The system selected for this work was a two-pack polyurethane acrylate with polyester polyol as the main component and urethane monoacrylate (UMA) as hardener. The polyester polyol was synthesized in a way to provide a final film coating containing both a suitable flexibility and high surface hardness. The thermal and photochemical curing behavior of the resin was studied via the chemorheology technique and the real-time FTIR. The Boltzmann sigmoidal model was implemented and well-fitted to the data obtained from the chemorheology measurements. The comparison between two reactive diluents, butanediol diacrylate (BDDA) and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) showed that BDDA reacts faster than TMPTA in the thermal curing condition. Nevertheless, the network buildup is stronger when TMPTA is used. The photopolymerization is also faster for the case of TMPTA. However, its final double bond conversion is restricted to a lower amount due to steric hindrance and higher viscosity of the system.

Three groups of hybrid sol–gel-coated samples were prepared using various organosilanes and transition metal oxides. The characterization of the materials revealed that the presence of the organic functionalities, especially the methacrylate group, has a noticeable effect on the mechanical response of the hybrid coatings, in particular their flexibility. The presence of methacrylate group in the cured material gives it ability to flex which influenced the thermal fatigue characteristics of the coatings which are able to withstand the cyclic temperature regimes of 82 ± 3 to −37 ± 3°C over 25 2 h cycles. This capability to maintain substrate protection is reflected in the corrosion resistance of the coatings as measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and accelerated exposure testing. This result is important, as it shows that hybrid sol–gel materials can be used in applications where protecting a metal or ally substrate is paramount, especially in thermally volatile environments.

Triméthacrylate de glycérolIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Four types of UV-(meth)acrylate curable alkyds were synthesized and formulated with two tri(meth)acrylate reactive diluents. Thermal, mechanical, and coating properties, including gloss, adhesion, hardness, impact resistance, and chemical resistance, were evaluated. In general, methacrylate-based UV-curable alkyd has higher modulus and toughness, whereas acrylate-based UV-curable alkyd has better flexibility and adhesion. In all four UV-curable alkyd resin systems, increasing reactive diluent content will enhance properties like tensile strength and modulus, hardness, and chemical resistance. However, there is a decrease in properties such as elongation at break, adhesion, and impact resistance. Among four UV-curable alkyd resin, acrylated medium linseed oil alkyd exhibited the best overall performance than other systems in terms of hardness, flexibility, and adhesion. Particularly, acrylated medium linseed oil alkyd formulations with 20–30 wt% of glycerol triacrylate as reactive diluent showed the best coating performance. It is possible to produce coating films with a good balance of crosslink density, flexibility, and adhesion using such UV-curable alkyd systems. Further, it has a huge potential in alkyds as an alternative for cobalt-based drier system.

The present study describes an attempt to induce the inherent flame retardancy to the epoxy resin by incorporation of phosphorous and boron atoms in the polymer backbone through the curing agents. Phosphorous (PPc)- and boron (BPc)-containing precursors were synthesized and incorporated into the commercial epoxy and hardener system with different molar ratios. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed using hydroxyl value, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The thermal, physical, and mechanical properties of the cured films were performed using different testing methods. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry results showed the overall increased thermal stability and char yield along with the glass transition temperatures (Tg) due to the incorporation of newly synthesized phosphorus- and boron-containing compounds in the coating films. The mechanical properties and solvent resistance of the cured films were excellent. The flame-retardant properties of the cured films were increased with the incorporation of PPc and BPc. The highest limiting oxygen index was obtained for the formulation with equal amounts of PPc and BPc as 29 while UL-94 showed the self-extinguishing behavior within 10 s after ignition.
