Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hardness and toughness are typically contradictive for sol–gel-derived coatings. In this article, thick (~15 μm) silicon-oxo-dominated nanocomposite coatings with high transparency were fabricated by incorporating 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS)-modified silica alcosol into a moisture-curable polysiloxane oligomer and curing with the aid of 3-aminopropyltriehtoxysilane (APS). Effects of MPS-to-SiO2 molar ratio, SiO2 nanoparticle content, APS dosage, and curing process on the mechanical properties were thoroughly investigated using a pencil hardness tester, a flexibility tester, and a nanoindentation tester. The best properties were achieved by a coating with an MPS-to-SiO2 molar ratio of 0.1:1, a silica nanoparticle content of 10 wt%, and an APS dosage of 30 wt%. This coating demonstrated enhanced hardness (pencil hardness = 7H and microhardness = 626 MPa) and toughness (excellent flexibility of 5 mm in the mandrel bend test). Additional curing via aza-Michael addition between amino groups from APS and C=C groups from the polysiloxane oligomer can be accomplished at elevated temperatures. This enables further mechanical enhancement, namely hardness (9H and 1087 MPa), with adequate flexibility (10 mm). Such properties are superior to those reported for other sol–gel-derived silicon-oxo coatings produced at low drying temperatures. Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Phosphorus-containing liquid epoxidate polybutadiene (PDCP-LEPB) is synthesized and used as a reactive additive to improve the water, wear and fire resistance of UV-curable acrylate coatings containing nano-SiO2 as a filler. The structure of PDCP-LEPB and the curing condition are confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The addition of PDCP-LEPB should be controlled at around 10% as shown by thermal stability measurements; with the addition of PDCP-LEPB, composites show earlier degradation to release flame-retardant components, and thus the fire resistance of plywood is improved when its surface is applied by the composite coatings containing PDCP-LEPB. Besides, the fire protecting ability can be greatly enhanced with SiO2 addition due to the synergistic effect of P, Si and Cl coexistence in the matrix. The addition of PDCP-LEPB improves the water resistance of plywood as reflected by the water absorption rates, contact angle measurements and stain resistance test due to the hydrophobic nature of olefin backbone and increment of crosslinking density; the addition of nano-SiO2 has a much more positive effect on the improvement in their stain resistance and wear resistance due to the increase in surface roughness and stiffness, respectively. ThiolsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : New strategies for synthesizing click chemical reactions have been studied and widely used in the synthesis of functional polymers. In this paper, based on thiol-click chemistry, thiocarbamate bonds and thioether bonds were introduced into the polymer skeleton, and then pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PETTA) was introduced into the system to form an interpenetrating network structure (IPN). A new type of waterborne poly(thiourethane-urethane) acrylate (WPTUA) coating with strong toughness, high hardness, and rapid curing was obtained. Under the condition of an organotin catalyst, a WPTUA composite dispersion was prepared by using isophorone diisocyanate and polycarbonate diol as monomers, 2-dimethylol propionic acid as a hydrophilic chain extender, trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (TMPMP) and PETTA. The molecular structures of intermediate waterborne poly(thiourethane-urethane) (WPTU), WPTUA oligomers and UV-cured polymers were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of the content of TMPMP and PETTA on the properties of WPTUA, including dispersion stability, thermal properties, mechanical properties, water resistance, hardness, and toughness, were investigated. It is found that when the WPTUA dispersion has 16 wt% TMPMP and 28 wt% PETTA, the prepared films have high hardness, significant water resistance and good thermal stability for coating applications on delicate substrates, such as paper, plastic and wood.
Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Here, waterborne coatings with enhanced physico-mechanical properties were prepared by incorporation of modified silica nanoparticles into an acrylic matrix through miniemulsion polymerization. In order to circumvent the inherent incompatibility of organic and inorganic portions, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate molecules were chemically coupled to the surface of silica nanoparticles to alter the hydrophilic nature of inorganic nanoparticles to hydrophobic ones. Also, for investigating the effect of the exploited surface modification process, unmodified silica nanoparticles were used in preparing acrylic latex via miniemulsion polymerization. The optical and physico-mechanical properties of the acrylic–silica nanocomposite films with 0–10 wt% of unmodified and modified SiO2 were characterized by measuring their surface roughness, haziness, gloss values, UV–Vis transmittance, scratch resistance, tensile, and pendulum hardness. It was found that by using modified SiO2 nanoparticles, due to their better dispersion state and ability for establishing covalent linkage with acrylic polymer chains, it is possible to obtain nanocomposite coatings with improved physico-mechanical properties, high transparency in Vis region, considerable UV adsorption, and comparable surface roughness, glossiness, and haziness with pure acrylic film. However, unmodified silica nanoparticles formed many aggregates in the polymer matrix which deteriorated optical and different physico-mechanical properties of acrylic latex. It was found that the greatest improvement in properties is achieved by incorporation of 7 wt% modified silica nanoparticles in acrylic polymer. The results showed that increasing the weight ratio of HEA/BA led to a decrease in the average particle sizes and a narrowing in the particle size distribution, but an increase in the viscosity of their emulsions. Meanwhile, their films showed increased thermal resistance, adhesion on substrate, tensile strength, and hardness, but decreased water resistance and enhanced wettability. When the emulsions were applied in two-component coatings, their water resistance was greatly improved and the wettability was reduced; in addition, their glass transition temperature, thermal stability, adhesion on substrate, tensile strength, and hardness were further increased. It was suggested that hydroxyl groups of PUA can not only engage in the intramolecular and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonding, but also form covalently crosslinked networks with polyisocyanate in their films.
