To evaluate the fouling-release performance and explore the mechanism of the coating, artificial and real-sea environment tests were carried out in the experiments, respectively. IR and 1H NMR were utilized to characterize the structure of the polymer. The effect of fouling-release agent was explored by considering changes in the parameters of surface contact angle, XPS, elastic modulus, and TEM. Results of real-sea tests show that the new amphiphilic fouling-release coating has a very good antifouling performance and can be re-cleaned after 6 months of testing in the real-sea environment. These can be explained through hydrophilic PEG migrating to the surface to form a comb-type structure which reduces the adhesion strength of fouling organisms that can then be self-cleaned by flow from the surface of coatings. However, the development of new hydrophobic coatings holds the promise of extending the usable life of structures in marine environments. In this work, we quantify the barrier properties and corrosion resistance of two novel highly hydrophobic polysiloxane formulations and the legacy silicone alkyd topcoat used on the topside of Navy’s ships, all with haze gray pigmentation. Based on FTIR-ATR and EIS measurements of the pristine coatings, both the single- (1K) and the two-component (2K) polysiloxane provide significantly improved barrier characteristics (lower water diffusion coefficient and capacitance) than the silicone alkyd. These results were confirmed through a 3-month-long immersion corrosion test, which also showed that the 1K and 2K polysiloxane coatings had comparable degradation characteristic and remained highly hydrophobic. At first, the modified PDMS was synthesized to react with acrylate monomers and participate in free radical polymerization. Then, the modified PDMS was blended with acrylate monomers, and the acrylate-PDMS composite latexes with different formulas were obtained by emulsion polymerization. Because the blending monomers were constrained in the micelle, the two components were interconnected with each other by a covalent bond and the phase compatibility between the two components could be controlled well. Chemical constitution and the morphology of acrylate-PDMS composite latexes were confirmed by using FTIR spectroscopy, TEM, and SEM measurements, respectively. Thermophysics and heat resistance of the dried coatings based on acrylate-PDMS composite latexes were studied using DSC and TGA tests, respectively. Anticorrosion properties of the cured coatings based on acrylate-PDMS composite latexes were confirmed by potentiodynamic polarization test. With low surface tension, good toughness, excellent weather-proof properties, and good high and low temperature stability, the modified PDMS component can improve the performance of the traditional acrylate latex-based waterborne resin effectively, and the prepared acrylate-PDMS composite latexes can be used in heavy-duty anticorrosion applications. This paper focuses on effects of modifying veneer with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles on the performance of a waterborne coating and formaldehyde emission. Commercial waterborne varnish was used to apply a surface finish on the modified veneered panels. Changes caused by TiO2 nanoparticle treatment that could affect the finishing performance were measured. The results showed slight increases in the weight and contact angle of the veneers treated with TiO2 nanoparticles, whereas the modified veneered panels after surface finishing presented improved hardness at high nanoparticle loadings. Modification of the veneers by nanoparticles had a minor negative influence on the coating glossiness and adhesion due to a blocking effect between the coating film and the modified veneers. Formaldehyde emissions were considerably reduced due to degradation by the TiO2 particles under UV-light irritation.

RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The hybrid cyclic isocyanate trimer with appropriate functionality and good solvent tolerance which can be used as a building block to construct polyurethane (PU) coatings was prepared by cyclo-oligomerization of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). Among all the tested catalysts, the self-made catalyst 3-(trimethylammonio)propyl carbonate (Cat. 4) was found to possess enough catalytic efficiency to confirm the NCO conversion to reach about 50% with both high (1 wt%) and low (0.25 wt%) catalyst loading at low temperature (40°C). The IR and NMR results proved the formation of a hybrid trimer, while HPLC results showed hybrid TDI/HDI trimer predominated in the product and only trace amounts of TDI monomer (<0.5 wt%) and oligomer with higher degree of polymerization (DP) remained. Furthermore, the formed hybrid oligomer exhibited excellent solvent tolerance to benzene, chlorinated, and acetate solvents. Consequently, Cat. 4 was demonstrated to be a suitable catalyst for cyclo-oligomerization since it not only possessed enough catalytic efficiency at low temperature but also hardly resulted in higher DP oligomer. Furthermore, the curing process with PTHF-r-PEO polyol was conducted as a pilot experiment to form PU coatings at room temperature. The disappearance of NCO group in IR spectrum as well as higher storage modulus against loss modulus implied the successful curing process. The strain–stress test showed the high tensile strength of formed PU coating, whereas the rheological test and dynamic mechanical analyzer proved the formed PU coating was a typical elastic material with good crosslink structure. These results indicate the promising potential of formed PU made from hybrid TDI/HDI trimer for coating applications. Verre -- RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Superhydrophobic coatings have opened new vistas in the field of self-cleaning surfaces by having improved performance, robustness and preservation of