Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The thermo-optical behavior of immiscible PS/PC blends filled with silica nanoparticles was studied in order to get some information upon the location of nanoparticles in the polymer blend phases and interface using optical microscopy. The systems were designed taking into account rheological and optical requirements, having droplet-matrix morphology, with particle size in the range of the visible light wavelength. The melt blending procedure helped to set the nanoparticles at specific locations including within the PC minor phase, PS matrix phase and PS/PC interphase, which was confirmed via transmission electron microscopy. The light scattering was measured via the normalized transmitted light intensity over temperature, encompassing the Tg of the two polymers. The PS/PC blends showed an increase in the light scattering as compared to the pure polymers, which is magnified upon increasing the PC content. The addition of the nanosilica forming PS/PC/Nanosilica systems greatly reduces the light scattering, particularly above the Tg of the PS phase. The use of hydrophilic nanosilica does not show any appreciable hysteresis upon comparing data from heating and cooling cycles. This type of silica stays mainly trapped within the PC dispersed phase, little interfering with the light scattering, which happens at the polymer-polymer interface. On the other hand, the use of hydrophobic nanosilica does show a clear hysteresis. The hydrophobic silica located at the PS/PC interphase, interfere with the light scattering intensity at this interface, and can be used to identify its presence. The proposed procedure can help control the mixing process, thus improving the effective action of the nanoparticles in the final properties of polymer systems.
Polymères -- BiodégradationIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Biodegradable PCL/PLA/Ag-MMT nanoblends with a strong antibacterial activity and a silver ion release property were successfully prepared by melt blending process for active packaging use. The presence of silver exchanged montmorillonite and its interaction with PCL/PLA matrix was evidenced by ATR/FTIR. The morphology was investigated by both XRD and TEM analyses. It was suggested the formation of mainly exfoliated structures with a random dispersion of spherical silver nanoparticles within their composite matrices. The thermal and mechanical properties of these nanomaterials were thoroughly investigated and compared to those of the unfilled blends. The potential of the silver ion release from the PCL/PLA/Ag-MMT film was estimated after immersion in water for several periods of time. The results showed an increase of the amount of silver ions released with growing immersion time of PCL/PLA/Ag-MMT nanoblends. Due to the presence of silver nanoparticles in their matrices, PCL/PLA/Ag-MMT nanoblends showed a total bacteria growth inhibition. ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Styrenic copolymers comprising styrene, methyl methacrylate, and maleic anhydride were developed to improve the heat-resistance property of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The optical, thermal, and mechanical properties were examined for the blend specimens prepared by an injection-molding machine using melt-mixed samples. It was found that the copolymers, which were miscible with PMMA, increase the glass transition temperature and therefore the Vicat Softening temperature. Furthermore, the blends were completely transparent as similar to PMMA. Note de contenu : - Materials

Matières plastiques -- ExtrusionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : An intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder is widely used for producing polymer composites. In order to satisfy properties of the composites, it is important to understand mixing performance of segments. In this study, we discussed mixing performance of special rotor segments commercially named VCMT (various clearance mixing technology) by using a numerical analysis method. The several tip clearances of VCMT work for achievement of both self-cleaning and effective mixing. We adopted a particle tracking method to obtain the following two evaluation indices; 1) residence time for the evaluation of its uniformity and 2) maximum 1st principal stress for the evaluation of dispersive mixing. And we evaluated mixing performance of VCMT by using probability distributions of each index. Moreover, we proposed weighted probability distributions as theoretically better evaluation. The probability distributions of VCMT were compared with those of two kinds of kneading disk segments (KDs). From the comparison, it was found that the probability of VCMT in large 1st principal stress region is higher than those of KDs. As a conclusion, VCMT has better mixing performance than KDs for the geometries and operating conditions that were investigated.
