It is highly resistant to a wide range of solvents (including water), has a low coefficient of friction and low cured film refractive index. It has excellent thermal, oxidative and UV stability, resists yellowing and is suitable for high speed application. Markets for this coating include electronics, fibre optic telecommunications and military applications. A number of copolymerization runs were carried out with different IA concentrations. The effect of functional monomer on the overall conversion, the colloidal properties of the latexes, and the distribution of the carboxylic groups (buried, particle surface and aqueous phase) were examined. The carboxylic groups present in the latexes were analyzed using conductimetric and potentiometric titrations. The behavior of the IA on the wet scrub resistance of highly pigmented paints for architectural coatings was examined and correlated with the distribution of the carboxylic groups. The results obtained showed that the properties of highly pigmented paints are greatly dependent on the amount and distribution of the carboxylic groups. The carboxylic acid distributed in the aqueous phase has a strong influence on the wet scrub resistance and on the characteristics of the final products. It introduces a terminology so that the material class 'yield stress fluid' is defined and can be distinguished from the terms `solid' and liquide. This new material classification is based on two criteria, the equilibrium relation and the flow function. In line with this terminology, an experimental procedure for classifying the material behavior is presented. The second key aspect of this paper is a discussion on the proper definition of the term 'viscosity'. The benefit of the differential viscosity over the dynamic viscosity in case of non-Newtonian fluids in general is worked out. This is shown by the most ele-mentary yield stress fluid, the friction element, because it is the basis of the yield stress concept. Its constitutive equations are given for positive as well as negative strain rates and are also able to represent the preyield behavior. The theory presented in this article is also applied to the Maxwell, Kelvin-Voigt, and Bingham element to demonstrate the working principle. The influence of various parameters such as water content, pH of the mixture, and time were examined. The resultant samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and thermal gravimetric observation. The experimental results showed that δ-layered sodium disilicate was first transformed to kanemite (NaHSi2O4(OH)2 · 2H2O), and subsequently kanemite was pillared with bisoctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride or dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. The tribological properties of typical samples then were investigated by point contact test. The results show that the pillared derivatives have good load-carrying capacity and friction-reducing property.
