To accomplish this task, the coating itself must be water resistant but should also possess the additional performance properties expected of modern coatings. Branched vinyl esters provide the building blocks for preparing very hydrophobic binders by emulsion polymerization. Not only do these monomers have favorable reactivity with vinyl acetate but they also react affectivity with acrylates and can be formulated into a wide range of performance coatings. Hydrophobic polymers find use in a wide range of applications including architectural paints, building products and corrosion resistant coatings. In addition to the design of reliable measurements of water resistance, it would be beneficial to be able to predict the water sensitivity of materials based on composition. Calculations of oxygen contents and solubility parameters of polymers are proposed as useful approaches to estimating the hydrophilicity of coatings in order to define the hydrophilic limit imposed on coating by various water resistance tests. Mica, kaolin, and synthetic calcium silicate were used as extenders. Several series of coatings were designed and manufactured employing the following binders: 20 cP chlorinated rubber, a vinyl copolymer, an unsaturated polymer, or an epoxy resin. A simultaneous analysis of the experimental data was performed taking into account that the best performance is attained at pigment volume concentration (PVC) values equal to or slightly lower than the critical one (CPVC). Results indicate that for every lamellar zinc primer, it is possible to select an extender of high oil absorption as the spacer of the zinc particles attaining both very good blistering resistance and anticorrosive performance. This phenomenon is related to anion-cation interactions that function as ionic cross-links and dramatically enhance the physical properties and water resistance of the coatings. We define this process as “controlled ionic-coacervation,” which is a controlled aggregation of soluble polymer molecules without precipitation to yield clear, rapid-set films. The best coating properties can only be obtained by using a “critical solvent combination.” This coacervation process appears to function only with those polymers containing both anionic and cationic functionality. The critical solvent combination requires water plus at least two other organic solvents: (a) a lower boiling (70° to 134°C) water-soluble organic solvent having at least one hydroxyl group and (b) a higher boiling (135 to about 250°C) organic solvent. Loss of only a small amount of solvent from a recently applied coating formulation causes the coating to rapidly become tack-free. Drying times can be further reduced by immersion in water shortly after the coatings become tack-free. Quaternary ammonium groups furnish the cationic functionality and the anionic functionality is either weak-acid groups, such as carboxylate, or strong-acid groups such as sulfonate. Polyzwitterionic type polymers that have carboxylic acid functionality are cationic (and soluble) at low pH because the weak acid is protonated. Increasing the pH yields anionic carboxylate groups that produce anion-cationic interchain interactions and insolubility. Dissolved carbon dioxide can keep the pH low enough to prevent carboxylate formation. Consequently, controlled evolution of carbon dioxide during the coating process yields rapid-set coatings. The latter can feature alternating structure and peculiar material properties associated with fluorine or fluorinated groups substitution onto the polymer backbone. Improved efficacy and durability of the resulting coating, highly desirable for the consolidation and protection of highly valued works of art, was achieved through a systematic approach invoiving a detailed study of their photodegradation behavior, and extensive testing of protection efficacy upon application onto micro- and macroporous stone substrates of different chemical composition and morphology.
