To obtain a flame retardant agent with acid functionality, 9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and bio-based itaconic acid were first reacted. The synthesized acid then was reacted with glycidyl methacrylate to form a difunctional phosphorus-containing methacrylate flame retardant monomer. The flame retardant monomer was added to a reactive monomer matrix with a photoinitiator to prepare UV-curable coatings. The molecular structure of the flame retardant was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared-attenuated total reflection spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The flame retardant behavior of coatings was determined using limiting oxygen index. Thermal behaviors of the films were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy was used to determine the elemental composition and to observe the morphology of the coatings. The properties (water adsorption, gel content, etc.) of the coatings were also studied. It was found that the addition of DOPO resulted in a significant improvement in the flame retardant and thermal properties of the coatings. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS :

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A phosphorus-containing epoxy resin has been derived from a renewable resource, sebacic acid (SA), and formulated for flame-retardant applications. The synthesized epoxy resin was characterized by physicochemical and spectral analysis including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Curing of the epoxy resin mixture was carried out with polyamide hardener at 1:1 stoichiometry on equivalent weight basis. The developed coatings were characterized in terms of their mechanical, solvent, gel content, water absorption, chemical, thermal, and flame-retardant properties, while the glass-transition temperature and thermal stability of the coatings were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. The results revealed that the coatings with added SA-based epoxy resin showed good mechanical, chemical, and solvent-resistance properties. The thermal profile of the coatings manifested that the char yield increased with the concentration of the SA-based epoxy resin. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 tests were performed to understand the flame-retardancy behavior of the synthesized coatings, revealing an enhancement as the concentration of phosphorus-containing epoxy resin was increased. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Five flame retardants obtained as commercial products or prepared by the laboratory, including amino sulfonic ammonium [sulphamic acid], borax, ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol-dihydrogenphosphate bisestermelamine and phosphated amino resin, were selected to treat wet blue pig. A unified treatment process was used with type and dosage of flame retardant as the two running parameters. The flammability of the leather was tested by two methods - vertical flame test (ALCA Method E 50) and oxygen index test method (ASTM D 2863-74). Besides the fire-safety characteristics, other physical and mechanical properties of leather samples, such as tensile strength, tear strength, breaking stretch [elongation], thickness, Ts, etc. were also evaluated. The results indicate that all of the above flame retardants can enhance the flame resistance of leather.
According to the oxygen index (OI) value of the leather samples treated with different flame retardants (12%), the performance of flame retardants on leather can be ranked as : ammonium polyphosphate > borax > phosphated amino resin > pentaerythritol-dihydrogenphosphate bisester-melamine > amino sulfonic ammonium [sulphamic acid]. The results of vertical flammability test indicate that all the tested flame-retardant chemicals can improve the fire resistance of leather and that, ammonium polyphosphate is the best flame retardant at the dosage of 12%. The results of the mechanical properties tests show that all these chemicals, except pentaerythritoldihydrogenphosphate bisester-melamine, have an influence on the leather’s thickness, handle and grain condition and reduce the strength of the leather to a greater or lesser extent.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials - Preparation of leather samples - Oxygen Index Test - Vertical Flame Test - Determination of other Properties

Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Developing intumescent fire-retardant coatings (IFRCs) combining superior smoke suppression and water resistance is crucial for their industrial applications. Herein, novel 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-decorated zirconium phosphate (ZrP-D) nanosheets are synthesized and employed in the IFRCs. The ZrP-D nanosheets feature multifunctionality, which simultaneously improve the fire resistance, smoke suppression, thermal stability and water tolerance of IFRCs. Notably, introducing 3wt% ZrP-D decreases the backside temperature of IFRC from 293.9 to 166.3°C by ~ 43.4% in fire resistance test, followed by 47.9%, 33.5% and 89.4% reductions in peak heat release rate, total heat release and total smoke release. Moreover, this IFRC exhibits improved thermal stability and water tolerance, of which char yield and water contact angle reach up to 64% and 82.7°, respectively. When exposed to high-temperature flame, the ZrP-D nanoplatelets mainly function in condensed phase, which significantly increases the expansion and compactness of residual char due to the barrier and catalytic charring effects, thus suppressing the heat release and smoke diffusion. This work provides a rational design for creating intumescent fire-retardant coatings combining smoke suppression and water resistance, thus possessing broad prospects in industry.
