Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effect of acrylic polyol composition on the properties of crosslinked siloxane-polyurethane coatings was explored. An acrylic polyol library was synthesized using batch solution polymerization and characterized using high-throughput gel permeation chromatography (Rapid-GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Siloxane-polyurethane coatings were prepared from 3-aminopropyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), the acrylic polyols and a polyisocyanate crosslinker. The siloxane-acrylicpolyurethane coatings were tested for mechanical and physical properties. The siloxane-polyurethane coatings had a systematic variation in glass transition temperature and had water contact angles ranging from 95° to 100°. Many of the coatings also showed a low-force of release in the pseudo-barnacle pull-off adhesion test. Performance testing of the fouling-release properties of the siloxane-polyurethane coatings on array panels with algae, namely the diatom Navicula and sporelings (young plants) of the green seaweed Ulva was also conducted. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Latex paints formulated with two typical commercial acrylic dispersion binders - one a pure acrylic (Ak), the other an acrylic/styrene (Ak/S) were investigated. This included determination of the films mechanical properties, colour change (when subjected to artificial weathering), resistance to water and water-vapour transmission rates. Our investigations revealed there to be little difference between the two types of polymer in the 15-55% Pigment Volume Concentration (PVC) range. As earlier work showed, an optimum PVC and the right combination of pigment and extender are more important than the type of binder. Note de contenu : - Investigation of two typical commercial acrylic dispersion binders
- Test methods and mechanical testing (tensile strength/elongation at break) on the films
- Testing discoloration
- Interaction between the pigment and binder depends on the amount of absorbed water
- The water absorption drops with the number of wash/dry cycles
- Water-vapour transmission rate decrease with PVC
- Two opposing effects influence tensile properties
- Water toughens and improves the extensibility of Ak/S paint films more than Ak paint films
- Pure acrylic paints exhibit superior light stability than acrylic/styrene ones
- Practically no yellowing

Futhermore, good dirt pickup resistance, colour maintenance, low chalking and good elasticity of the coating are required a long-pasting paint. All these properties of the coating are influenced by the choice of the binder. By copolymerising different monomers, it is possible ti vary the properties of the binders over an extremely wide range. Note de contenu : - ACRYLIC COPOLYMER DISPERSIONS

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In order to provide adequate fire resistance to construction materials, such as steel and wood, the use of high and low molecular weight tannins (TMw-H and TMw-L), extracted from the bark of Pinus radiata, as carbonaceous agents, was studied. The extracts were fully characterized by GPC, HPLC, and UV to determine the total amount of phenols, percentage of the monomers, and total yield. The molecular weights of both extracts varied between 2986 and 5573 Da, and they were mainly composed of catechin and taxifolin. Eco-friendly water-based formulations were obtained, without producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), by varying the extract content between 15.5 and 37.8% w/w. The coatings, varying in thickness and substrates, were evaluated for their film-forming properties, covering power, mechanical properties, such as adhesion, embossing, abrasion, and flexibility, as well as their resistance to fire. The results indicated that good mechanical properties were obtained when using coatings containing TMw-L compared with those obtained when using TMw-H. The carbonization index (28%) and the mass loss percentage (9.35%) of the coatings containing TMw-L compared well to commercial coatings, indicating that they have excellent fire-retardant properties. However, the behavior of the TMw-H containing coatings was rather intumescent.

The processes involved in the synthesis are: 1. Lipase catalysed interesterification of castor oil and linseed oil at near ambient temperature to form an interesterification product 2. Esterification with phthalic anhydride. The article also describes the comparison of coating properties of the newly synthesised alkyd resins with those prepared by the conventional method. The various coating properties determined were hardness, adhesion, impact resistance, storage stability, chemical resistance and colour. Overall, chemoenzymatically synthesised alkyd resins showed better coating properties than the commercially available alkyd resins.
