Titre : Adhesion promoters for paints and coatings with a special reference to flexible substrates Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : M. N. Sathyanarayana, Auteur ; M. Yaseen, Auteur Année de publication : 1996 Article en page(s) : p. 23-30 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Adhérence Adjuvant Support Flexibilité Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Organic coatings/paints provide not only corrosion protection but also aesthetic appearance to substrates. The organic coatings to efficiently fulfill the dual functions should possess good film is evident, since the failure of the bond between the coating and the substrate nullifies all other properties combined with adequate adhesion to the substrate. The importance of adhesion is evident since the failure of the bond between the coating and the substrate nullifies all other excellent properties that the coating may have. Generally to improve the adhesion of coatings/paints the appropriate amounts of coupling agents (known as adhesion promoters) are incorporated/added in the coating formulations. In the earlier reviews the findings of adhesion promoters as well as promoters other than silanes have been discussed. The present review discloses the findings on the adhesion promoters used for paints/coatings with a special eference to flexible substrates. The general observations on the performance of these promoters are described in a tabular form at the end of the text. This information may serve as guidelines in the selection of adhesion promoters for specific paint/coating' systems. Note de contenu : - Adhesion promoters for different types of paints/coatings

DMTA is a non-resonant, forced vibration type of device capable of operating over a wide frequency range and which measures the viscoelastic response of materials under a sinusoidally oscillating stress for both supported and unsupported materials. It provides a valuable link between chemistry, morphology and performance properties of materials and its application ranges from the measurement of bulk viscoelastic properties to sophisticated analysis of the kinetics of the crosslinking reaction. The interpretations and application of dynamic data can be utilized to calculate cross-link density (XLD), elastically effective chain length between crosslinks (Mc) and the glass transition temperature of the coating materials. The results and information obtained from DMTA can be correlated with other coating film properties. The present paper describes the utility of DMTA in developing coating materials. The monomer compositions used for copolymerization were calculated from glass transition temperature (Tg) using Fox equation. These copolymers were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, DSC, TGA and the presence of liquid crystalline state in the polymer was confirmed by using polarizing photomicroscope. The potential utility of these liquid crystalline acrylic copolymers for coating applications was assessed by testing various coating properties. Coated films had excellent adhesion, hardness, flexibility and chemical resistance, which are important characteristics for coating applications. Note de contenu : - Synthesis of acrylic copolymer

It was further modified by 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI) in 10–30 wt% of polyetheramide to develop a series of moisture curing urethane-modified polyetheramide resins (UMCOPEtA). The synthesized resin was characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR and solubility in various organic solvents at room temperature. The thermal and curing behavior of the resin was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetric techniques. The physico-chemical properties such as hydroxyl value, iodine value, specific gravity and mechanical properties like scratch hardness, impact, and flexibility were determined by standard laboratory methods. Coatings of UMCOPEtA resin were prepared on mild steel panels to evaluate chemical resistance performance against acid, alkali, water and xylene. The newly developed UMCOPEtA coatings showed improved hardness, impact, gloss, water and chemical resistance when compared with unmodified polyetheramide coatings, and thus were found to be suitable as a high performance coating material.
