Protection contre le rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of various nano-particle types and sizes on color, wettability, and surface chemistry of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) sapwood samples were investigated over 6 weeks of outdoor exposure. Specimens were treated with 0.2% wt/wt water dispersions of zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), silica dioxide (SiO2), cerium dioxide (CeO2), and iron oxide (Fe2O3), and four nano-sizes of Fe2O3. Color changes during exposure were characterized by measuring CIE L*a*b* color parameters, surface wettability changes were assessed using water droplet contact angle, and chemical changes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Nano-particles protected wood from photo-discoloration to differing degrees with iron oxide providing the most effective and consistent protection. Smaller alpha Fe2O3 nano-particles provided better UV protection. Nano-particles did not reduce wettability of wood after UV exposure nor were they able to completely prevent lignin degradation. Zinc oxide nano-particles provided some cellulose and hemicellulose protection during UV exposure. Iron oxide nano-particles exhibited some potential for limiting degradation, but the differences were small and not significant from untreated controls. The results suggest that combinations of zinc and iron oxide might be useful for UV protection, and further trials are planned with these mixtures. Revêtements antisalissuresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Herein, a series of antifouling coatings (CTNCs) composed of acrylic boron silicon polymer (ABSP) and environmental-friendly photocatalysts C3N4-TiO2(B) heterojunctions were successfully prepared. Large-scale production and low-cost photocatalyst C3N4-TiO2(B) can be perfectly compounded with ABSP, realizing the possibility of engineering application. SEM and AFM analysis showed that the C3N4-TiO2(B) particles were firmly embedded in the coating, but serious agglomeration appeared when the content of the photocatalyst exceeds 7 wt%. The hydrophilic nanoparticles can accelerate the hydrolysis and adjust the self-polishing rates of the polymer matrix to repel bacteria and algae. When the content of C3N4-TiO2(B) was in the range of 5–7 wt%, the CTNCs displayed better resistance to Nitzschia closterium, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli than the coating containing pure C3N4, and the anti-bacterial rates towards S. aureus and E. coli can reach 99.72% and 98.96%. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Reducing the repainting frequency of exterior coatings is a wish for most building owners, therefore, there is a continuous effort to develop longer lasting paints. A new family of pure acrylic binders has been designed to associate on to mineral particles present in a peint formulation, in particular Ti02 but also extenders, to space them optimally and offer a homogeneous peint film with superior exterior durability. Naturel exposure data in different climatic conditions confirm the benefits of this new binder technology, showing superior cheik resistance, gloss and colour retention and efflorescence resistance. The adsorption of these newly designed acrylic binders on to Ti02 pigment results, as well in a boost in hiding, which allows the paint formulator to reduce the pigment level and improve the sustainability profile of the paints. C’est un métal pauvre, malléable, de couleur argent, qui est remarquable pour sa résistance à l’oxydation13 et sa faible densité. C'est le métal le plus abondant de l'écorce terrestre et le troisième élément le plus abondant après l'oxygène et le silicium ; il représente en moyenne 8 % de la masse des matériaux de la surface solide de notre planète. L'aluminium est trop réactif pour exister à l'état natif dans le milieu naturel : on le trouve au contraire sous forme combinée dans plus de 270 minéraux différents, son minerai principal étant la bauxite, où il est présent sous forme d’oxyde hydraté dont on extrait l’alumine. Il peut aussi être extrait de la néphéline, de la leucite, de la sillimanite, de l'andalousite et de la muscovite.
L'aluminium métallique est très oxydable, mais est immédiatement passivé par une fine couche d'alumine Al2O3 imperméable de quelques micromètres d'épaisseur qui protège la masse métallique de la corrosion. On parle de protection cinétique, par opposition à une protection thermodynamique, car l’aluminium reste en tout état de cause très sensible à l'oxydation. Cette résistance à la corrosion et sa remarquable légèreté en ont fait un matériau très utilisé industriellement.
L'aluminium est un produit industriel important, sous forme pure ou alliée, notamment dans l'aéronautique, les transports et la construction. Sa nature réactive en fait également un catalyseur et un additif dans l'industrie chimique ; il est ainsi utilisé pour accroître la puissance explosive du nitrate d'ammonium.

Special attention was paid to the order of addition of poly(acrylic acid) and ethyl(hydroxyethyl) cellulose, because this has an effect on the adsorption of the polymers onto the TiO2 pigment. The order of addition also affects the rheological properties of the mill base dispersion and the gloss of the paint. The gloss was also affected by the surfactant used to stabilize the latex.
