Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The protective properties of two innovative, experimental nano-composite coatings which are mainly intended for the protection of cultural heritage stone artifacts were compared. The decay of artworks, monuments, and buildings made of stone materials is a natural and irreversible process. In order to protect stone artworks and buildings from natural decay, it is necessary to reduce the penetration of water into porous substrates by applying a highly hydrophobic protective coating on the stone surface. The performances of two nano-composite coatings containing an organo-modified boehmite nano-filler, applied on calcareous stone substrates typical of Apulia region (leccese stone, PL and gentile stone, PG), and activated by UV or sunlight radiations, were compared in order to establish the more suitable product for the specific stone substrate. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hybrid sol–gel coatings are widely used as protective layers for aluminum alloys because of their barrier abilities. This study aims at explaining the barrier properties of a sol–gel coating based on alkyltrimethoxysilane and methacrylate resin by its film structure. This approach was examined by modifying one photopolymerization parameter, e.g., by varying the content of radical photoinitiator. By neutral salt spray test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the barrier properties are highlighted. The film structure is related to thermomechanical properties of films whose glass transition temperature and elastic modulus are measured by dynamic mechanical analysis and nanoindentation, respectively. On a finer scale, conversion of methacrylate functions calculated from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has given information on the chemical structure of films. The morphology of these coatings is studied by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy operating in tapping mode, and X-ray diffraction. Results revealed that formulations containing between 3 and 9 wt% of radical photoinitiator exhibit the maximal conversion of methacrylate functions and, at a microscopic scale, a homogeneous coating where the two organic and inorganic networks are well interpenetrated. This hybrid sol–gel microstructure corresponds to the highest glass transition temperature and the highest mechanical characteristics (elastic modulus, E and hardness, H) and the highest protection performance. This results in the best barrier properties, and thus the highest corrosion resistance. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Film preparation - Methods

Triméthacrylate de glycérolIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Four types of UV-(meth)acrylate curable alkyds were synthesized and formulated with two tri(meth)acrylate reactive diluents. Thermal, mechanical, and coating properties, including gloss, adhesion, hardness, impact resistance, and chemical resistance, were evaluated. In general, methacrylate-based UV-curable alkyd has higher modulus and toughness, whereas acrylate-based UV-curable alkyd has better flexibility and adhesion. In all four UV-curable alkyd resin systems, increasing reactive diluent content will enhance properties like tensile strength and modulus, hardness, and chemical resistance. However, there is a decrease in properties such as elongation at break, adhesion, and impact resistance. Among four UV-curable alkyd resin, acrylated medium linseed oil alkyd exhibited the best overall performance than other systems in terms of hardness, flexibility, and adhesion. Particularly, acrylated medium linseed oil alkyd formulations with 20–30 wt% of glycerol triacrylate as reactive diluent showed the best coating performance. It is possible to produce coating films with a good balance of crosslink density, flexibility, and adhesion using such UV-curable alkyd systems. Further, it has a huge potential in alkyds as an alternative for cobalt-based drier system.

Revêtements -- Additifs:Peinture -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The authors explain why the drive to reduce VOC content of formulations and the need to increase loads while reducing resin levels is necessitating the development of improved dispersants.
The combination of the constant drive to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) content of formulations and the need to increase pigments loads while reducing resin levels in pigment concentrates, is necessitating the development of improved dispersants. A great deal of effort has centred on new polymeric dispersants with novel polymer architecture and composition of both the pigment anchoring groups and the stabilising moieties.
Traditionally, free radical polymerisation (FRP) has been used to polymerise functional monomers which are required to make good pigment dispersants. FRP is robust with tolerance towards many impurities such as oxygen and heteroatoms.
However, FRP has limitations arising from non-selectivity, i.e. little control over polymer topology or architecture and limited control over molecular weight. It has beenf ound that block copolymers are generally more efficient dispersants than their random copolymer analogues, therefore, new polymerisation techniques are being investigated to develop a new range of dispersants to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of modern pigment dispersants.
Transition metal mediated living radical polymerisation (TMM-LR°) also known as atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) allows a level of control un paralleled in polymer synthesis enabling the formation f well-defined polymer structures including block, grafs and hyperbranched copolymers as well as controlling alpha therminal functionality. Unlike many other living polymerisation techniques TMM-LRP is robust and tolerant to most impurities with the exception of acids. This makes the technology applicable to a wide range of monomers inlcuding, but no limited to, alkyl methacrylate, diethylaminoethylmethacrylate, PEG methacrylate, glycerol methacrylate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, protected acid functional methacrylates and many styrenics.Note de contenu : - polymerisation technology
