Revêtements -- Additifs:Peinture -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The authors explain why the drive to reduce VOC content of formulations and the need to increase loads while reducing resin levels is necessitating the development of improved dispersants.
The combination of the constant drive to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) content of formulations and the need to increase pigments loads while reducing resin levels in pigment concentrates, is necessitating the development of improved dispersants. A great deal of effort has centred on new polymeric dispersants with novel polymer architecture and composition of both the pigment anchoring groups and the stabilising moieties.
Traditionally, free radical polymerisation (FRP) has been used to polymerise functional monomers which are required to make good pigment dispersants. FRP is robust with tolerance towards many impurities such as oxygen and heteroatoms.
However, FRP has limitations arising from non-selectivity, i.e. little control over polymer topology or architecture and limited control over molecular weight. It has beenf ound that block copolymers are generally more efficient dispersants than their random copolymer analogues, therefore, new polymerisation techniques are being investigated to develop a new range of dispersants to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of modern pigment dispersants.
Transition metal mediated living radical polymerisation (TMM-LR°) also known as atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) allows a level of control un paralleled in polymer synthesis enabling the formation f well-defined polymer structures including block, grafs and hyperbranched copolymers as well as controlling alpha therminal functionality. Unlike many other living polymerisation techniques TMM-LRP is robust and tolerant to most impurities with the exception of acids. This makes the technology applicable to a wide range of monomers inlcuding, but no limited to, alkyl methacrylate, diethylaminoethylmethacrylate, PEG methacrylate, glycerol methacrylate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, protected acid functional methacrylates and many styrenics.Note de contenu : - polymerisation technology

Recent research expands its utility for formulation in hair care and men's grooming products. The new material is based on a mixture of high molecular weight branched silicone polymer in a dimethicone carrier. It has a novel, string-like texture that can be adapted to a wide range of formulation types and used with common personal care ingredients, and it is suitable for cold processing. Its unusual texture, formulation flexibility and display of recognized silicone properties suggests broad potential for use in products designed for consumers who look for products with distinctive and multifunctional benefits. ThermocinétiqueIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The design of a polymer composite actuator is essential for micro and nano applications. Thus, the composite material may deform or deflects as specific stimuli are applied, such as heat, electrical, light source, etc. The deformation of the composite material is caused by the type of stimulus applied. Hence, while it is heated, the expansion takes place quickly, and the heating is shut down, the material shrinks very slowly. In the present investigation, this phenomenon is mainly studied in the actuation of composite beams. Numerical analysis of carbon black filled polymer composite beam expansion, and contraction is being analyzed in this research. The structure of the beam has been created, and the composite properties are incorporated into the beam, and the uniform heat source is applied on to the surface of the beam. The heating and cooling of the composite material predict the increase and decrease in the temperature of the beam. The numerical analysis of the temperature-dependent expansion and contraction of the composite beam has been carried out successfully. An increase in temperature is observed to signify the slight expansion in the composite beam, whereas the contraction of the composite beam takes a longer time to reach room temperature. Also, the increase in the content of the filler leads to a decrease in the expansion of the composite beam. The numerical simulation of the polymer composite thus provides a solid platform for the experimental study of thermal actuators. Note de contenu : - Basic concepts

The effect of the viscosity of ViPDMSVi, the active hydrogen content of PMHS, the molar ratio of vinyl groups to active hydrogen, the dosage of ViPMVSVi and fumed silica on the performance of PDMS polymer coating, including mechanical properties, cold resistance, flexural resistance, abrasion resistance, hydrophobic and anti-fouling properties were investigated. The results show that ViPDMSVi with high vinyl content and PMHS with low active hydrogen content is more conducive to obtaining organosilicon coating with better mechanical properties, the optimized dosage of ViPMVSVi and fumed silica was 7 wt% and 40 wt%, respectively. In this case, the tensile strength and the broken elongation of the PDMS polymer coating reached 5.96 MPa and 481%, showing reasonable mechanical properties for leather coating. Compared with polyurethane based or polyvinyl chloride based synthetic leather, the silicon based synthetic leather prepared by this method exhibits excellent cold resistance, abrasion resistance, super hydrophobicity, and anti-fouling characteristics. Silicones -- Emploi en cosmétologieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Despite the increasing usage of silicone polymers in personal care products, the selection of the proper polymer for a particular application remains somewhat elusive. This directly results in inefficiency of formula development. This problem is exacerbated by the reliance upon INCI names in selection of compounds. While helpful in placing polymers in a generic class, it is of limited help in optimising formulation efficiency. Compounds that are water insoluble, water dispersible or water insoluble can all share a common INCI name. Likewise polymers that provide wetting, emulsification, or conditioning can share a common INCI name. This article is intended to clarify selection of products for formulation.
