The author describes how one small step in monomer development is a giant leap for resin suppliers needing cost effective and versatile marterials.
Acrylate and methacrylate monomers are the building blocks for acrylic polymers. With 400+ structures commercially cited, not to mention those specially generated in academia, the choice of unsaturated monomers can often seem bewildering. An alternative view would be to consider the choices and pressures facing the paint and resin chemist, rationalising the list of possible acrylic reagents into a practical formulating toolkit.
The paint and resin chemist needs to be far more aware of external issues relating to coatings development. For example, the impact of environmental legislation has driven coating technologies towards high solids, waterborne, powder and 100% solids systems. Customer power, on the other hand dictates performance and health & safety improvement. Internal cost control requires the use of inventory listed materials in more inventive ways.
The successful chemist needs to be knowledgeable of the available acrylic materials, have a flexible approach to customer demands and adapt the chemistry in order to meet environmental needs. And, it goes without saying that this has to be done cost effectively. |
