RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the 1980s, a new class of thickeners, i.e., associative thickener (AT), was introduced for water-based coatings to improve their rheology. Principally, they work by associating with polymer particles present in the paint. Manufacturers of ATs provide some generic guidelines to choose them based on economy, regulatory restrictions, and polymer type; however, it is very difficult to choose suitable ATs until and unless their interactions with polymer particles are studied by rheology. This article focuses on developing a rheological approach to identify a suitable AT for a paint formulation. In this approach, a rheology viscosity curve was used on AT–emulsion polymer mix and AT–emulsion polymer–surfactant mix to short-list a suitable AT. Subsequently, the shortlisted ATs were tested in the paint formulation to study their efficacy. Commonly used, hazardous air pollutants (HAPs)-free, commercially available ATs, viz. hydrophobically modified ethoxylated urethane thickener (HEUR) and hydrophobically modified poly(acetal- or ketal-polyether) thickener (HMPE), were selected to study their interaction with a unique surfactant-stabilized acrylic–polyurethane hybrid emulsion. A range of acrylic–polyurethane hybrid emulsions were prepared by increasing the polyurethane content in the emulsion. As the polyurethane content increased in the emulsion polymer, the thickening efficiency of AT decreased. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : Conventional rheological techniques in the linear viscoelastic region provide insights about the spatial configuration of the microstructural components of personal care formulations in their ‘at‐rest’ state. However, they fail to describe the textural experience associated with large and fast deformations during daily consumer application. In this study we present a non‐conventional rheological technique : large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS)—for probing the transformation of a material during its application. This technique is proposed a practical tool for formulators in their efforts to design products with desired textural attributes.
- Methods : A non‐linear rheological technique termed LAOS was utilized to capture the textural expression perceived by consumers. Lissajous plots (stress vs. strain or strain rate) provide a fingerprint of the formula and are utilized to both analyse the thickening mechanism and monitor the influence of various parameters, such as the chemistry, molecular properties, colloidal parameters and processing conditions.
- Results : In this study, we showcased several approaches for modifying the texture of personal care formulations and show the influence of various parameters on the characteristics of the Lissajous curves and their relation to sensorial perception. This fingerprinting technique shows that increasing the molecular weight or hydrophobic modification boosts the elasticity and thickening efficiency of a given polymer. Differences in the chemistry of rheological ingredients also influence the characteristic Lissajous fingerprint. In high concentration surfactant systems, which tend to form worm‐like micelles, their unique Lissajous fingerprints indicate structure rebuild because of fast kinetics at large but slow deformations. Analysis of lamellar gel‐based hair conditioner formulations demonstrates the unique high yield stress of these types of materials, accompanied by the fast breakdown transition from a solid to viscous structure because of their crystalline lamellar gel structure.
- Conclusion : The LAOS technique presented in this article is intended to better capture the textural expression perceived by consumers. Lissajous plots—generated from the LAOS experimental data—provide a fingerprint of the tested formula and are utilized to both analyse the thickening mechanism and monitor the influence of various parameters, such as the chemistry and molecular weight of the thickener, pH of the formula medium and influence of other ingredients in the formula (surfactants, emulsifiers, etc.).Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Hair conditioner formulations thickened with lamellar gel structure and HMHEC.

SérigraphieIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The rheology of printing pastes using sodium alginate and modified xanthan as mixed thickeners has been measured by steady shear tests and dynamic strain sweep tests. The rheological results showed that, with a small addition of modified xanthan to sodium alginate, the flowability of the mixed printing pastes was better than that with sodium alginate alone. Subsequently, as the addition of modified xanthan increased, the apparent viscosity at low shear rates increased gradually, and the mixed printing pastes gained increasingly pronounced shear-thinning features. In addition, the mixed printing pastes with more sodium alginate exhibited mainly viscous behaviour under strain, and the liquid-like features became increasingly weak with the addition of modified xanthan. On the other hand, the mixed printing pastes with more modified xanthan exhibited mainly elastic behaviour within the linear viscoelastic region, and the solid-like features became increasingly marked with the addition of modified xanthan. Mixtures of sodium alginate and modified xanthan can be used as thickeners in the reactive printing of cotton, producing a good colour yield, levelness, and outline sharpness. In particular, for large patterns, the mixed printing paste performed best when the ratio of sodium alginate to modified xanthan was 80:20; for fine patterns, it performed best when the ratio of sodium alginate to modified xanthan was 20:80.
