Titre : Genuine or not - it's here to stay Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Buirski, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 89-93 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Cuir synthétique Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Until the relatively recent past, shoe, glove and sporting goods manufacturers had a simple option - use leather or find something else which would not meet the performance, hand and longevity of beautifully finished hides and skins. Then came "man-made leather", but the real thing was still instantly recognisable to the consumer. The fake was obvious. Then came microfibres, the microscopic analysis of the hide structure itself and the technology to create near-clones of leather out of textiles. It's a new ball game now.. Surfaces -- NettoyageIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study reports on the deposition of a hydrophobic coating on polyurethane (PU)-based synthetic leather through a plasma polymerization method and investigates the hydrophobic behavior of the plasma-coated substrate. The silicon compound of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), inactive gas argon (Ar), and toluene were used to impart surface hydrophobicity to a PU-based substrate. Surface hydrophobicity was analyzed by water contact angle measurements. Surface hydrophobicity was increased by deposition of compositions of 100% HMDSO, 3:1 HMDSO/toluene, and 1:1 HMDSO/toluene. Optimum conditions of 40 W, 30 s plasma treatment resulted in essentially the same initial contact angle results of approximately 100° for all three treatment compositions. The initial water contact angle for untreated material was about 73°. A water droplet took 1800 s to spread out on the plasma-treated sample after it had been placed on the sample surface. An increase in plasma power also led to a decrease in contact angle, which may be attributed to oxidization of HMDSO during plasma deposition. XPS analysis showed that plasma polymerization of HMDSO/toluene compositions led to a significant increase in atomic percentage of Si compound responsible for the hydrophobic surface. The easy clean results for the treated and untreated PU-based synthetic leather samples clearly showed that the remaining stain on the plasma-polymerized sample was less than that of untreated sample. The plasma-formed coating was both hydrophobic and formed a physical barrier against water and stain. OxydationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : As part of a sustainable strategy, many proponents have advocated a model that relies on long-lived products that displace short-lived, single-use products. These long-lived products need to be durable and must be able to be easily regenerated in a circular economy. The remanufacture, refmishing or renewal of the products will push their already long lives, even further. Note de contenu : - Degradation mechanisms

Etudes comparativesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This paper details our comparison of the structure of superfine fibre synthetic leather and natural leather cattle hide. The differences between the microfilaments and between the two-layer braiding [interweaving] of synthetic leather and the three-layer braiding [interweaving] of natural leather were observed from the view of microstructure, and studied by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The influence of fibre structure, braiding form and leather’s structure on the physical and chemical properties are discussed. The results showed that synthetic leather simulates the microstructure of natural leather because the superfine fibre is similar to the fineness and structure of the fibril. The natural leather has a stereoscopic structure with the continuously changing degree of fibre crosslinking. The synthetic leather has a three-dimensional structure of superfine fibre non-wovens and microporous polyurethane. The uniform braiding structure of the synthetic leather is its advantage, but it is restricted technically by the lack of a grain layer. Therefore, reducing the fibre fineness, increasing braiding density, number of layers and simulating a grain layer structure are the required direction of development for synthetic leather to better simulate natural leather.
