Passive fire protection, as defined by the Passive Fire Protection Federation, is the primary measure integrated within the layout and structure of a building to provide inherent fire safety and protection against fire, heat and smoke hazard.
Passive lire protection's ultimate target is to save people's lives, this goal is pursued by taking measures in all aspects of building and construction fire safety with the specific aim of gaining time, either to control the fire or to evacuate the building : time is of the essence in any fire situation. Reactive coatings primary rating is time, which is the delay for structures to reach a given temperature in a fire situation.
Reactive coatings are also called intumescent coatings and are a fundamental tool for fire safety, together with intumescent products, such as seals and mastics used to plug penetration gaps. These are the basic elements utilised in a building's passive fire protection : not only do they retard drastically fire propagation, the flame retardant and smoke stopping capabilities of these components also enable rescue and emergency services to undertake their jobs in a more controlled environment.
Finally, damage to the building, contents and surroundings by flames or smoke may be significantly reduced.Note de contenu : - HOW REACTIVE COATINGS WORK : Intumescence steps - Fire protection for steel structures - Fire resistance Standard Summary, EN 13381-8

Consequently, to improve formulations and understand the performance of such coatings, it is of great industrial and scientific interest to establish relationships between the char properties and the critical heating times of coated steel plates. In this work, a so-called Stratification Parameter (SP) that combines the relative expansions and insulation efficiencies of individual char layers (termed the sponge-like, the macroporous, and the compact phase, respectively), is introduced to characterize the properties of the multilayered intumescent coating char. An approximate linear relationship was revealed between the SP of the char and the fire-resistance performance (i.e., critical times to 400 and 550°C) of the intumescent coating. Furthermore, owing to the mapped-out exponential relationship between the dynamic viscosity minimum and the char appearance, it was discovered that the SP of the char can be effectively used to point out the required dynamic viscosity change of an intumescent coating to form a given char. Finally, results of thermogravimetric analyses suggest that constraining the coating mass loss during char degradation (to less than 28 wt% for the coatings of the present work) may prevent the formation of the less efficient sponge-like phase. The stratification methodology developed can be used to estimate expected thermal insulation properties of non-uniform hydrocarbon intumescent coating chars.

Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A fireproof composition based on ammonium polyphosphate and pentaerythritol with a number of functional additives was developed and studied. The additives are able to form a protective char during fire exposure below the thermal decomposition temperature of the polymer composites. The decrease in the char formation temperature of the fire-protective coating provides a molar excess of ammonium polyphosphate with respect to the mole fractions of pentaerythritol and aluminum hydroxide. Introducing the latter in the composition of the flame-retardant coating also contributes to the decrease in the char formation temperature. The fire-protection coating can be used to protect various combustible materials, e.g., wood, laminates, plastics, etc. DOI : 10.1007/s11998-019-00221-6 En ligne : https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs11998-019-00221-6.pdf Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=33019

Revêtements en phase aqueuse -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Large-scale addition of hydrophilic solid filler (i.e., ammonium polyphosphate) into waterborne intumescent fire-retardant coatings can cause many problems such as poor compatibility, easy absorption of moisture, and poor durability. In this work, microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate with melamine formaldehyde resin (MFAPP) was prepared and applied in intumescent fire-retardant coatings to solve the problems mentioned. Due to the hydrophobicity of melamine formaldehyde (MF) resin, MFAPP exhibited better water resistance, thermal stability, and compatibility with polymer matrix, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size test, water solubility, water contact angle, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effect of the MFAPP on durability and fire resistance of the fire-retardant coatings test were investigated by the static immersion test, fire resistance test, TGA, and SEM. Even immersed in distilled water for 12 h, the coatings containing MFAPP did not show obvious damage, indicating microencapsulation improved the water resistance of coatings. Furthermore, the fire-resistant time and thermal stability of the waterborne intumescent fire-retardant coatings were also improved remarkably by utilizing the microencapsulation of ammonium polyphosphate. (Wikipedia)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The method of preparing polyolefin foam with good flame retardancy, thermal stability, and physical and mechanical properties was investigated. Foaming condition of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was investigated with triphenyl phosphate (TPP) as plasticizer, NaHCO3 as foaming agent. The influence of modified expandable graphite (EGP) and ammonium polyphosphate (II) on foam density, compression strength, combustion characteristics and thermal stability was explored. Results verified that EGP presented better dilatability and flame retardancy than the normal expandable graphite. Addition of EGp improved the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 15NaHCO3/100 LLDPETPP/30EGp foam from 18.8% to 24.6%. Furthermore, the combination of EGp and ammonium polyphosphate (II) (APP) at the mass ratio of 2:1 improved the LOI of 15NaHCO3/100 LLDPETPP/20EGp/10APP sample to 27.9%, and the vertical burning UL-94 level reached V-0, indicating that this material was flame retardant. Although these additives made 15NaHCO3/100 LLDPETPP/20EGp/10APP composite exhibit a high density of 142.5 kg m−3, which was increased by 12.3 wt% relative to the 15NaHCO3/100 LLDPETPP foam, it could improve the compressive strength to 0.4747 MPa, which was about 2.7 times that of the matrix. The thermal stability of the material was also enhanced. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Raw materials - Sample preparation - Measurement and characterization of different properties
