Preparation of encapsulated aluminium pigments by emulsion polymerization and their characterization / Th. Batzilla in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY (JCT), Vol. 70, N° 881 (06/1998)
[article]
Titre : Preparation of encapsulated aluminium pigments by emulsion polymerization and their characterization Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Th.

A possible application target is the improvement of the performance of aluminium pigment in waterborne coatings. The effect of the treatment on the stability of the aluminium pigments in the presence of alkaline water was examined. Analytical investigations with SEM, TEM, STEM-EDX, XPS, and TOC were performed and revealed a kind of coagulation mechanism of polymer particles on the pigment surface.
Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Here, waterborne coatings with enhanced physico-mechanical properties were prepared by incorporation of modified silica nanoparticles into an acrylic matrix through miniemulsion polymerization. In order to circumvent the inherent incompatibility of organic and inorganic portions, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate molecules were chemically coupled to the surface of silica nanoparticles to alter the hydrophilic nature of inorganic nanoparticles to hydrophobic ones. Also, for investigating the effect of the exploited surface modification process, unmodified silica nanoparticles were used in preparing acrylic latex via miniemulsion polymerization. The optical and physico-mechanical properties of the acrylic–silica nanocomposite films with 0–10 wt% of unmodified and modified SiO2 were characterized by measuring their surface roughness, haziness, gloss values, UV–Vis transmittance, scratch resistance, tensile, and pendulum hardness. It was found that by using modified SiO2 nanoparticles, due to their better dispersion state and ability for establishing covalent linkage with acrylic polymer chains, it is possible to obtain nanocomposite coatings with improved physico-mechanical properties, high transparency in Vis region, considerable UV adsorption, and comparable surface roughness, glossiness, and haziness with pure acrylic film. However, unmodified silica nanoparticles formed many aggregates in the polymer matrix which deteriorated optical and different physico-mechanical properties of acrylic latex. It was found that the greatest improvement in properties is achieved by incorporation of 7 wt% modified silica nanoparticles in acrylic polymer.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Free radical polymerization is one of the most widely employed polymerization techniques. Some advantages of radical polymerizations, with respect to other techniques, are the relative insensitivity to impurities, the moderate reaction temperatures and the multiple polymerization processes available, e.g., bulk, solution, precipitation or emulsion polymerization. Some disadvantages related to the mechanism of free radical polymerization is the poor control of the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution, and the difficulty (or even impossibility) of preparing well-defined copolymers or polymers with a predetermined functionality. To overcome these disadvantages new techniques were developed based on either reversible deactivation of polymer radicals or a degenerative transfer
process, called 'living' or controlled radical polymerizations (CRP) lt will be worthwhile to discuss the significance
of the living radical polymerization process because of which it was selected for the present investigation. ControIled radical polymerizations, like atour transfer radical polymerizations, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and Nitroxide-Mediated Polymerizations (NMP) represent key strategies for the preparation of polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions. This short, introductory review covers the still rapidly growing emulsion polymerization technique. The review is focused on atom transfer radical polymerizations & reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization techniques.Note de contenu : - EMULSION POLYMERIZATION : Classification of polymerization
