In this study, we examined how crosslinking reactions of hexamethylene diisocyanate isocyanurate and polyacrylate near the film-air (F-A) and film-substrate (F-S) interfaces in urethane coatings may affect crosslink density as well as other network properties. While at the initial stages of the crosslinking reactions, solvent evaporation competes with the urethane network formation and isocyanate consumption changes at various depths from the F-A and F-S interfaces. Quantitative analysis of the NCO consumption as a function of depth showed that the NCO concentrations change from 2.35 x 10-5 to 2.09 x 10-5 M, while going from 0.27 to 1.14 μm. During reaction times not exceeding two to three hours, the NCO consumption at the F-A and F-S interfaces is consumed more rapidly. At low relative humidity conditions, excessive amounts of unreacted NCO exists at both the F-A and F-S interfaces. However, at the extended reaction times, NCO concentration levels at the F-S are greater than at the F-A interface, and the NCO concentration differences can be as high as 3 x 10-5 M. In this study we also examined how crosslinking reactions of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) isocyanurate and polyacrylate near the F-S interfaces in urethane films may affect orientation and distribution of urethane functionalities. Concentration levels of unreacted isocyanate (NCO) are greater at the film-air (F-A) interface than the film-substrate (F-S) interface. In contrast to the previous studies on polyacrylate emulsion urethanes, no stratification was detected between 0.65 to 1.14 um near the F-A and F-S interfaces. This behavior is attributed to equivalent weight differences, 3100 g/eg for polyacrylate and 1140 g/eq for polyester. Solvent evaporation experiments show that approximately 10% of the initial water concentration remains in the film for extended periods of time, resulting in reactions leading to the fomation of urea near the F-S interface.Pur film formation occurs in two stages, a solvent vapor pressure controlled stage, followed by a diffusion controlled stage. The duration of each stage depends on several factors, including the amount of shear induced on the shear thinning waterborne urethanes, which subsequently affects the exposure of isocyanate aggregates to water. Increased RH significantly affects structure-property relationships of waterborne PURs due to urea formation, which alters the glass transition temperature, storage modulus, crosslink density, and film hardness.
Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Shear and elongation rheology have been used in order to quantify the interfacial tension properties of PLA_PBAT blends. A multi-functional epoxide (Joncryl) has been chosen as a compatibilizer. From small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS), the results show that the addition of the Joncryl into the blends increased largely the shear rheological properties (elasticity, shear-thinning behavior) and contributed to very long relaxation process. This relaxation process is characterized by the presence of a G′ shoulder at lower angular frequencies. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) observations show a finer morphology thus confirming the improvement of interfacial properties of the compatibilized blends. The interfacial tension has been firstly quantified using the deformed drop retraction method (DDRM). These experiments elucidated some of the effects of phase elasticity on both deformation mechanism and break-up conditions. A decrease of the interfacial tension has been demonstrated for the compatibilized blends. Secondly, the same trend was also highlighted using the emulsion Palierne model (simplified and generalized versions). Finally, the interfacial tension value was extracted from the measurements of extensional properties. A good accuracy with the two latter methods was obtained. This decrease of the interfacial tension nicely demonstrated the role of Joncryl as an efficient compatibilizer for a better handling of blow PLA-PBAT film extrusion process.

IGC measurements over a significant temperature range provided surface energy and acid-base interaction parameters for these materials. Two sets of IGC data were obtained: (1) the quantity of vapor used to probe solid surfaces was extremely small, with results describing the properties of the most energetic surface sites; and (2) finite concentrations of vapor probes were used, with results describing the average properties of surface sites. A comparison of the two sets gave information on the heterogeneity of sites on the polymer and pigment surfaces. Heterogeneity parameters were defined for sites interacting through dispersion forces as well as for those able to interact as acids and bases. The present work reinforces the usefulness of surface characterizations by IGC by showing that the stability of pigments dispersed in the polymer vehicles was a function of the acid-base interaction between polymer-pigment pairs.
