ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Currently, anticorrosive coatings find a large number of applications and can be effectively used for corrosion protection of many corrosion-prone metals like aluminum, iron, etc. Nanocontainers have the ability to encapsulate large amounts of guest molecules within their core, and releasing them in a controlled way can aid in providing self-healing abilities to the coating, thus providing active protection. In the present study, a novel approach of synthesis of nanocontainers using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and corrosion inhibitor 2-mercaptobenzothiazole has been discussed with their applications in corrosion protection of mild steel (MS). It is a three-step procedure involving layer-by-layer deposition of the CNT, inhibitor, and polyelectrolytes, which thus provides enhanced corrosion protection when coated on MS plates. The thickness of the layer, surface charge, and functional groups present on each layer were identified using various analytic techniques such as particle size distribution, zeta potential, and FTIR analysis. X-ray diffractograms analyses of CNT and modified CNT were performed to evaluate their crystallographic properties. The morphological and particle size clearly indicate the development of a nanocontainer. The corrosion rate analysis of nanocontainer-epoxy coatings on MS panel has been performed by means of salt spray and DC polarization measurements. The corrosion resistance was measured after the immersion of the coated samples in alkali solution. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : According to the international surface preparation standard for welds (ISO 8501-3, "Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products - Visual assessment of surface cleanliness - Part 3 : Preparation grades of welds, edges and other areas with surface imperfections"), the preparation grades before paint application are divided into three levels: P1, P2 and P3 (Fig.a). These grades are described with rough qualitative representations instead of with descriptions of surface treatment methods or mesurable conditions. Because of the ambiguous wording in the standard, there have been a lot of argument about surface preparation grades and abraded condition during construction.
In this study, coating thickness, the corrosion resistance and crack tendency of the coated films on the welds were evaluated for the grinding range in five levels from mild to servere. Each ground specimen was blasted to Sa 2.5 and coated with two coats of epoxy paints. The performance of coating on welds with the grades of grinding condition were not significantly different, satisfying the criteria of ISO 12944-5, "Paints and varnishes - Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems - Part 5 : Protective paint systems" (C5-M medium). After blasting, all ground specimens showed smooth surfaces that did not result in a sharp edge or excessive film thickness.Note de contenu : - Visual inspection of surface treatment on the welding line

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Currently, galvanized steel is treated with hexavalent chrome passivation. Sol–gel coating has been found to be a potential replacement for the hazardous hexavalent chrome passivation treatment. The aim of this work is to study the effect of zirconyl nitrate on corrosion behavior of sol–gel coating. Aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane were employed as precursors to prepare the sol–gel-based silane coating. The sol–gel film was deposited on galvanized steel sheet by dip coating method. The chemical properties of sol–gel solution and coated films were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. Morphology of the film was characterized by scanning electron microscope. The corrosion resistance of the coated samples was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization curve, and salt spray test. The results indicated that zirconia-doped coatings have better corrosion resistance in comparison with their undoped counterparts. The coating doped with 0.5% zirconyl nitrate provides better corrosion protection due to the inhibitive action of zirconia ion.
