After some considerations of important aspects inherent to the environment and humans and to competitiveness and quality, a of new painting technologies is given, in particular solvent-free liquid paints, powder paints, water-based paints, and radiation-cured paints. As a complement to this, mention is made of specific aspects concerning galvanized steel and application technologies, such as cataphoresis and autophoresis. Finally, some references are presented concerning the short- and mid-term future of anti- corrosive painting technologies. The chemical changes occurring both upon curing and upon photoaging have been followed by infrared spectroscopy. In the photodegraded polymers some functional groups are lost (ether, amide, CH groups) and oxidation products are formed (carbonyl and hydroxyl groups). The UV-cured polyurethane-acrylate coatings were found to be more resistant to accelerated weathering than the melamine/acrylate thermosets currently used as automotive finishes. The light stability of both thermoset and photoset acrylate clearcoats was substantially increased by the addition of a hydroxy-phenyltriazine UV-absorber and a HALS radical scavenger. The weathering resistance of painted metallic panels has been markedly enhanced by means of properly stabilized UV-cured acrylic coatings. Zero VOC, low viscosity, sunlight curable clearcoats can be formulated with cycloaliphatic epoxy compounds as well as aromatio glycidyl ethers. Cure is achieved with a cationic photoinitiator that generates a strong acid when exposed to sunlight for a couple of hours. The clearcoats had good hardness, adhesion, and solvent resistance. No cure was achieved with incandescent light or with fluorescent light, which contains only 0.1% UV light as compared to sunlight that has 5% UV light. This work indicates that zero VOC one pack clearcoat epoxy formulations for AIM applications and large objects could be cured by light racks that generate the spectrum of sunlight.
