Nowadays, the demands of the market, as well as the restrictions due to the ecological considerations, are more and more rigorous. Thus, all of the properties of a given product must comply with such requirements and regulations. Among possible methods for achieving an appropriate level of quality for the product, for example certain clear coats, are those of experimental design and modelling. The quality of a clear coat, measured on the basis of its properties is determined by the composition of raw materials and variables of the production process. These methods enable a simulation of the behaviour of the system, for selected variables, on the basis of the typical points and the proper model. Scratching of clearcoats is a consequence of tribological events encountered by painted exteriors during normal service life. Several subjective methods to assess scratch durability have been proposed. These methods offer little insight into scratch mechanisms. More recently, single scratch methods have been proposed to probe clearcoat scratch mechanisms. This paper outlines a reliable and robust scratch methodology for evaluating scratch durability of automotive clear coatings. It is shown that, with appropriate characterization of tip geometry, quantitative and reproducible critical load values can be obtained. A suggested test method for scratch durability is described. Surface coating properties like water resistance, scratch hardness, impact resistance, flexibility of the developed varnishes were carried out. Besides ammonia based lac varnish, films of all the varnishes failed the water resistance test for 24hrs. Impact resistance was failed while flexibility was passed for all the varnishes. Scratch hardness was recorded to be maximum (1.350 kg) for triethanolamine based vanish while it was inimum (1.250 kg) for varnish based on borax. The gloss was found to be the maximum (75 %) for varnish based on morpholine and minimum (44 %) for borax based varnish.
All the varnishes were further treated with 2 % urea on the weight of shellac to improve the water resistance property. Films of all the varnishes passed the water resistance test except borax varnish.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6936
