Tannage Résumé : Collagen fibers obtained from solid fibrous wastes generated in tannery have a high potential of being used in developing green composites. Earlier studies in our laboratory demonstrate that nonwoven composites can be derived from collagen fiber network using paper-making technology. The purpose of this work was to fabricate green composites based on gelatin and vegetable-tanned collagen fibers (VCF), using a non-toxic and naturally occurring compound, genipin, as cross-linking agent. VCF were obtained from split hide that has been tanned with vegetable tannins by mechanical milling technique. The VCF content in the networks of gelatin was varied from 10 to 40% (w/w) in dry weight relative to that of the gelatin. The structure, mechanical properties, thermal properties and water resistance of the composite films have been investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), mechanical testing, thermogravimetric analysis and swelling measurement. The results from those studies revealed that VCF and gelatin could mix with each other homogeneously under alkaline condition and the mechanical properties of the composite films at wet state were improved significantly over that of pure gelatin film. In addition, the composite films showed higher water resistance and thermal resistance than the control. FTIR analysis confirmed the molecular interactions between gelatin and VCF and the formation of cross-links between primary amino groups on gelatin and VCF. Our results indicated that VCF can be used as environmentally friendly and cost-effective potential reinforcing agent for green composites, providing better properties than the original biopolymer matrix. The genipin cross-linked gelatin/VCF composite film can be a promising candidate for the biomedical and packaging applications.

Tannage Résumé : The process of preparation of a large number of syntans is based on enhancement of the molecular weight of low molecular weight aromatic/aliphatic monomers etc., through addition polymerization and condensation reactions. The disadvantage associated with condensation process is the use of formaldehyde, which is a proven carcinogen. In addition, one of the major drawbacks with chrome tanning, the lack of fullness, is addressed during post tanning processes by employing synthetic tanning agents. With these issues in focus, formaldehyde free aluminum based melamine syntan has been prepared having particle size distribution in the range of 450-700 nm and stable up to pH 4.5. The prepared syntan has been used as retanning agent in leather processing. The experimental leather exhibits superior organoleptic properties such as fullness, grain tightness, and physical strength characteristics such as tensile, tear strength compared to control leather. Also, experimental leather exhibits higher dye intensity compared to control leather. It is evident from the air permeability and pore size distribution analysis that the prepared product has significantly arrested the pores thereby increasing the fullness of leather. Scanning electron microscopic image shows that the experimental leathers have a flat and compact fiber structure.
Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The thermo-optical behavior of immiscible PS/PC blends filled with silica nanoparticles was studied in order to get some information upon the location of nanoparticles in the polymer blend phases and interface using optical microscopy. The systems were designed taking into account rheological and optical requirements, having droplet-matrix morphology, with particle size in the range of the visible light wavelength. The melt blending procedure helped to set the nanoparticles at specific locations including within the PC minor phase, PS matrix phase and PS/PC interphase, which was confirmed via transmission electron microscopy. The light scattering was measured via the normalized transmitted light intensity over temperature, encompassing the Tg of the two polymers. The PS/PC blends showed an increase in the light scattering as compared to the pure polymers, which is magnified upon increasing the PC content. The addition of the nanosilica forming PS/PC/Nanosilica systems greatly reduces the light scattering, particularly above the Tg of the PS phase. The use of hydrophilic nanosilica does not show any appreciable hysteresis upon comparing data from heating and cooling cycles. This type of silica stays mainly trapped within the PC dispersed phase, little interfering with the light scattering, which happens at the polymer-polymer interface. On the other hand, the use of hydrophobic nanosilica does show a clear hysteresis. The hydrophobic silica located at the PS/PC interphase, interfere with the light scattering intensity at this interface, and can be used to identify its presence. The proposed procedure can help control the mixing process, thus improving the effective action of the nanoparticles in the final properties of polymer systems.

Tannage Résumé : Exploring the application of natural biopolymers in leather manufacture is a need of the hour to achieve sustainability. The present research work explores the possibility of using modified biopolymer nanoparticles as a tanning agent. Starch, a polysaccharide with high functionalization, is converted into Nano Bio Aldehyde (NBA) through periodate oxidation as water-in-oil microemulsion method. The synthesized product was characterized by its physico-chemical nature. The prepared NBA shows an aldehyde content of 85%, which endorses its application as a tanning agent. Experimental leather trials were carried out to assess the tanning efficacy and found that NBA tanned leathers show a shrinkage temperature of 90°C. Physical characteristics of the experimental leathers were found to be 24 N/mm2 and 90 N for tensile and tear strength, respectively. The study provides a holistic understanding of modified biopolymer as a nano tanning agent to manufacture leather. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials

Poly-e-caprolactoneIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Short fibres are often used as reinforcing materials with thermoplastic polymers to improve the dielectric properties of the composites. In this work, the effects of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB)-fibre loading on polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer were extensively studied. The synthesis of OPEFB-PCL composites were prepared via melt blend method. Theoretical and experimental analysis of electromagnetic (EMI) propagation, absorption and shielding effectiveness (SE) properties of the composite were also studied. The magnitudes of S-parameters for OPEFB fiber-reinforced PCL composites with different percentages of filler were measured by a rectangular waveguide connected with a microwave vector network analyzer (VNA) at (8 – 12) GHz frequency. Whilst the dielectric properties were studied using an open ended coaxial probe. The morphological characterization of the OPEFB-PCL composite was carried out using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This work showed that XRD profile patterns slightly changed duo to the filler loading increment which result a reduction in both dielectric constant and loss factor. However, the relative permittivity of pure oil palm fibre and PCL was measured as (1.8-j*0.08) and (2.929-j*0.3242) respectively. In addition, the composition of 12.5 wt% filler gave the highest dielectric constant and loss factor values. However, the reflection loss increases to filler content increments at the maximum frequency of 12 GHz. The excellent behavior of these polymer composites makes them superior nominees for microwave low absorption materials.
