shampooingsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : Cationic guar is an important polysaccharide used as a hair conditioning agent in personal care products. In this article, we report streaming potential data demonstrating its behaviour as it interacts electrostatically with hair. Several cationic guar variants with different molecular weights (MWs) and charge densities (CDs) were examined.
- Methods : All experiments were carried out with a custom-designed streaming potential instrument so that in situ, real-time data were monitored during the treatment of a hair plug with aqueous solutions of cationic guar and subsequent treatment with anionic surfactants—sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB)—commonly found in contemporary shampoo formulations.
- Results : The MW of the cationic guar variants plays an integral role in determining the thickness of the adsorbed polymer layer on the hair surface while CD influences the zeta potential. Data were also generated for the treatment of hair with a cationic flexible polymer (polyquaternium-28) and cationic conditioning surfactant (behentrimonium chloride) to provide a frame of reference. The deposition behaviour on hair of high MW cationic guar variants is distinct from these conventional molecules in terms of its electrokinetic properties. We also examined the electrokinetic behaviour of cationic guar on hair types from different racial backgrounds. While the cationic guar treatment yielded similar results for the different hair types, anionic surfactant treatment resulted in quicker sorption and desorption from African, European 65% grey, and Mulatto hair as compared to Chinese, European dark brown, and Indian hair.
- Conclusion : We introduce an in situ technique for measuring the dynamic sorption/desorption of charged molecules on the surface of human hair. Evaluation of a series of cationic guar species revealed varying behaviour depending on the MW and CD of the polysaccharide. Our data also demonstrate differences in the desorption properties of typical shampoo surfactants for hair from diverse racial backgrounds.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Hair samples - Cationic guar variants - Electrokinetic permeability analysis - Mechanical measurements of combing force

Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : To improve the weather ability and thermal stability of styrene-acrylic polymer emulsion coatings, a series of novel styrene-acrylic polymer emulsion modified with 2-[2-hydroxy-5-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]phenyl]-2H-benzotriazole (HMEB), hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA), and vinyl-trimethoxysilane (VTMS) were prepared through semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization. The emulsions and their coatings were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, dynamic laser scattering, transmission electron microscopy, zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis, and artificially accelerated aging test. According to the results, the new polymer emulsion had superior UV absorption from 308 to 364 nm. Moreover, the coating performed the best anti-aging stability when the content of HMEB, HFMA, and VTMS reached 4%, 2%, and 3%, respectively. After the 1000 h aging test, the color difference (ΔE) and rate of loss of gloss (ΔG) were only 6.86% and 51.10%, while the unmodified coatings were 16.05% and 72.22%, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal stability and water resistance of the coating were improved by fluorine and silicon monomers. The initial decomposition temperature was increased from 327 to 339°C. Moreover, the UV stabilization mechanism is preliminarily discussed. Titre : A novel approach for lightfast wet-white leather manufacture based on sulfone syntan-aluminum tanning agent combination tannage Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Zhang Long, Auteur ; Xinyu Zhao, Auteur ; Chunhua Wang, Auteur ; Wei Lin, Auteur Année de publication : 2018 Article en page(s) : p. 192-197 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Tannage Résumé : Wet-white tanning as an eco-friendly leather-making process has been attracting considerable attention. Herein, we have investigated a novel combination tannage for lightfast wet-white leather based on sulfone syntan and aluminium tanning agent. By optimizing the technology, 10% sulfone syntan and 3% aluminum tanning agent at final pH 4.0 - 4.5 can raise the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of the wet-white leather to ~81°C. The synergistic tanning mechanism of the two has been illustrated. As verified by Zeta potential measurements, the introduction of Al3+ into the sulfone syntan system led to the increase in the isoelectric point (IEP) of wet-white leather, which is favorable for the subsequent post-tanning process. Scanning electron microscope-Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) results reveal that sulfone syntan and aluminum tanning agent can be evenly bound within the leather matrix and promote the formation of tightly woven networks of collagen fibers. The novel combination tanning approach not only improves light fastness and lighter shade, but also confers high physical and mechanical properties to the wet-white leather.