cleaning agents including water. Presently, fluoropolymers are extensively explored and used for this purpose. However, the major drawback accompanying fluoropolymers is formation of environmentally persistent and toxic compounds, viz. PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) on their degradation raising concern on their use. In the present study, an effort has been made to develop a facile process by using an environmentally safe material. A simple dip coating technique is reported to fabricate superhydrophobic surface. SiO2 nanoparticles of size 25–30 nm, prepared by sol–gel route, were dip-coated on glass substrate in multilayers followed by coating of a surfactant to achieve homogeneity of SiO2 layers and enhanced binding with subsequent layer of NUVA-2114 [a commercially used fluorotelomer with chemical composition C2F6(CF2CF2)nX]. It was observed that SiO2 nanoparticles and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant exhibit a synergistic effect on interface stability at optimized SDS concentration. A water contact angle of 152° is achieved. The established method is simple, scalable, environmentally safe and cost-effective. ThermodynamiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wetting behaviors on a hydrophobic nanopatterned surface, which are of primary consideration in the design of superhydrophobic surfaces, are studied on an analytic model that shows the hole-patterned substrate is more favorable for water droplets to nucleate on the inside of holes based on nucleation theory. After droplet nucleation, the transition from Wenzel state to Cassie–Baxter state may occur during the growth stage. The calculation of the free energy of droplets during the growth stage indicates that the wetting transitions depend on the volume of the droplets, and Wenzel state or Cassie–Baxter state depends on the absolute size and relative size of the geometrical morphology of the nanoholes. PolyanilineIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this paper, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was first proposed for the pioneer application of anticorrosion coatings. Original g-C3N4 was facilely treated using HNO3 and the exfoliated g-C3N4 sheets (E-g-C3N4) were fabricated, and then, polyaniline/E-g-C3N4 composites (PANI/E-g-C3N4) as novel anticorrosive media were synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization and devoted to the corrosion protection of coatings. The E-g-C3N4 sheets and PANI/E-g-C3N4 composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The anticorrosion properties of the samples prepared were investigated by electrochemical measurements including Tafel plots, electrochemical impedance spectra, and open-circuit potential. Accelerated corrosion tests of iron panels coated by PANI/E-g-C3N4 were performed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Anticorrosive mechanism of PANI/E-g-C3N4 was discussed in detail. PANI/E-g-C3N4-3 fillers possessed superior corrosion inhibition than individual components on iron coatings, which was due to the synergetic effect of anticorrosion between E-g-C3N4 and PANI. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We first prepared an unsaturated epoxy resin ester (EM) by addition–esterification reaction with acrylic acid and then synthesized a series of acrylic ester/epoxy hybrid latexes (AE) with core–shell structure by semicontinuous emulsion polymerization method. The resultant AE emulsions are utilized as anticorrosion coatings of metals. The influences of EM content and crosslinking agent (PEG(400)DA) content on the physicochemical properties of the resultant emulsions and anticorrosion coatings of metals are investigated in detail. The AE emulsion displays better anticorrosion properties when it is prepared under the following conditions: the EM content of 30 wt% and PEG(400)DA content of 2.0 wt%. The relationships between the AE structure and anticorrosion properties of AE coatings are clearly illustrated. The corrosion resistances of AE coatings are not only depend on the crosslinking density, hydrophilic, and polarity among the AE chains, but also rely on the stability of the emulsion and the integrality and homogeneity of the coatings. The chemical structure and performances of BGPIs were fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, solubility test, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. It was determined that the prepared BGPIs were in the amorphous phase and readily soluble in conventional aprotic polar solvents. Additionally, the properties of as-prepared UV-cured coatings based on BGPIs were also evaluated by real-time Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and so on. Results revealed that all coatings exhibited satisfactory curing, higher adhesion, lower water uptakes, outstanding optical transparency, and fairly favorable thermal stability under a high content of biomass up to 48.9%. Therefore, these bio-based polymers could be considered as a potential sustainable candidate for high-temperature UV-curable coatings in the microelectronic field. