Tannage Résumé : The paper develops a method for determining Al2O3 in plant-aluminum and aluminum tanned leathers. A leather sample of 2.000 g is burnt to ashes at 700°C; Al2O3 in the ash is melted with 1.5 g Na2B4O7 at 950°C for 20 minutes. The melt is dissolved in nitric acid, 1M, and diluted in a 250.0 ml measurement flask. Al3+ in the sample solution is back-titrated with standard solutions of EDTA and Pb(NO3)2. Using this method, we analysed samples of lamb and pig leather, tanned with the plant-aluminum tans sumac and quebracho. The results have good reproducibility, 0.04 % Al2O3 for a sample containing 2.39 % Al2O3. The losses of Al2O3 during melting are less than 4 %. After its chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), ECGE was used as a reactive diluent to copolymerize with castor oil-based polyurethane acrylate (PUA) and a series of UV-curable coatings were prepared. Results showed that the viscosity and volume shrinkage of the UV-curable PUA system decreased significantly after the introduction of cardanol-based monomer while maintaining reasonably high bio-renewable contents; when containing 50% of ECGE, the biomass content reaches 66.2%, which is 1.41 times that of pure resin. In addition, the coating properties were evaluated to determine hardness, adhesion, flexibility, and water resistance. The properties of UV-curable thermoset were also studied using tensile testing, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The cardanol-based coatings showed excellent adhesion, flexibility, medium hardness, and enhanced char yield although tensile strength, tensile modulus and glass transition temperatures were somewhat diminished. All these performances can be attributed to the unique architectures of ECGE that combined the structural features of rigid benzene ring and long flexible alkyl chains. The UV-curing behavior was determined using real-time IR, and the results indicated that the conversion of unsaturated bond was increased with more concentration of ECGE. Spectroscopie des rayons XIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper analyzes the chemical composition of the interface resulting from the application of an organic coating (lacquer) containing phosphating reagents on galvanized steel, galvanneal, and galfan substrates and its stability after short periods of exposure to condensing humidity and UV light (UVCON test). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has shown that the lacquer drying process gives rise to a number of discontinuities on the lacquer surface (pores), exposing the phosphate layer formed on the original metallic coating surface. It is interesting to note the detection of fluoride and nitrite ions and phosphoric acid not combined with zinc (perhaps as HPO42- and H2PO4-) on the lacquered surfaces before testing, which suggests a tendency of these species to concentrate on the outer surface of the phosphate layer or at the lacquer-phosphate layer interface (in zones covered by the lacquer). After one day of exposure to the UVCON test, XPS reveals the disappearance of the fluoride and nitrite ions and of the free phosphoric acid. After 15 days of exposure to the UVCON test, the carbon content is seen to have decreased considerably, while the zinc, phosphorus, and titanium contents have risen. The low atomic percentages of carbon (only moderately higher than those obtained with the coatings in bare state) and Zn/P atomic ratios close to 1.5 suggest the removal of a very substantial percentage of the lacquer, leaving the zinc phosphate formed on the surface of the different metallic coatings exposed. This quick and significant drop in the lacquer content barely seems to have a repercussion on the degradation of the metallic substrate during the UVCON test, since its visual aspect remains unaltered.
