We obtain expressions for the melt curtain shape, coating thickness, contact length, contact pressure, drawing force, apparent contact angle, and contact convexity. Specially constructed examples enable practitioners to apply the results without advanced training in fluid mechanics. We identify a process indeterminacy that arises in curtain coating employing a parallel slit. We show that, with a rapidly converging extrusion slit, this indeterminacy vanishes. Thus, a unique solution for the contact length is always obtained. The extension to a viscoelastic fluid is also briefly considered. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) surface analysis established that a prominent ether component in the C is core level spectrum correlated with a polyether-based crater-control additive in the electrocoat that surface-segregates during cure. Laboratory-simulated bake oven experiments confirmed that better adhesion characteristics were realized by removal of this electrocoat overlayer through reaction with nitrogen oxides and high levels of moisture present in the cure environment of production direct-fired ovens. Details of the effect of bake oven atmosphere on cure chemistry for direct-fired versus indirect-fired ovens are presented. Results showed that coatings formed spontaneously on galvanized surfaces upon exposure to ambient temperature alkaline aluminate solutions. Anodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments showed clear evidence of surface passivation. Scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of continuous and conformal surface film comprised on a compact mass of crystallites. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the coating contained an Al-Zn hydrotalcite compound. Coating formation was enhanced by oxidizer and ammonium salt additions. Coatings formed by using best practices were deposited in less than 10 minutes and demonstrated good surface coverage and good organic coating adhesion. HT coatings formed by using best practices showed excellent organic coating adhesion compared to zinc phosphate control coatings. In salt spray testing, the presence of a hydrotalcite conversion coating under an epoxy neat resin was found to delay the onset of red rusting compared to control samples that were epoxy coated, but not conversion coated. Factors such as hydrofluoric acid concentration, sonication time, chemical etching, and activation process were considered in the design. The analysis of variance on the orthogonal experimental results was performed, resulting in an optimal condition for achieving a uniform copper coating with high coverage. Hydrofluoric acid was found to be an essential component in the copper immersion coating bath and a possible mechanism was suggested to explain its significance in terms of magnesium film destruction and magnesium dissolution.
