From EIS and corrosion potential data analysis it was found that (1) there is not a significant influence of the tannin pretreatment on the anticorrosive protection level, which depends particularly on the barrier effect afforded by the applied paint system (however, as the corrosion process starts, tannins may cause the repassivation of steel); (2) the enhancement of the protection level afforded by the tannin primer was restricted to short immersion periods and corrosive media that were not very aggressive; and (3) water uptake was not significantly affected by the presence of the tannin primer. Treated steel panels coated with different paint systems were subjected to standardized (salt spray, humidity chamber, adhesion, and flexibility) and electrochemical (corrosion potential, EIS) tests. Electrochemical tests were performed by employing only panels coated with the wash primer to determine its protective effect. The binder employed in this research was prepared in the laboratory by emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers. It was found that the tested formulation protected steel against corrosion by forming ferric tannate, which prevented oxide formation. After performing the salt spray tests, it was observed that no oxide spots developed on the scratch mark although some blisters were detected. The good stability of the binder in low pH media (pH: 2.0-2.5) and the binder/substrate interaction are decisive factors in the performance of this aqueous pretreatment system. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The purpose of this investigation was focused on reducing the content of zinc phosphate in anticorrosive paints by means of the incorporation of low quantities of selected soluble corrosion inhibitors. The article describes the anticorrosive behavior of alkyd paints containing reduced levels of zinc phosphate, zinc oxide, and some soluble compounds used as additives (e.g., sodium polyphosphate, sodium phosphate, and sodium benzoate). Anticorrosive solventborne alkyd paints were formulated with a zinc phosphate content of 10% by volume (v/v) with respect to the total pigment concentration. In all cases, the PVC/CPVC (pigment volume concentration/critical pigment volume concentration) ratio was 0.8. Experimental paints, applied on sandblasted SAE 1010 panels, were evaluated by accelerated tests (salt spray cabinet) and electrochemical measurements (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS). The results show that the additions of small amounts of soluble corrosion inhibitors to low content zinc phosphate paint formulations enhance their performance in a very remarkable way. Perhaps, the most outstanding feature is that the employment of soluble additives allowed the reduction of the zinc phosphate content with concomitant savings. Transfert de masseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The influence of the chloride concentration on the mass transport through unpigmented and non plasticized chlorinated rubber films applied on steel was studied using the potentiostatic oxygen reduction as the test reaction. Besides DC electrochemical measurements, visual assessment was also used in order to assess the coated steel deterioration with immersion time. From the experimental results it may be concluded that these varnishes applied in very thin films gave a good anticorrosive protection level, which was attributed to both, the coating permselectivity and its strong adhesion to the steel substrate. Because these compounds are carcinogenic and toxic, eco-friendly systems capable of replacing them are being evaluated. In this work, the corrosion behavior in 0.5 M NaCl solution of zinc coatings deposited from a free-cyanide alkaline bath and treated with Cr3+ based passivation coatings were characterized through DC and EIS techniques. The salt spray test as well as studies of the surface structure and chemical composition were also performed. From these analyses it was inferred that (1) the green-colored Cr3+ passivated coatings provide better corrosion resistance than the yellow- and blue-colored coatings, and (2) together with an adequate painting system, they could be a less polluting and less toxic alternative to traditional chromate coatings.
