In order to achieve such special decorative effects, metal pigments are applied also in printing inks. The possibilities these decorative inks offer to the graphic art industries are of great multiplicity and still have not been exhausted.
The following is a view on production and properties of the metal effect pigments as well as the resulting problems concerning the different printing applications.
The production of metal pigments has long tradition; it has developed from the gold beaters craft which existed already in 1000 B.C. The waste resulting from the gold leaf production was pulverized in a mortar, pasted with a binder and used as paint. This process was also applied on other metal leaves.
For historical reasons, metal effect pigments are therefore called "silver" - and "gold bronze", although - from the metallurgical point of view - they have nothing to do with gold, silver or bronze. They are made of aluminium, copper and brass pigments (copper - zinc-alloy).Note de contenu : - Copper and zinc for gold bronze pigments, aluminium for silver shades

Isocyanate terminated prepolymers prepared primarily from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and polyoxy propylene glycol (PPG) of MW 1000 were chain extended with trimethylol propane (TMP) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as potential ionic centers. The urethane forming reaction was carried out in N-methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) using dibutyl tin dilaurate (DBTDL) as catalyst. The effects of DMPA and acrylic polyol (AP) on the particle size and its distribution have been studied by automizer. The mechanical properties of the emulsion cast films were determined using Universal tensile tester (Instron). Thermal properties have been studied by using TGA and DSC. It has been observed that the particle size decreased with increase of DMPA content and increased with AP content. Tensile strength decreased, but elongation at break increased with the increase of DMPA content, whereas tensile strength increased and elongation at break decreased with the increase of AP content. Fundamental optical and morphological parameters of particulate systems are determined. Colourimetric curves of seven single component and fifteen binary/ternary mixtures are experimentally measured and compared with predicted curves determined using proposed relation. Overall performance evaluation of the theoretical formulation is made by determining colour difference between measured and calculated curves. Results show that the proposed method satisfactorily work to assess the colourimetric curves of particulate matter. The theoretical technique will be useful to study the colour change due to variation in size in pigment dispersions or chemical powders. The selection of initiator system is important for such a development. These developed IPN emulsions of urethane/ acrylic system were compared with plain acrylic emulsion and a physical blend of plain acrylic emulsion with two types of PUD, i.e. aliphatic urethane polymer and self crosslinking aliphatic urethane polymer with respect to mechanical properties of film, particle size distribution and water resistance. All the developed IPN emulsions were evaluated in a paint formulation for mechanical properties, chemical properties and accelerated weathering properties. They were also compared with paints based on plain acrylic emulsion and physical blends of plain acrylic emulsion with both the PUDs. Note de contenu : - Polyurethane dispersions
