Scratching of clearcoats is a consequence of tribological events encountered by painted exteriors during normal service life. Several subjective methods to assess scratch durability have been proposed. These methods offer little insight into scratch mechanisms. More recently, single scratch methods have been proposed to probe clearcoat scratch mechanisms. This paper outlines a reliable and robust scratch methodology for evaluating scratch durability of automotive clear coatings. It is shown that, with appropriate characterization of tip geometry, quantitative and reproducible critical load values can be obtained. A suggested test method for scratch durability is described. The term mar is used to describe the surface damage of coatings, which may not be readily noticeable individually, however, the existence of many mars does degrade the appearance of coatings. Good mar resistance is a requirement for many coatings applications. With the unique high resolution of the SPM, the dimension of the mars can be measured with great accuracy, thus different responses of coatings to the marring stress, i.e., elastic recovery, plastic deformation, and abrasive wear, can be identified quantitatively. In addition, the dynamic process of marring, including viscoelastic creep, strain-hardening, micro-cracking, and surface fatigue, has also been studied with the SPM. This is especially true with solvents used in coating compositions. Therefore, in order to more accurately determine threshold concentrations, a series of experiments were run using the Devlin olfactometer. Nineteen solvents were evaluated. Solvents were rated using Steven's Law parameters K, which gives an indication of odor magnitude potential, and n, which characterizes the effects of dilution. In addition, equations were established from which the minimum solvent concentration for human odor detection could be calculated. Although they continue to be useful for many applications, the size of the samples has to be restricted to be no less than a few millimeters. In this paper we report on using an imaging ellipsometer to study the characteristics of an SiO2 coating on aluminum microflakes. This novel approach overcomes the lateral resolution limit of conventional ellipsometers, providing access to samples with very small dimensions. A comparison was also made between the coating thickness obtained from imaging ellipsometry and electron microscopy. The macromers were styrenated at 100°C using benzoil peroxide as an initiator. The styrenation led to improved film properties with semidrying oils. Homopolymerization of the macromoomers failed due to the stearic hindrance of the bulky oil moieties. The results obtained were also evaluated by considering the degree of unsaturation.
