internal and external physico- chemical parameters on the properties of coatings in service. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : Matériau revêtement Peinture Uréthanne polymère Pigment minéral Noir carbone Concentration pigmentaire volumique Réticulation Adhérence Matière plastique ABS Etude expérimentale Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : These studies show that when the pigment volume content (PVC) of carbon black particles increases in polyurethanes (PUR), NCO consumption increases, and the extent of H-bonded C=O species near the film-substrate (F-S) interface is enhanced. During crosslinking, polyurea (PUA) is produced, and its concentration levels near the F-S interface are diminished for unpigmented coatings, whereas for the same system containing carbon black, the PUA formation is enhanced. Although the presence of carbon black particles at the F-S interface results in diminished adhesion of 2K PUR to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), adhesion is also affected by the presence of OH and C=O functionalities on ABS, which are potential sites for H- bonding to PUR. Stronger hydrogen donor affinity of N-H functionalities in PUA as compared to the N-H groups on PUR leads to increased H-bonding in the presence of carbon black. Enhanced intermolecular H-bonding in PUR due to the presence of carbon black particles competes with the F-S interfacial H-bonding that promotes adhesion. Titre : Reduced PVC and the design of metal primers Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Clive H. Hare, Auteur ; John S. Kurnas, Auteur Année de publication : 2000 Article en page(s) : p. 21-27 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : Matériau revêtement Peinture anticorrosion primaire Protection corrosion Formulation Concentration pigmentaire volumique critique Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The impact of toxicological concerns on the design of all types of modern anti-corrosive primers has been significant as new raw materials, especially pigments, displace their more traditional toxic forebears. In many cases, these raw materials are less efficient in coatings, and more often than not, performance is system specific. If performance and cost effectiveness are to be optimized, attention must be given to well grounded formulation design practices for each of the three classes of metal primers (zinc-rich primers, barrier primers, and inhibitive primers). Care of the important aspects of such design criteria is optimized PVC/CPVC placement. This is specific to the nature of the primer type involved and changes to suit the protective mechanism on which each primer type relies. This article reviews the mechanisms whereby each type of primer affords protection and discusses the role of PVC/CPVC placement to enhance performance.
