ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Rheology is a critical performance parameter for the majority of modern-day coatings. In the past, the coatings industry relied upon simple, low cost apparatus in order to give a single point measurement of a sample (eg flow cups for paints, falling bar viscometers for inks). For simple formulations and some QC tests, this approach sufficed, and often had to, because more refines instrumentation was simply too expensive for many companies. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : To develop charge/matrix interactions and improve the rheological, mechanical, and morphological performances of the matrix polypropylene, PP/kaolinite composites were prepared using the melt intercalation method at 190 °C. The rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene/kaolin composites have been evaluated at various concentrations of untreated and/or treated kaolin. It was shown that the melt flow index (MFI) varies visibly but slightly compared to that of the matrix with increasing kaolin content. Furthermore, when the kaolin loading is enhanced, the apparent shear viscosity (ηapp) of the composites increases compared to the matrix and decreases with the increase in the shear rate (γapp). Also, while the shear stress (τapp) is reduced, the flow curve shifts upwards with increasing the kaolin concentration. The systems obeyed the power-law model in shear stress-shear rate variations and were shear thinning as power-law index (n) values increased with kaolin content. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the obtained composites were significantly affected by the dispersion of the filler into the matrix and by the weak interactions at the interface PP/kaolinite. SEM micrographs show a poor dispersion of the nanoclay within the polypropylene matrix and the formation of agglomerates with different sizes. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Disc extruders have been employed for blending, mixing, dispersing, coloring, homogenizing, degassing, and granulating of polymers. One of the difficulties in the design of disc extruders is the evaluation of dynamic characteristics such as required power, momentum transfer rate, and applied torque, which indeed indicates the capability of the machine and its components. In this paper the required conditions and model for developing of elastic deformation of polymers in the disc extruders are studied. By rheological modeling of disc extruders and related elements, dynamic behavior of this processing system which highly depends on elastic properties of polymeric materials is obtained. These data are necessary for a proper design the system, and more accurate calculation its moving parts. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The rheological modeling of a polymer melt in the course of its extrusion through a circular cylindrical channel inside a shaping die equipped with a rotating mandrel and a rotating or stationary nozzle is investigated. This paper attempts to provide a detailed rheological description of the physical processes of a polymer melt based on Leonov model inside the channel of an extruder under its kinematic deformation upon two-dimensional shear flow. Based on the obtained rheological equations of state, the flow process can be described in a form of dependencies reflecting kinematics of complex polymer deformation in the die channel. These expressions allow estimation of the velocity distribution for the flow elements within the channel as well as of the flow-pressure characteristics of the process. A quantitative relation between flow characteristics, rheological properties of polymer, and technical parameters of the channel of an extruder was determined. Comparison of this theoretical model with experimental results validates the suggested model.