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : ZnO–TiO2, SiO2–TiO2, and SiO2–TiO2–ZnO hybrid nanocomposite coatings were synthesized based on sol–gel precursors including tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), tetra(n-butyl orthotitanate) (TBT), and zinc acetate dihydrate. The hybrid network was characterized by FTIR, FESEM, and EDAX techniques. Results indicated that inorganic particles’ size was of nanoorder (20–30 nm), with very uniform distribution and dispersion. Photocatalytic and self-cleaning activities of these coatings were further investigated by degradation of methylene blue in an aqueous solution (20 ppm) at visible light irradiation, indicating photocatalytic performance of the coatings containing ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles. The antibacterial effect of the coatings was investigated for inhibition and inactivation of cell growth, with the results showing the same antibacterial activity for ZnO–TiO2 and SiO2–TiO2–ZnO coatings against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus; the activity was, however, higher than that of SiO2–TiO2 hybrid nanocomposite coatings. The oxygen permeability was measured at different humidity levels, and the material properties were characterized under the same conditions: polymer crystallinity, kaolin concentration, and kaolin orientation were all evaluated. The experimental results revealed that the water plasticizes the PVOH material of the coatings, and the presence of kaolin filler is unable to affect such behavior significantly. The PVOH crystallinity was affected drastically by the humidity, as water melts polymer crystallites, which is a reversible process under removal of water. The permeability data were analyzed using a thermodynamic-based model able to account for the water effect on both the solubility of the gas and the diffusivity coefficients in the polymer and composite. The results showed good agreement between the model’s predictions and the experimental data in terms of the overall permeability of the material. PolyuréthanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Factors that can affect the stability of waterborne polyurethane (WBPU)/clay nanocomposite dispersions are reported. It is suggested that the dispersion stability depends on the carboxyl acid salt content, clay content, sonication (mechanical forces), and clay surface structure. It was observed that the dispersion stability increased with increasing carboxyl acid salt content after applying sonication (mechanical forces) in clay with OH groups (Cloisite 30B) up to 23.58 mol% DMPA. Encapsulated (WBPU20-30B4-M and WBPU23-30B5-M) clay in PU particles was formed using the above combination. The dispersion with clay encapsulated in PU particles had the longest storage time of all of the dispersions. The zeta potential, particle size, particle size distribution, and viscosity of the dispersions also depend on carboxyl acid salt content, clay content, sonication (mechanical forces), and clay surface structure. A facile and low-cost method to fabricate durable amphiphobic coatings is reported in this work. The coatings were composed of top and bottom paints. The top paint was prepared by the F–Si@PMAA hybrid nanocomposites dispersion. The hybrid nanocomposites with dual structure were prepared via the co-condensation reaction of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecyl triethoxysilane (HDFTES) on the surface of the presynthesized PMAA nanoparticles in ethanol dispersion. The bottom one was a type of inexpensive car refinishing paint. The resulting coatings could be sprayed onto different substrates. All the coated substrates exhibited good amphiphobicity with superhydrophobicity with the water contact angle greater than 150°, water roll-off angle less than 4°, and high oleophobicity with the oil contact angle greater than 130°. Moreover, all of the prepared coatings exhibited great robustness after water jetting, sand abrasion, and knife scratching. This method can be an effective strategy for fabricating amphiphobic surfaces for practical industrial applications. The novelty of the experimental formulation arises from the immobilization of the biocide which minimizes leaching and was accomplished via a newly developed functionalization method, based on reaction of the biocide with highly reactive isocyanate functionality. The painting system was applied on steel specimens, then scribed with a sharp cutter and examined for 12 weeks in cyclic salt spray exposure. Identification of the rust morphologies was performed with XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and EDS methods. The absence of paint deformation during the experiment led to the formation of compact corrosion products, firmly adherent to the substrate, allowing transformation to more protective forms, such as oxides (hematite, maghemite, magnetite) and the least harmful of the oxyhydroxides (goethite, feroxyhyte), found in the mixture, ensuring sufficient corrosion protection. The unscratched part of the paint served as a barrier to corrosion product expansion beyond the scribed areas. An acrylic-based antifouling system was also examined for reasons of comparison. The experimental formulation exhibited superior anticorrosion performance overall, since the acrylic system presented extended material loss, blistering, checking, and extensive substrate rust coverage beneath the multilayer coat, implying unsatisfactory corrosion protection. Polyaniline salts were prepared by oxidative polymerization in the solutions of inorganic (hydrochloric, phosphoric, and sulfuric) and organic (p-toluenesulfonic and 5-sulfosalicylic) acids. Polyaniline salts were characterized by thermal analysis and spectroscopic methods. Electrical conductivity was also measured by the van der Pauw method, and the molecular weight of the polyaniline was determined by gel permeation chromatography. Furthermore, the particle size of the solid salts was measured, and the morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Subsequently, the parameters required to formulate pigmented organic coatings, i.e., density and critical pigment volume concentration were determined. A soybean oil-based fast drying alkyd resin of medium oil length was used as the binder for the organic coating material. Organic coatings containing the polyaniline salts at pigment volume concentrations 0%, 1%, 5%, 10%, and 15% were formulated and subjected to a standard accelerated cyclic corrosion tests. The organic coatings (paint films) were also subjected to mechanical tests and to the electrochemical test by potentiodynamic polarization studies. Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The durability of clear coatings is an important problem in the coatings industry. This problem can be partly solved with the addition of UV absorbers (UVAs) in the coating formulation. UVAs can absorb part of the UV radiation and convert it into harmless heat. Organic UVAs are prone to photodegradation and can migrate in the binder of a coating formulation. In this study, commercial UVAs have been encapsulated in poly(methyl methacrylate) microspheres using the internal phase separation method. Microspheres have been incorporated into a clear acrylic binder. The acrylic was then applied on wood panels and was placed into an artificial UV chamber. Efficiency of coatings after aging as well as chemical and physical properties were monitored using a colorimeter, FTIR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. This study presents a comparison between the efficiency of free and encapsulated Tinuvin 1130 and 292 commercial absorbers. Results have shown that the coating efficiency is slightly improved when using the encapsulated products. TiO2 films were deposited on glass using the direct current magnetron sputtering technique, without heating, at different total working pressures. Qualitative analysis using in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the TiO2 stoichiometry of the deposited films. Surface structure was studied as a function of working pressure using scanning electron microscopy. The hydrophilicity of the TiO2 surfaces was investigated macroscopically using measurements of the water contact angle. A threshold working pressure was observed, with a strong dependence on the film thickness. A super hydrophilic surface was observed after less than 1 h of UV irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of the films was evaluated under UV light through the degradation of methylene blue (λmax≈660nm). The effect of UV irradiation on the photocatalytic activity was rapid, strong, and dependent on film thickness and total working pressure. Fifty percent of organic compounds were photodegraded by films with a thickness of 60 nm deposited at 10 mTorr.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An attempt has been made to investigate the effect of phosphating time and vanadium additive on the anticorrosion and surface properties of ambient temperature zinc phosphate coatings. Zinc phosphate coatings with different phosphating times and vanadium concentrations were applied to low carbon steel samples. A potentiostatic polarization test in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was carried out to investigate the electrochemical properties of coated samples. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy were utilized to evaluate the microstructure, chemistry and roughness of coatings. Surface properties such as wettability, surface tension, and work of adhesion were measured. Results indicate that the sample which was immersed for 30 min in the phosphating bath exhibits the lowest corrosion current density, one tenth of bare steel, due to formation of a compact coating while having a low number of microcracks. Addition of 500 ppm vanadium to the coating in a secondary bath decreases the corrosion rate of zinc phosphate coating remarkably, by almost 80%. Microstructural results reveal that vanadium-rich precipitates are formed and enhance the coating coverage on the steel substrate. Vanadium addition increases the surface roughness, surface free energy, and work of adhesion of the phosphate coating.
Plan d'expérienceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The print industry has observed an exponential growth over the last decade. A shift from plastics to paper has been observed in the packaging industry due to its sustainability. The gravure process dominates the packaging industry because of long runs and high print precision. This work focuses on the effect of gravure process parameters on print mottle for 50 GSM (gram/square meters) and 65 GSM (gram/square meters) C1S (coated-one-side) paper. Solid mottle refers to unevenness in print density and occurs due to variations in substrate, ink, and process parameters degrading the print quality, thereby resulting in printed wastage and loss to an organization. The intricate mechanism of ink transfer in the gravure process needs to be studied in depth so as to deliver higher yield and lower print waste. The Stochastic Frequency Distribution Analysis (SFDA) algorithm was used to measure the print mottle. The design of experiments (DOE) was run for gravure process parameters such as line screen, viscosity, press speed, electrostatic assist (ESA) voltage, and air gap (distance between impression roller and charge bar) at varying levels. The experimental data were analyzed through analysis of variance (ANOVA), main plot, and interaction plot. The analysis revealed significance of all process parameters for minimization of solid mottle. The optimized settings showed reduction in solid mottle by 64.68% and 67.78% for 50 GSM and 65 GSM, respectively. A stepwise regression model was developed to predict the print mottle that showed correlation coefficient of 0.912 and 0.938 for 50 GSM and 65 GSM C1S papers. This work could serve as a framework to maintain operating levels of gravure process for minimization of solid mottle.

N–N=(C), C=O, and C–S with high molar refraction groups were introduced into the structure of BMATETDZ. FTIR and 1H NMR were used to characterize the molecular structure of BMATETDZ. The refractive index of BMATETDZ was 1.661. The coatings of poly (2,5-bis(methylallyl thioester)-thiadiazole) (C-PBMATETDZ) on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film were prepared by photopolymerization under UV irradiation. The C-PBMATETDZ coatings exhibited better comprehensive properties with high refractive index, high hardness, good adhesive force, excellent thermal stability, and high transparency in range of 200–900 nm.
