Characterisation of the experimental resins in respect of physical properties was carried out using instruments namely vapour pressure osmometer, rotational viscometer, universal tensile testing instrument (Instron 1123) and differential scanning calorimeter. Performance of the resins was evaluated using fluorescent UV accelerated weatherometer and multi-head glossmeter. The results reveal substantial improvement in drying and weather resistance properties of castor oil alkyd on graft copolymerisation with both, methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate. The improvement in these properties is marginally superior in case of MMA grafted alkyds. MMA modification also enhances the mechanical properties of the grafted castor oil alkyd. The body of the paper is concerned with the coating used on a hull of a ship to prevent the accumulation of barnacles and other fouling. The most effective antifouling paint now being used contains toxins and will be forbidden by international regulations within eight years. The ideal replacement will be a nontoxic material that resists the attachment of marine life and encourages the organisms to fall off the ship. This paper describes laboratory and field work during the past 18 years on a variety of fluorinated coatings and silicone coatings with these properties and criteria for formulating successful nontoxic coatings. Silicone and fluorinated coatings frustrate fouling by different mechanisms, and thus the criteria for a successful coating are distinct in important ways. The aim has been to investigate, quantitatively, the transient responses of the paint to changes in seawater temperature, pH, concentration of NaCl, and ship speed. The simulation study revealed that polishing and biocide release rates for a paint present on a ship bottom rarely reach stable conditions, because of the slow response of the paint to changes in temperature and ship speed. It was also found that the paint behavior stabilizes more rapidly from a temperature or speed increase than from temperature or speed reductions. These results are essential for the testing of paints on ships and useful information in the development of novel self-polishing antifouling paints. The modeling approach underlying the simulations can be applied to any type of self-polishing antifouling paint provided that sufficient kinetic, solubility, and diffusivity data are available for the pertinent rate steps influencing the paint behavior.
